Not sure if anyone else has been following this, but England are playing Mexico in the quarter-finals today at 12pm (live on Eurosport 2).

Currently watching Zambia 2-2 Italy. Great game. We should take a look at the Zambia and Spartak Moscow winger Fashion Sakala. He looks class.

I saw that they knocked the Germans out.

We're favourites against Mexico, just stuck 6 quid on it. Hopefully we'll beat them. Are our U20 team any good?

Kirby
05-06-2017, 10:01 AM
Yeah some decent players in there. Calvert-Lewin, Cook, Solanke and Lookman being the most recognisable.

Smashed Argentina 3-0 in the first game!

Kirby
05-06-2017, 10:04 AM
They're also using the tournament to test video replays. Argentina had a player sent off against us for a blatant elbow that wasn't seen at the time.

Unfortunately it hasn't worked in this Zambia vs. Italy game though. Ref wrongly sent a player off despite spending three minutes watching a replay, then another player got intentionally stamped on and it wasn't even referred.

Can't see it catching on to be honest. The delays are ridiculous and they still struggle to reach the correct verdict.

Far East Eagle

I like it when they try something new, they've been trialling it in the Aussie A-league as well. But again, people have been moaning about the inconsistences and amount of time it takes to reach a decision

Kirby
05-06-2017, 10:11 AM
Yeah I saw one A-League game where they had to go to the stands two or three times in the space of a few minutes. It was ridiculous, but pretty entertaining as an armchair fan :D

A-League refs are wildly incompetent, it baffles me as to how they thought having another one with a TV would solve anything

Hope they scrap it

And there we go again...

Red card for absolutely nothing and it wasn't even referred to the video officials. Laughable.

Agreed. Thought he was shite today but he's looked the business for Everton.

Great to see we've taken it more seriously this year, when they had it in Colombia I believe in 2011 the best England player that we took was Matt Phillips, the rest were nobodies and we got eliminated without scoring a goal!

Given that I was living there at the time, it was seriously underwhelming so well done to the current crop and management.

BBC sports editor Dan Roan

These are encouraging times for English youth football. Last season, the Under-21s won the Toulon tournament for the first time in 22 years. Last month the Under-17s reached the final of the European Championships.

The U20s have now done something no England team has managed since 1993.

Nigelbrag
06-06-2017, 05:57 PM
Unfortunately they never seem to step up to the next level probably due to never being given the opportunity, just look at the talented youngsters at Chelsea and City as an example. This needs to be rectified or we will never develop an England senior team of note, what is it 51 years since we won a tournament of substance.

England were very poor against Japan. We won thanks to two penalties, but only had about 3 shots all game. (Japan had over 20 shots on goal I think.) Although stats do not mean much, whenever we had the ball we just to hoofed it up the pitch.

That's tournaments for you

England have packed their bags quite a few times over the years when they've been the better team, you have to suck it up. Get the job done who cares how!

Yes, hopefully as they had already qualified, and Japan needed to win the game, they did not seem so good. To be honest, I was only able to watch the game as I was in Japan. I don't think they showed it here.

There have been several incidents that have been referred to the video ref and they've still managed to get it wrong. A couple of them were blatantly obvious.

There have also been some which should've been referred but weren't (e.g. Josh Onomah getting sent off in the quarter-final for absolutely nothing).

There's just no consistency.

Who decides if it's referred?

I have no idea. Sometimes the ref would get a call in his ear. Sometimes he'd randomly decide to refer it himself (normally when surrounded by players).

There was one game where the ref took a full four minutes to decide and he still managed to get it wrong.

I've said for ages video evidence should only be used for matters of fact (ball crossing the line, possibly offsides). This tournament has proven it.

The only other thing worth considering would be reviewing potential red card 'off the ball' incidents that haven't been seen at the time. That seemed to work quite well, with a couple of players being sent off for blatant elbows.

I was really impressed with Josh Onomoah. At times he looked a bit like he was a man playing in a boys team. Spurs really have got some talent together at youth level. Lookman struggled to impose himself suffering from heavy marking whenever he got close to the ball and growing impatient he was losing possession. Solanke looked bright, Cook was busy and effective, Tomori looked very good.

The other one that really stood out was Soteldo who had an amazing burst of pace and was reminiscent of the first mins I remember of watching a very young Maradona. Not saying he is that good but it did remind me of him and would like to see more of him, which I suspect is just a matter of time. Currently playing in Chile but I suspect he will be on a plane across the pond soon.

Really enjoyed watching the football at that level. It was for the most part positive albeit patient.
