Any reason for the extra rest day?

It's annoying Giro isn't covered by ITV4. Still good to see some British riders this time around.

Spunky's Superstars are back for the start of the grand tour season, after the incredible success which was last year's TDF I predict I'll be put firmly back in my place in the broom wagon by the end of the giro

The Giro is certainly not as hard as it has been in recent years. There aren't as many silly-gradient stages, there are quite a few stages for sprinters, a few for the "puncheurs" and even some mountain stages but with finishes at the bottom of descents (Nibbles will like these!). Quite a mixed bag really.
I've got a team made up of what I hope are all GC riders but one. However I am toying with the idea of putting in a 2nd sprinter, there are enough stages to warrant that IMO.

Have just returned from an epic cycling trip in Portugal where we travelled the length of the N2 from Chaves in Northern Portugal down to Faro which we completed in eight days averaging approx 90/95 kms per day(total distance approx 750kms) a truly memorable journey and would thoroughly recommend it - good simple food both at lunchtimes and evenings at all our varied stopping points

Weather was very cold to start with and we had to stop one afternoon due to snow which made headlines on Portuguese TV as even in the north they rarely see snow!!

So did I. It doesn't often happen so it's good when the sprinters' teams get it all wrong.
Actually he was one of Sam Bennett's lead-out riders. If I told you that Sam Bennett was in my team, you would understand why this f*ck-up took place! More Gordon Bennett than Sam Bennett if you ask me!

This are the only highlights I've found for the moment:

It was great to watch. Makes for such exciting racing. Maybe it's me, but I'd say crosswinds have had a more prominent impact in the past few years of grand tours compared to the 90's or noughties. Cobbles too. But maybe I just watch more than I did! I certainly didn't have eurosport back then.

Tomorrow's interesting, a bit like a classic. Pretty long, a finish that over it's last km is @ 8%. There's a few bumps near the finish that should force a selection. It's a puncheur's stage and looking through the roster I don't see a lot of them. Costa maybe but I think G Thomas might be fancying this.

Having said all of which it could be a breakaway.

A day when some teams under-estimated the strength of the breakaway riders...

I'm not sure they did. The GC teams seemed happy to neutralise the bonus seconds. They could've closed it. Gaviria seemed pretty downbeat when recieving his points jersey, probably disappointed that his ambitions in that were harmed by Stuyven and Quickstep's ambition to keep BJ in pink.

Does G have good climbing form at the moment?

Difficult to tell. They've only done the one major test on Etna and that was in to a headwind so no-one wanted to strike out as they'd save their energies for later. Sunday's climb should be more instructive.

Here's tomorrow. Looks like another breakaway to me, the finish is quite difficult and there are some selective climbs in the run in so as referenced earlier I reckon the GC teams will be happy to see the time bonuses neutralised especially ahead of Sunday's big stage.

I'm gutted for Thomas and Yates!:(

Absolutely. I thought Yates in particular was looking really good.

I see the Orica DS has had a bit of a rant about Movistar continuing to drive the pace. I couldn't see that they did anything wrong, personally.

In hindsight, maybe Yates shouldn't have expended so much energy in his attempt to regain contact with the (diminished) lead group?

What drama! Can't help but think Quintana would've wanted a bit more out of that though, he's got to be hoping to ride in to form for the third week. Dumoulin will surely be in pink by end of Tuesday.

When Quintana went, I thought it was race over. But Dumoulin rode sensibly and strongly. If he gets, say, 2 minutes on Tuesday, it will make things very interesting.

Same with GT who was actually reducing the gap on Quintana until he blew up from the effort. Adrenaline I suppose.

I think Yates and Thomas would both have finished with Dumoulin and Pinot on Sunday had they not crashed (nothing to do with my Velogames team ).
It looks like Quintana has only two rivals in Pinot and Dumoulin. Pinot has improved in time-trialling and on descents, plus he has less pressure on his shoulders when riding away from France. Dumoulin will gain time on the ITTs but will he be strong enough in the high-altitude stages?

Thomas pulled out this morning. No chance of winning, but will be fit enough to be part of the Sky train in the TDF.
Upsetting 'cos his first thoughts should be for the people who picked him in their Velogames teams. He could easily have ridden himeself into the Top 10 and possibly the Top 5. He's got his priorities all wrong.
Here's hoping Yates doesn't pull out too!

What does everyone reckon? The bookies seem to be saying something like 4/7 Dumoulin, 6/4 Quintana.

I'd like Dumoulin to do it (nothing to do with my Velogames team ). Yesterday's stage was just one climb with about 5 hard kilometres so quite manageable for Dumoulin. There are 4 other mountainous stages still to come which are a lot harder.
Movistar were tactically cr*p yesterday riding at the front instead of letting TD's team do the donkey work and then at the bottom of the final climb 2 of their riders sprinted away and nobody followed. Even Amador was blown away very early.
Movistar should send Amador down the road in a breakaway to put pressure on TD's team.
Dumoulin was in a similar position in the Vuelta two years ago and cracked. He's got more experience now. He can afford to lose quite a bit of time since he should take at least a minute out of Quintana in the final stage!

Does Quintana still do most of his training alone in Colombia? I still think he's not professional enough and for me is always carrying a bit of excess weight.

I think that Movistar need one of those ambush days now. Dumoulin may conceivably crack somewhere along the way, but you can't really plan for that.

Personally, I hope Dumoulin wins. But I also hope that Movistar don't ride just to protect second place.

I thought yesterday's stage would have been a lot more interesting despite the breakaway judging from the profile which made it look all uphill for about 80km. It was no more than a very false flat. Plus I can understand that the GC riders neede a "day-off".

I think today's stage could be the decisive one. something always happens in these very short, very lumpy stages.

That was a really odd stage yesterday, NQ looked cooked, TD looked very strong and clearly had it under control, enough in fact to throw a few wobbles at NQ and VN. Landa really needs a lesson in how to control or finish a stage. The way he has been taking those last corners is comical, talk about an open door policy.

Blimey that was interesting. Movistar went on the attack on the first descent helped out my Nibali, Pinot and Zakarin's teams. Dumoulin (and also Mollema, Yates and Kruijswijk) was caught out and was almost a minute behind at one point.
Rumours coming out of Italy are saying that Dumoulin was having a pee-stop when Movistar attacked. To be confirmed!

I'm still wondering what would have been if there hadn't been that crash. Sky may have had two GC contenders. Landa looks very strong, and Thomas was looking good too.Yates would have been a lot closer too. Let's not forget that Dumoulin lost his main mountain man in Kelderman in the crash too!

Forza is putting in quite a late surge in Velogames thanks to Landa!

...

The boy's done well. In weighing up whether to take him or say Thomas I think you have to appreciate he would always have a bit of 'Plan B' about him if losing a chunk of time which 'G' usually does at some point - albeit not his fault this time.

I think I'm a bit light at top of GC to have a run at this though. Looking forward to tomorrow's stage, hopefully Landa remembers his velogames duties rather than just thinking stage + KOM, job done.

I'm hoping Dumoulin doesn't have another off-day. Pinot is finishing the strongest of the GC riders and with a good ITT, he could finish 2nd overall, and could even win the thing if Dumoulin has another bad day at the office.
Overall I could have 4 in the Top 8 in GC which could gain me a place or two on Sunday evening.
Tomorrow will be fascinating!

FORZA SELHURST

The Grappa is an uneven climb where it's going to be difficult to establish a rhythm. I think that's where they're going to put him in trouble. There's also sub-plots like Yates & Pozzo needing time ahead of the TT which will affect things and may create groups up the road.

I think they'll probably pop him again like at the Vuelta but far from certain about it. Hoping for rain in Milan on sunday just for the entertainment value.

So here's tomorrow's stage. In an athletic sense Dumoulin, Jungels & Zakarin should probably be caning it. However, I think you've got to think about bike handling especially towards the end, stuff on the road and how high they dare put those tyre pressures given the gaps are so minimal. You've got to expect at least one incident of note.

While reading the previews for today's stage, I was reminded of this story from the decisive 1984 Giro time trial, when the Italian Moser pipped the Frenchman Fignon :

As Fignon told historian Les Woodland in a Procycling magazine interview, “In the time trial, just get out the tapes from the television and see for yourself. It’s very clear. The television helicopter was flying just behind him. You can see from the images. They are all from low down and behind him, so that the blades of the helicopter were pushing him along. Then look at the pictures of me and they’re all taken from in front of me, so that while the helicopter was pushing Moser along, it was pushing me back.”

Dumoulin beware!

Dumoulin beware!

French TV mentioned that Giro the other day during one of the 100th anniversary special reports. Not only was there the helicopter incident flying behind Moser to "push" him but also in front of Fignon to slow him down, but more importantly the "Stelvio" stage was shortened due to a risk of bad weather. There was of course no bad weather at all. Moser was also pushed up most of the climbs whereas Fignon got time added on for an illegal "ravitaillement". We shouldn't forget that Fignon was spat upon and had vinegar thrown at him too. (Urine is a much more recent invention)!

Apologies for late response. I was in Italy for a week in the middle of the race doing my own 128mile, 3800m ascent of climbing event. My wife and I decided to stay away from the news and watch it all after we got back.
We've just finished and so glad we decided to watch it all not knowing. Great race, deserved winner and pleased to top our league.
Shame I missed on deadline for Criterium.
