On this day - 4th November 1972

Love bringing this one up.

44 years ago today.

Very special memories for me.

"Don Rogers makes his debut for Crystal Palace after signing from Swindon Town and scores in the 1-0 defeat of Everton".

A 12 year old, I was playing football in goal against Ampney Crucis ..... faithful wireless by my side for updates.

We cycled the 8 mile round trip.

Would kids do that these days?

Before I was born, but the sobering thought was that that was our 4th consecutive top flight season, and we arguably had our best squad and still went down.

I was at Highbury in 93, again 4th season, again unlucky to go down.

4th season this year and although we moan and groan, if we scrape by (as I expect) thia well be the best run in our history!

We spent an awful lot of money that season, in a desperate effort to stay up.

Iain Phillip ... Charlie Cooke ... Alan Whittle ... all brought in for ridiculously inflated transfer fee's.

Word was ... we had a bit of cash to spend so the prices went up.

147,000 was a lot of money back in 1972.

If we beat Man Utd 5-0 the writings on the wall.😢

There was the rumour that we were going to bid 250k on someone.

Crazy amounts at the time, I still baulk at the thought of us spending circa 30 million on a player!

Good punch up between Whittle and Blyth. 6 weeks later Whittle is a Palace player and scoring as we thrashed Man U.

I'll say that again " ...as we thrashed Man U.:lux::lux:
