I watched for less than a minute, teachers and public servants striking due to not being paid for months and their government spends over 40billion on this utter shambolic sporting spectacle, the world is clearly barmy.

Hang on, when did it start?
I just switched on and it hasn't started yet (on NBC anyway)

I remember trying to watch it when in Salt Lake City four years ago. You have a delay over there.

Ended up watching it online. As I am now in Ibiza.

Started midnight UK time (43 minutes ago). Is being shown live on BBC here

It's not that bad really. None of them will seem good compared to London as they celebrate a country's history and culture and we don't know much about anywhere other than GB. But it is more entertaining for me than the drummers at Beijing that went on forever.

Joke of an Olympic Games. A country and city so poverty stricken and they can host the World Cup and olympics in the space of 2 years at the cost of 60 billion. Absolute disgrace!!!!

Bloody NBC... obviously not showing it live then. They're still doing studio interviews etc. Guess it may start at 8pm (15mins time)/
No spoilers please :D

Thing is, when they were bidding for the WC and the Olympics, Brazil was riding the crest of an oil boom. Who would have thought the price of oil would plummet back then? Obviously they didn't.
Not that the oil boom was a justifiable reason for staging both events but it was, at the time, a projected huge revenue stream that could afford it.

Please welcome the athletes ........

And the steroid abusers from Russia (and elsewhere)

Enjoyed it so far but didn't feel the climate change section was necessary.

Now it's just watching the athletes walk through for the next two hours.

25mins in and I'm giving up. It's just an adverts fest on NBC.

Got to admire them for putting a message across - I thought the first part of that with the maps of coastal cities was good - and effective.

It's an important message but the wrong place for it I think.

You don't host a party then sit everyone down to talk about global warming!

Was Brighton on there? Plenty of Brazilians on parade down that way.

NBC are showing it as live but with an hour's delay. My mate was here 4 years ago & said the American coverage was shocking. No-one's even talking about the Olympics at work. I'm all over the BBC coverage for the next 3 weeks.

Especially in a country that destroys miles upon miles of rainforest every day and has terrible pollution everywhere.

Complete boll***s. Has no place in an Olympic Ceremony even it was true. Just the usual propaganda from the establishment.

And 8:00pm here!

Is it me or is Bob Costas sounding more and more like Howard Cosell?

I think he is becoming a parody of himself... they only seem to role him out for the Olympic games these days. Good gig if you can get it!

Oh God here we go... 45 minutes to go here, and already 2 tear jerking cancer survivors!

Talk about catering to the lowest denominator/minority. This reminds me why I can't watch sports on network TV anymore.

It is true. And could be one of the biggest threats facing humanity in the future. Whilst highlighting it here may not do much, the more mainstream concern about the climate becomes the better. Only then will effective changes be made.

Olympic ceremonies are there to showcase history but also can be used to spread messages.

The climate change poem thing did bring the mood down a bit.

They could've cut down on the old guys singing and brought out the carnival dancers earlier, but I thought it was pretty good. The cauldron-mirror thing looks cool.

It's always the official traditions that slow the whole thing down really.

So far (30 minutes in) a lot of projection technology, and not a lot of substance. OK so the TV has the best view and the commentary, but what about the poor people there?

Once the Wimbledon games transition over to the 'major' network(s) from ESPN, they do exactly the same thing. All about the advertising

Yeah, people want to have fun, not be preached at - but I thought they did it pretty well. The tree saplings held by a child at the head of each group of athletes tied in to it. I didn't think it spoiled the fun because it was short and quite effective. If climate change had completely taken over the show, it would have been wrong, but it didn't.

Why will the games be dreadful. I watched up until the parade of countries. Likes the bit about the history of the settlers, the rest was a bit crap.

What a bizarre opening ceremony. So ransom and disjointed. What was the point of Gisele walking the whole length of the stadium? And those random guys sliding down a ramp on skateboard things, never to be seen again?

I can sum the opening ceremony in a few words, a woman goes for a long walk in the stadium and plenty of flashing lights......Beat that......
