Are there still plans to have six matchdays across about 18 days over Christmas and New Year (owing to ending the season early for the World Cup)?

That would be madness.

This will be the 2nd season of a 3 year deal. The current packages are:

Sky: Package A comprises 28 games on Saturday lunchtimes (12.30pm). - has 6 'first pick' games from the 38 rounds

BT Sport: Package B has 28 games at tea-time on Saturdays (5.30pm) - has 9 first picks

Sky: Package C has 28 games kicking off between 1.30pm and 2.15pm on Sundays.

Sky: Package D is the 4.00 - 4.30pm Sunday bundle of 28 games -- with 18 'first pick' games.

Sky: Package E is the 'Monday night' (8.00pm) bundle of 28 games, with a minimum 18 games on Mondays plus a maximum of 10 on Fridays. There are no first picks.

BT Sport: Package F has 14 games, a mix of midweek and Saturday/ Sunday lunchtime games including three first picks

Sky: Package G is a bundle of 14 games on Bank Holidays and other Sunday matches with two first picks.

Hopefully

Why hopefully? The negative impact would be greater on teams of Palace's size, and the quality of the football more generally would suffer.

Dont mind the idea of a Friday night home game or fairly close away game - eg London...

Allowing for a worst case scenario where a team reaches the later stages of all competitions similar to Man Utd last season the fixtures can just be fitted in if teams play on 23rd December, 26th December, 30th December and 1st January.

This would leave only 4 midweeks throughout the rest of the season where no fixtures including European games and potential cup replays are currently allocated to use as alternative dates.

Back in 1969/70, the season ended on April 6th to enable preparation for the World Cup in Brazil. This was for a 42-game season, admittedly before all this European-greed nonsense. Then, we had 7 games in 21 days in August.

Due to sponsorship reasons..

Back in the day, Saint and Greavsie did a League Cup draw with Donald Trump, in Trump Tower New York!

Another mere aside, Premier League are considering offering 11.30 Sunday kick offs as a permanent arrangement, as part of the next 3 year TV deal starting in 2019. Apparently would be the ideal time for games to be watched on tv in Asia.

Having read the latest Palace Addiction book you can understand that the current kick off times aren't ideal for that part of the world.

Another suggestion I heard this morning is 19:45 on a Saturday. There will be an increase of Televised games it's just a case on when they will be. I think we will know by Christmas when the bidding starts.

19:45 on Saturday might have policing implications. I remember the first attempt at a Saturday night game, it was Rooney's first game at Everton (as a Man United player) and there was a lot of crowd trouble.

They'd have to pick really 'harmless' fixtures, like Watford at Liverpool etc, where there wouldn't be a sniff of trouble

It'd be nice to have a favourable run in for a change maybe featuring Brighton for a bit of extra spice. The tricky games against the big boys i'd like first up before they get into gear and to get them over and done with. That run in last season gave me sleepness nights for months and frankly could have very easily killed us. I don't want to rely on beating Chelsea and Arsenal to stay up again pretty please.

Bit of a myth that one. There's often one that does better than expected but more often than not they take a while to adapt and have a run in September/October.

We beat Norwich fairly convincingly first game a couple of years back.

Yep. You are definitely right. There are some exceptions but in general teams take a while to adapt at PL level. Like us under Holloway too.

Add to that, when the season starts, they will still be trying to strengthen their team and get the necessary signings in they need to compete.

on the basis that 40 points is the first target, we need minimum of 10 wins in the relegation 'league'.

THis has to be a 3 pointer for us, plain and simple, beat the teams expected to be in the relegation mix at the end of the season.

Having said that Huddersfield fans will have wanted a home fixture but on balance will think Palace away could be worse.

14-06-2017, 08:46 AM
I don't think I have ever been as certain that the first game of the season will define how the rest of it goes as much as I am now.

This is the sort of match that, in recent years, against a team expected to struggle, we would normally lose 1-0 to a defensive mistake, having controlled possession and created very little. A defeat will probably signal another season looking over our shoulders, and worrying about other teams’ results, whereas a victory may, just may, show the first signs that our horrific home form is moving behind us.

Overall, looking at the list, there doesn’t seem to be a nightmare run of fixtures, and the run in looks a good bet to pick up a few points to push us up the league, be it to safety or top half!

GreatGonzo

If the police requested it , it must be because they fancy the overtime.

EVERY evening game there is trouble. Fans spend all day drinking before the big match, those intent on trouble take the day off. The disruption in town, on the trains with fans and commuters all trying to use overcrowded trains is ridiculous.

If you want sober fans and least trouble you make it 12pm KO on a Saturday or Sunday. That is when i am expecting the home game to move to.

That will probably apply to Huddersfield more than us - they have much more work to do in transfer window than we do. Last season the fact we had so many players in the Euros for so long also didn't help us prepare. Mandanda, Hennessey, Cabaye, Ledley and Williams all came back late.

Its a very good fixtures to start the season with even Liverpool away for our 2nd game knowing how good our record there has been of late.
But we MUST ensure we make it a winning start against Huddersfield as we cant afford a repeat of the "giveaway" home record of last season, and hopefully accumulate a realistic 8/9 points in those first Six games to ease the pressure that will come later.

Just taking a closer look this morning at the Fixture list, made me think its a wonderful opportunity crucially to make a good start with our First Five games apart from Liverpool winnable, even against them we have a good track record of late.
Then we finish the season with Six games that are better than we could ever have hoped for with points surely there for the taking, this is not me taking anything for granted especially after our performances/results last season against "lower" teams. But reviewing that list must give fans and management added confidence and belief that we Should go through a less stressful end of season than before.

Can see us winning the first 5 games.

The first Brighton game is away as a night game. They'll score none.

Brighton away was always going to be on a weeknight in winter on police advice. The home fixture will no doubt get moved to the Sunday lunchtime slot as well.

I will most definitely be taking Wednesday 29th Nov off work!

New manager with no Premier League experience, against a team new to the Premier league, so a bit of an unknown in terms of tactical setup, could see you right :(

But I go 3-0 to us :)

Anyone else think that in this modern age of football, the Premier League / Sky, / BT Sport should be able to announce the live TV games for August, September and October when they first announce the games in mid June?

I mean, we have goal line technology and are slowly introducing VAR....surely they could stretch themselves to get the live games for the first 3 months announced at the same time as the fixtures are released?

Crazy I know.

.

That's not all, found this about the 1st round draw which took place in Thailand (WTF!)

First round draw

There had been a number of errors in the draw for the first round. Many fans experienced problems with the sound on the live stream from Thailand, therefore relying on the graphics. However there were also a number of errors with the graphics: Charlton Athletic were shown to be drawn in two ties, whilst a number of other teams including AFC Wimbledon, Brentford, Swindon Town, Norwich City, Forest Green Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Yeovil Town were all shown to have been given wrong draws. The English Football League later issued a statement apologising for the errors that had been made and stating that the draw had not been compromised with all clubs receiving confirmation of their ties.

EDIT : Found the League cup dates!

Carabao Cup
•Tuesday 8 August - Round One
•w/c August 21 - Round Two
•w/c September 18 - Round Three
•w/c October 23 - Round Four
•w/c December 18 - Round Five
•w/c January 8 - Semi-Final First Leg
•w/c January 22 - Semi-Final Second Leg
•Sunday 25 February - Carabao Cup Final

Last season, Liverpool had 29 out of their 38 Prem games televised (3 out of 4), all but one of which (the last day) were moved either by date or kick off time for that tv coverage

Man United had 54 out of their 64 games in all comps played on live tv last season

I think its fair to say we are likely to see a few fixtures moved out of the opening two months!

Definitely won't be a game on the Friday night.

My guess:
Chelsea Vs Burnley Sat 12.30
Man Utd Vs West Ham Sun 1.30
Brighton Vs Man City Sun 4.00
Newcastle Vs Tottenham Mon 8.00

If there is a fifth televised game it will slot in at 5.30 Saturday and could be any of those matches above moved to then and possibly our match drafted in. I personally would still be surprised if we are televised.

Brighton are on BT with the Saturday 5:30 KO on the opening weekend and Newcastle are the first Super Sunday slot on the day after. Was always very little chance that our game vs. Huddersfield would be on TV simply because it's not a very attractive tie to the neutral.
Huddersfield are on TV the week after however with their home game against Newcastle.
We're not on TV until the 10th September.

Considering that 20 is generally the base price for VTWC EUS-MAN, I'd say go for that, you probably won't find it any cheaper!
