It was offered to cork city but declined. Might have something to do with Europa league qualifiers on at the same time

Gutted. Visited Cork a couple of times and that would have been a weekend to remember. Hopefully they'll rearrange?

I'll be in Ireland for the golf in the Summer. Just hope the friendly dates match :p

Whilst I'd absolutely love it to happen, 9th July seems very early in pre-season to me. Doubt many of the first team would be involved if it did.

It doesn't really fit with Sam's previous pre-season MO to have a game that early after the players are back.

Depends what division we are in, I guess.

The Premier season starts on 12th August, the champ a week before (as per last season)

And don't forget Limerick will be slap bang in the middle of their League season. It would be a test.

Just like Waterford, then.

The majority of the Palace Tour of Duty party turned up right on kick off, in an extreme state of refreshment and then cried like girls when the Progs had already sold out.

90k is a heck of a lot of money to a club like that. :(

WorthingEagle
19-05-2017, 06:48 PM
Something doesn't add up there, why would they want to play us if not to make a bit of money, and why would we not pay for our own pre-season costs?

Dorking .Eagle
19-05-2017, 07:01 PM
The biggest clubs charge a heck of a lot of money to appear in a friendly. I believe AFC Bournemouth paid over a million for a game against Real Madrid reserves a few years ago.

I think we paid Lazio 100k to come to Selhurst in 2013 (the game where their fans were supposedly banned from coming)

Palace aren't in that sort of company, however it would normally be expected that a host club of a similar standing (eg when we went to Augsburg of the Bundesliga a few summers ago) would cover our travel and accommodation expenses (on the basis they'd make that back on gate receipts) in return for us turning up and playing them

This sounds like mainly a very early pre-season get back to fitness/training camp, with a game at the end of it.

I couldn't imagine Limerick charging more that 15euro a ticket for such a fixture, and their typical home crowds for a league game seem to be 1200-1500, so they simply don't look like they can meet out costs/expenses out of any gate receipts, unless a generous sponsor wants to help out.

The thing is, very early back into training we would ideally be looking for 'lesser' opposition, more for fitness than competitive football. I wouldn't think we'd want to play Bundesliga or Serie A teams that early in our schedule.

In previous years, early on we'd just play the likes of Barnet, but ideally the players would be able to go together somewhere for a week with a training centre so they can all be together for a decent spell. Worse case scenario there's always Scotland as Keltic and Elgin have suggested!

I realise it's not as simple as this, but if they charged a couple of quid for a live stream, I'd be happy to pay for it. Seems a bit much for such a small club to pay.

Not that I have heard of but if pre season was as indicated by Sam prior to departure ie playing good quality foreign teams I recon Sat 29 July there could be. We have Bromley that day but that's a club xi so first team will be playing somewhere. I'm only guessing and could end up somewhere exotic such as Fulham!!

The biggest problem with Scottish teams is that they have the League Cup group stage during pre-season. We would have to do before the Hong Kong tour.

Both Dundee sides are in the same group so maybe we could go to that instead. I'm sure the likes of Elgin and Bubbs and all the other Scottish based posters will let us stay with them.

And what was the NI game? It's not one I remember hearing about.

Whatever happened to turning up at a league side a couple of divisions below? Let's go over to Charlton or Millwall and give them a morale boosting battering.

Or we could go down to Crawley and lose, again.
