View Full Version : Federations Cup

Just started - pretty silly precursor to next year's WC. Principally to test the stadiums out.

New Zealand always get to play in it. LOL

A few interesting games if you are starved of football.

Tomorrow is Mexico vs Portugal followed by Cameroon vs Chile.

http://www.fifa.com/confederationscup/matches/index.html

Russia vs New Zealand on now.

It's very entertaining that the video ref is bringing such incredulity to the so-called pundits. How very dare the referee want to use it to referee the game properly, and not to prove that pundits know what they are talking about.

Have the feeling the ref may have blown before the ball went in though, so you could argue the ref had already made the decision and the players were playing to the whistle.

The idea of video is to supposedly to help officials with controversial decisions. Once or twice a match at most. Not to replace them.

And this is the decision FIFA have to make with it.

Australia played well in that.Have to be happy with that performance from Australia. Disappointed that in the 2nd half at 1-0 we really did look like a decent chance of getting the 2nd we needed to overtake Chile. But then again Chile had plenty of chances also.

From the Aussie perspective, a lot more speed of movement and hassling for possession over all but the last 10 minutes or so.

A quandary for Australia that our midfield looked its best for many games but excluded arguably our best 2 players - Mooy and Rogic. We looked slow, halting and ponderous in the previous group games (and arguably in most of our performances for some months now).

Nice to see Ronaldo hold back and watch his team mates sacrifice themselves.

He always holds back, can hardly blame him for not taking one of the first. He probably didn't think they would miss every penalty :D

Agree. In fact I said that if they didn't score in the first 15mins or so with all that pressure they would lose to a goal or two on the break.

how and why do they keep churning out top quality players and teams? they look quicker, have better technique, stronger, hungrier, prepare better and our lot couldn't even beat a team of Icelandic journeymen in the last EC, this lot would probably comfortably beat our first team, why do we continually get it so so wrong? I still say it and people laugh at me but they could have hit us for double figures in that 2010 WC match as Mavis made a handful of top parry's, they made us look like a Conference outfit.

don't blame them tbh. They had a nailed on pen not given by the ref in the last game who then refused to go to the VAR.

Not that it's right though... but if FIFA don't give the players, the coaches or it seems the refs clear guidelines that what do you expect?

They have picked a youthful team here and won it, and still win the U21 Euros with an even more youthful side.

Very strong depth.

Well done Chile. Considering half the first 11 are mediocre players, to get to three finals and win two of them is hell of an achievement.

Next year's WC is the last chance for this golden generation, and then back to struggling to qualify.

Further proof that VAR is a load of bollocks unless it's a 'matter of fact' situation like a ball crossing the line.

The U20 World Cup and Confederations Cup have proven it'll never work with some spectacularly bad decisions.

Personally I think that there's an agenda to make it look as shit as possible so as not to have it - or the officials involved are simply that corrupt that they won't take the appropriate action, even when it's in front of their face.

Just shows how embarrassingly bent professional football really is AFAIC.
