From the BBC:

Manor Racing have gone into administration and will collapse without new investment.

Staff were informed of the development on Friday by chief executive officer Thomas Mayer, a source told BBC Sport. Administrators FRP said there was "a very limited window of opportunity" to save the team before the start of the 2017 season in Australia on 26 March. FRP said it was "assessing options" and that the process affected Manor's operating company Just Racing Services. Manor Grand Prix Racing, which owns the rights to the team's participation in F1, is not in administration.
Team owner Stephen Fitzpatrick said in a note to staff: "It was imperative that the team finish in 10th place or better in 2016." Manor, who finished 11th and last in the championship last season, have been in talks with new investors but so far no deal has been concluded.
Administrator Geoff Rowley said: "The team has made significant progress since the start of 2015, but the position remains that operating a F1 team requires significant ongoing investment. The senior management team has worked tirelessly to bring new investment, but regrettably has been unable to do so within the time available. Therefore, they have been left with no alternative but to place [Manor Racing] into administration."

A source said several buyers had been lined up over the past few weeks and two had gone as far as conducting a due diligence process. But none of them provided the funds necessary to buy the team, nor was there any proof they had the money to run it.
Fitzpatrick, the boss of the energy company Ovo, decided to put the team into administration on Thursday night.

From the BBC quoting ITV News:

The future of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone could be under threat because of the "potentially ruinous risk" of staging the loss-making race. Circuit owner the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) is considering giving notice to exercise a contract-break clause at the end of 2019.

A letter written by BRDC chairman John Grant - seen by ITV News - says a decision will be made by "mid-year". The BRDC's contract with Formula 1 runs until 2026. Silverstone first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1950 and has been the event's permanent home since 1987. Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone told ITV News: "If they want to activate a break clause, there is nothing we can do. Two other tracks have contacted us and we are keen to keep a British Grand Prix, there is no doubt about it, we want to have one."

Three-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart added: "I think it's a credible threat, not impossible for it to happen. I would be very sad if it did. There's no other race track that would be able to host the British Grand Prix."

From the BBC:

Frederic Vasseur has left his position as boss of Renault's Formula 1 team after a single season. A Renault statement said the decision to part company was "agreed by mutual consent" and was effective immediately. The moves comes after months of claims by sources of a difficult relationship between Vasseur and Renault Sport managing director Cyril Abiteboul. But the statement added that Renault and Vasseur expected to work together again in "a new form in the future". Renault added that the team would continue to be managed by president Jerome Stoll and Abiteboul.

Renault have undertaken a restructure in recent weeks after a difficult first season back as a team owner in 2016 when they finished ninth in the constructors' championship. Rob White, the long-time boss of Renault's F1 engine division close to Paris, was moved before Christmas to a new role as chief operating officer of the UK-based chassis part of the team in Enstone, Oxfordshire. Renault are undertaking an expansion programme aimed at increasing staff numbers from a little over 400 when they were in their previous guise as Lotus to more than 600 by the end of this year.

Vasseur, who also runs the ART GP2 team, had formed good relationships with the senior staff at Enstone. But his departure is likely to have little effect on the day-today running of the team under chief technical officer Bob Bell, technical director Nick Chester, sporting director Alan Permane and chief race engineer Ciaron Pilbeam, who joined this winter from McLaren.

More from the BBC:

Paddy Lowe has left his position as technical boss of Mercedes. The 54-year-old, who led the team to three drivers' and constructors' championship doubles in a row from 2014 to 2016, is expected to join Williams. He will be replaced by former Ferrari technical director James Allison, whose deal was signed some months ago, sources say, but is not yet confirmed.

Lowe is set to take on a role heading the technical side of the entire Williams group, including the F1 team. He is also expected to head up the burgeoning Williams Advanced Technologies business. However, sources say a final agreement between Lowe and Williams has not yet been reached.

As suggested by Latvian and rumoured since December, we now have confirmation of the Mercedes/Williams/Sauber drivers (This from BBC):

Valtteri Bottas has succeeded world champion Nico Rosberg as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate at Mercedes. The move, expected since December, also sees Brazilian Felipe Massa come out of retirement to replace the 27-year-old Finn at Williams.
Mercedes' young driver Pascal Wehrlein, passed over in favour of Bottas, joins the Swiss Sauber team.

I always come up with an idea for a rule change that never gets implemented. Bit of fun - predict the last finisher (or to be more accurate the last car not classed as DNF).

Having come second in 2016 I can't be arsed with proposing the increased points for being one place out rule for the 42nd* year running.

*possibly not that many.

Cor blimey he's finally gone:

Bernie Ecclestone has been removed from his position running Formula 1 as US giant Liberty Media completes its $8bn (6.4bn) takeover of the sport. Ecclestone, 86, who has been in charge for nearly 40 years, has been appointed chairman emeritus and will act as an adviser to the board. Chase Carey has had Ecclestone's former role of chief executive officer added to his existing position of chairman.

Liberty has also brought ex-Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn back to F1. The former Ferrari technical director, who had been acting as a consultant to Liberty, has been appointed to lead the sporting and technical side of F1.

I hope this is good news for F1 mike.

My view for what it's worth is that Brawn coming back is excellent news for the sport. An intelligent man who will not come up with silly ideas for the publicity of it.
Regarding the other side of the issue I am worried that the new owners will be trying to sell F1 to a younger audience with such ideas as 2 shorter races each weekend as per the junior formulae, reverse grids etc. Americanisation (??) is not something I would like to see.

From the BBC:

The Manor team have collapsed after administrators failed to find a buyer for the stricken business. Manor's operating company Just Racing Services has been in administration since 6 January, and FRP Advisory has been unable to find a buyer. Just Racing ceased trading on Friday, effectively ending the Manor team.

The staff were sent home on Friday and told they will be made redundant by the close of business on Tuesday after the payment of January salaries. FRP said there was "no sustainable operational or financial structure in place to maintain the group as a going concern". Joint administrator Geoff Rowley added the administration process "provided a moratorium" in the search for a buyer but "no solution could be achieved to allow for the business to continue in its current form".

Not sure what to make of this report from the BBC. There are obviously still some issues behind the scenes at McLaren. My highlights in red:

The man McLaren recruited to head their Formula 1 team has left just five months after joining. German Jost Capito, 58, was appointed as chief executive officer of McLaren Racing by former boss Ron Dennis last year and started work in September. But he has become a victim of McLaren's decision to split with Dennis.
A McLaren spokesman said: "Regrettably, we have not been able to find common ground on what is and will be needed to make the team successful again." The McLaren spokesman added that Capito, the former head of Volkswagen Motorsport, had "a strong commitment to bringing success back to McLaren. He wanted to build again a winning team and fully focus on making the McLaren F1 car competitive, with the aim of winning World Championships in coming years."
Sources close to Capito say he had not been working day-to-day at the company since early December but had remained formally an employee. He has only recently agreed departure terms.

2017 car launches confirmed so far. Other launches still to be confirmed. Which car are we looking forward to seeing the most? For me it has to be McLaren. With the dropping of the MP4 name, and a couple of subtle hints I have seen online, I am expecting it to look very different colour wise.

From the BBC:

Former Ferrari technical director James Allison has joined rivals Mercedes. Allison, 48, who left Ferrari in July, replaces Paddy Lowe as technical director at the reigning world champions. Lowe, who led the team to three consecutive drivers' and constructors' championship doubles from 2014 to 2016, left Mercedes in January.

Allison had two spells at Ferrari - working as chief aerodynamicist during the Michael Schumacher era of 2000-04. The Englishman then moved to the Renault team, where he was deputy technical director when Fernando Alonso won consecutive titles in 2005 and 2006. "It's a massive privilege to be given the trust of a position in a team that has done so spectacularly well in the past three season." said Allison, who was Ferrari's technical director from 2013 to 2016. "I am looking forward to playing my part in helping Mercedes go from strength to strength in the coming years."

Allison will report to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, who added: "It wasn't an easy task to find the right personality who can strengthen our experienced group of engineers, give our talented young team members the space to develop and also bring his own vision to this role. "James is a sharp engineer; I think we have found the perfect guy and the right fit with our senior leaders."

March 5- 40 years to the day since the tragic death of the supremely talented Tom Pryce, killed in a freak accident at Kyalami. In 1977 the driver was a much greater influence on a cars performance than now and it was still possible for privateers and teams with little sponsorship to be competitive if they unearthed a genuine talent. Tom Pryce was definitely that, scoring podium finishes for the unsponsored Shadow team and winning the non championship "Race of Champions" at a soaking Brands Hatch in 1975. Still remembered by all who saw his brilliant and flamboyant style.

Mercedes
Ferrari
Red Bull
Williams
Force India
Haas
Renault

McLaren
Sauber

McLaren could be slightly higher but their engine looks awful both in performance and reliability. They've changed the design philosophy this year which seems to have made it worse than last year. They weren't 30km/h down in the speed traps last year like they have been in testing.Major work needed.

What's the mail on Ferrari?
Hearing very conflicting reports on how they are going. Some are saying they'll push Mercedes and others are saying they're struggling.
Time will tell obviously but does anyone have the lowdown on them.

Don't think anyone knows. Test times are always confusing because who knows how much fuel, was the engine turned up etc. etc. I'm hoping that they and Red Bull at a minimum will give Mercedes a decent race this year.

Good to be back, been looking forward to F1 especially with Rosberg gone. Can't wait to get into it again and hopefully see Hamilton and Verstappen do well. Great to see Bernie gone as well, the new yank owners seem to have the right ideas. Think this will be a big year for Ferrari though I'm sure something will go wrong as usual...

Disagree really - they all made their bed.

They (Mclaren and Alonso) assumed they'd relive the Honda glory days despite the sport moving so far on from then.

It's embarrassing more than sad.

LH was having a whinge about the tyres so maybe they thought a different strategy would pay off. They should've told him to harden the **** up and do what he's payed to do and drive. 6 laps into the new set he's having another whinge. He's a great driver but he can be very precious at times.

So much for new cars and overtaking.

Was there the expectation that the new rules would promote overtaking?
I thought it was quite the opposite, wth increased downforce you get a lot more dirty air making the task of overtaking much more difficult.

At least it was not total domination by Mercedes and on more open tracks we might yet get some competitive racing. Glass still half full.

there's a good race report on autosport that explains it really well. Basically he was going to lose the lead either way. He was losing time to Vettel and they gambled on Verstappen pitting earlier than he did. Upshot is that the Ferrari was quicker

EddieEdwards
28-03-2017, 12:46 PM
Unwise to use Albert Park as an indicator to what the whole season is going to be like as the track is barely any better than Monaco for overtaking, but the signs are a bit worrying. We have these wider cars with higher speeds, greater downforce, wider and more durable tyres etc. which are supposedly much more exciting to drive and which look, feel and sound more like real racing cars, but the increased turbulence will make following and overtaking much harder. If there's more than one team involved in the fight for race wins and the championship, then that's certainly a good thing, but will the races themselves actually feature much racing?

From the BBC:

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will miss the Monaco Grand Prix in May so he can race in the Indianapolis 500. The double world champion has the full approval and support of McLaren and engine partner Honda, who are having a difficult season in Formula 1.

Alonso, 35, will race for the Honda-powered Andretti team on 28 May, and the car will be branded a McLaren. McLaren are yet to decide who will replace him in Monaco that weekend, but Jenson Button is a possibility.

Abu Dhabi is a bit more relaxed, not a great circuit, but worth going. You have the bonus of Ferrari World right next to the circuit, and free concerts each day, we saw Linkin Park, Kanye West and Prince the year we went, 2010.

Quick sum up from me.

Hamilton messed up. Ricciardo in fifth, oh dear. I dont think Merc will forget that. Well done Vettel. Max, what brakes, Mitch called that. Bottas needs more the in the new car. Still think Merc will get quicker. Paddy leaving is going to hurt. Why did he leave?

I have had a whisper, about factory moving with two teams.
