Hooray! Always good when this thread comes along.

Check out The Inner Ring preview here: http://inrng.com/2016/06/tour-de-france-guide-2016/

The team's are slowly coming in too: http://www.procyclingstats.com/race/Tour_de_France_2016_Startlist

Froome starts as favourite with Quintana and Contador the most obvious challengers. Aru, Pinot, Porte, Bardet and Van Garderen will fancy the podium. And what might Adam Yates be able to do?

Problem is if you take (at least) three big hitters out of the all-rounders and climbers and also an expensive sprinter, you have to start looking at the 6/4 pointers for a little bit of value for money for 2 or 3 riders!

It's a difficult matter! I've found a couple of low pointers, but even then, it's getting really difficult.

Having to try and balance it, while trying to find one or two who might go off in a breakaway 4-5 times and pick up a few points that way.

I've relied heavily on Froomey in previous years, and his finale to the Criterium showed excellent form. Tough to sacrifice over a quarter of the points though!

If you take four 4 pointers, your sprinter will be at least 8, and you take an 8 pointer climber, then you can afford Froome, Quintana and Contador.

I am sure in the past few years it has not quite been that extreme.

Last year, I was able to take Froome, Sagan, Greipel and I think either Rodriguez or Pinot, that would be near impossible this year!

That's what I've done, gone for some big names and 3 x 4 pointers. Probably going to crash and burn but what the hell.

Just thrown mine in there. After a successful Giro campaign feel that normal service is about to resume. That was tough work. Once you pick Froome you are really against it on points.

It seems impossible to have Froome and Sagan in the same team which is a shame but should make for more variable teams.

Perusing the route again, I hadn't realised how many likely bunch sprint stages there are this year.

Makes taking a 2nd sprinter as the wild card an attractive option but 2 sprinters likely to contest and 1 of the top 3 riders (especially if you have taken Sagan) makes like pretty impossible too.

Captain Pizza

I've got two sprinters in at the moment, but I am worried that I'll have picked ones who aren't going to bother hanging on until Paris. Other than sagan, which sprinters will stay the full three weeks?

Funny old classifications.

That's reasonable. Quintana is a climber. In a TT who would back him over Froome for example? This years parcours makes it a very close battle between those 2 because of the profile of the TTs.

Yeah i think in recent years i have been down to 5 or 6 riders after the first week or two.

I always think that the end of tour points are a big swing. Tomorrows stage will shake up the Yellow early on so will be a big guess who will hold it through this first week. Unlikely to be a pure sprinter. Sagan? Possibly.

Another shake up on Wednesday too.

Genuinely my favourite British sports person in my life. Some of friends were in Paris the year Wiggins won the tour and lead Cav out on the Champs Elysees and described it as a moment they'd never forget. I remember not really getting over my sadness of him not winning the Olympic Road Race for the rest of the Games or taking yellow in Harrogate.

I would think/hope so. Plenty of other "puncheurs" interested in the stage victory: Valverde, Rodriguez, Dan Martin, Alaphilippe, Zakarin, Costa. Coquard also says he's up for this.

You're right. He should have been on my list. According to recent interviews over here he fancies taking the maillot jaune today.
They're saying the climb is not hard enough for the climbers but too hard for the sprinters. It'll be very interesting to see what happens.

Took the opposite gamble and went without a top sprinter. Coquard is in but thats it.

Conversely i have Froome, Quintana, Bardet and Yates sitting on 14s and Patano within a minute.

Tomorrow is pan flat so i will lose more ground but Wednesday and Friday should shake up the GC.

Gutted for Coquard (and my velogames) he was motoring at teh end and if the line was a few inches further away or he has started his charge a split second earlier he would have made it.

Will be an interesting day today. Will the pace over the Cat 2's be sedate enough to allow the sprinters, including Sagan, to stay on or will the climbers stretch their legs and distance them? Will be interesting to see if any fast men try and make the break, and if they are allowed to, with the hope of getting over Col du Perthus in contention?

Doubt a photo will be needed today though.

Looking through the list, it's noticeable that none of the unclassified riders are really scoring points, either in the sprints or in the mountains. There's normally a gem or two in this category, but not this time it would appear.

I have Kreuziger in 18th who was unclassifed (although an 8 point pick).

I also have Contador so could do with him either losing a heap of time to allow Kreuziger to have a free run or finding his form very quickly.

Yes!
Firstly, hat to Van Avermaet for the stage victory and the maillot jaune. Well deserved. As an aside, I couldn't really understand why he was classed as a sprinter in Velogames.
Secondly that Thomas de Gendt is a real enigma. I would have put my shirt on him winning the stage when those three broke away, and then all of a sudden he had nothing left in the tank when Van Avermaet attacked.
Thirdly why did the good climbers in that break let those three get away? Did they think they would pull them back in the final Cat 2 climb. Majka disappointed me immensely.
Thirdly Movistar certainly upped the pace and you were expecting an attack from Quintana at one point, but then nothing happened. It certainly contributed to Contador losing time at the end of the stage. I can't see Beefy finishing TBH. He looks to have something seriously wrong with his shoulder/collarbone.
Admittedly there were still 20 riders in the group at the end, but it's very rare to have so few riders in contention for the overall GC even before they've hit the big mountains.

I still hope (not only for Velogames) that Froome falls off his bike 'cos it would make the Tour more open as opposed to seeing the Sky train at the front of the leading group every day in the mountains!
I also hope Valverde rides to help Quintana trouble Froome rather than ride to finish 4th or 5th, which IMO would be a shame from a strategic and tactical point of view.

It's the last chance for the sprinters for a while today. There'll be a breakaway but I doubt they'll be given more than 5 minutes. Greipel? Coquard? Cav? Kittel? Sagan? It's going to be very hot today down there (+35°)!

Surely Cav, Greipel or Kittel with the fact it is so flat in the finale? This year no-one is really dominating the sprints so it should be any of those 3 but a few others capable of upsetting the apple-cart.

Apparently 1949 was the last time someone had a 5 minute lead at this stage in the TdF and back then it was close to 15 minutes.

GVA suggests he will not only keep it today but might keep it tomorrow  Cannot see him getting up the Col D'Aspin with 5 minutes of the GC who will be battling no doubt up the first major climb of the tour.

I have Kreuziger in 18th who was unclassifed (although an 8 point pick).

I also have Contador so could do with him either losing a heap of time to allow Kreuziger to have a free run or finding his form very quickly.

Most of my team are showing some kind of potential except Beefy and the low point picks:
Alberto Contador 20
Julian Alaphilippe 10
Romain Bardet 14
Pierre Rolland 10
Peter Sagan 20
Roman Kreuziger 8
Stef Clement 4
Alexis Vuillermoz 6
Dylan Groenewegen 8

I missed Kreuiger as an unclassified, i think he is usually in the top 2 categories.

Will be interesting to see what Tinkoff do, lots of reports today that Roman was told to wait for Bertie and didn't etc. Contador has a day to rest today but if he is not on it tomorrow they will blow him away on the Col D'Aspin. If Kreuziger waits for him then Tinkoff will only have Sagan to work for so you will surely get your answer tomorrow.

I thought Cav looked impressive on the uphill finish a couple of days back, where he got boxed in but still looked to be gaining on everyone, even with the gradient, once he got free. I wonder if his track work has improved his power over shorter distances, therefore helping him out in the early sprints?

I stay in Croydon once a week and normally go for a ride after work. Looking for some alternative 25-35 mile routes. I've probably only got 90 minutes tonight so need something under 30 miles.

The one I ride most regularly is up to West Wickham, up Layhams Road and then a loop that starts by going down Beddlestead Lane. Any other suggestions for good loops out of Croydon?

I think a bit of both too. But this quote from Kittel also tells a story:

"To be very honest, in the finals this year, there is no tactic. It's impossible to ride with a team here. I don't know why the organisers do it like this with downhills in the city, we have all those small roads and corners. It goes wide, narrow, wide again and every team is struggling at this stage to be at the front," Kittel said. "The GC teams are also holding their wheels until the finish line. It's pure chaos and that's why you can win here with really smart positioning. The team only has to bring you forward at a certain moment and that's it and then you have to go out of the wheel of someone at a certain point."

Cav is the smartest sprinter in the bunch, and the fact that he hasn't really got a lead out train on his team is probably a positive rather than a negative at the moment.

Today's stage is a little bit lumpy in the middle and basically one hard climb with a descent at the end! I know Sky normally hit hard on the first mountainous stage, but they'll probably wait until tomorrow with a lot of different climbs. The descent plus possible storms at the end of the afternoon might make this more interesting!

Chicken or Egg or coincidence?

So the sprint teams have been moaning tha the GC teams have been riding at the front on sprint stages in the past week.

Today we have a mountain stage and with Sagan and Cav up the road the sprint teams have put a fierce pace on at the front to prevent a break with the Col d'Aspin for everyone to get up in a couple of hours time.

Pace today is much higher then it has been for many flatter stages.

Was clever.

Going for 'the points' over the previous climb he duped the favourites into thinking he went for the points over the final climb. By the time they realised he was not sitting up and was going for it he was gone and they took time to organise. Brave and bold considering it is only stage 8.

Hopefully i can start picking up some points and start clawing my way back into the pack on velogames. 1,4,7,11 on the stage and 1,2,6,9 on GC.

Great tactics from Froome. As Gonzo says, he sold them all a dummy on the penultimate climb and then kept going after the last. And Cav managed to get back to the group having been 4 minutes down (apparently) with only one helper. Great days racing.

So we have had 3 different Brits winning 5 of 8 stages, we're 1st and 2nd in the GC and hold 3 of the 4 jerseys - you can read all about cycling on the BBC sport page under "other sport".

Watching yesterday's stage now. This descending from Froome is unreal. And makes me feel incredibly nervous watching it. 90km/hr!!

Sagan has apparently hit 97km/h on today's first descent! Scary speeds.
