View Full Version : Slide from back in the early 80's

Dusted off some old slides to find I had taken this shot down at the Palace early 80's, my guess is 84/85 season. No info as to who it's against although it looks early season to me and is that Mabbutt taking a shot? Maybe it's Tommy Langley? not sure at all. Got some more from our 3-1 defeat to Forest at the end of the 81 season.

Anyway just thought it might interest somebody.. maybe not, if there is interest then i'll post up the pictures from the Forest game.

Whoever it was, it seems strange that he's attempting a shot from such a poor angle whilst under pressure, instead of passing to one of the numerous midfielders no doubt out of shot, streaming forward in support with intelligent runs as part of our breathtaking total football policy at the time

All of 3,752 in attendance.

Only just over 12,000 for the Forest match in which Walsh wore the number 9 shirt. (I was one of them but have no recollection of the abject 1-3 defeat.)

Not backing down just yet. That match was played on August Bank Holiday in 1984 so it's still possible. The crowd is sparse but whether it's small enough to be under 4k total is another matter.

I have cheated and googled Northampton's kit for that year (was that allowed?) and it does look very similar.

Fairly sure Northampton was Bank Holiday. The crowd is patchy at best in the pic, and in the section near the goal. Was there that day, and also at The County Ground for the second leg when we scraped through on aggregate.

It was, I was at both games, the second leg was an evening game with probably less than 100 Palace there.

Both games were really grim though, was it 1-0 and 0-0?

I'm 90 per cent convinced its Aylott, as a result of which I have broken out in hives. It doesn't look like an evening game to me, the light is too bright for some time after 7.45pm in late August.

I'm wondering if it might in fact be from early in the 1985/86 season, when Aylott was still on the books, but from a quick scan of the early fixtures that season there is no obvious candidate as the opponents except possibly Sunderland? Also, my memory may be failing me but I don't recall Aylott starting in the early games of that season?

Bipe

In addition - if you look at the fans on the terraces they are virtually all in short sleeved shirts and in fact a few are shirtless. Again this implies an afternoon kick off unless we were blessed with a particularly intense late summer heatwave in whichever year it was.

The pitch looks in really good nick so I am ruling out the prospect of it being an end of season fixture.

Fascinating stuff though for an old fart like me.

The 0-0 away at Northampton was my first Palace match. My dad took me as a birthday treat, although he got us tickets in the home end. This was Coppell's first season wasn't it? . The second leg was really foggy too, so you couldn't actually see what was happening at the other end of the pitch. That old Northampton ground was really weird too, being 3 sided, with a rope separating it off from the cricket pitch on the other side.

Was Coppell's first season and this particular match was Steve's very first victory as a manager.

We went on to play Sunderland in the next round of the Milk Cup. Lost 2-1 away and drew 0-0 at home. The home leg was televisied for some reason for highlights on either Sportsnight or Midweek Sport Special. Remember being so excited seeing the cameras there on entering Selhurst. It really was a unique event back in those days.

Out of interest, Sunderland went on to make the final of the Milk Cup that year, losing to Norwich.

The Homesdale looks sparse too.

At one point, the heavens opened and there was a downpour of almost biblical proportions. Given the meaninglessness of the match, the police/stewards allowed anybody on the Holmesdale to gain cover in The New Stand Enclosure.

It created a great atmosphere with the most of the Holmesdale singers relocating to The Arthur as we came to love it in the 80s with good-natured gallows humour ('Going-down, going-down, going-down' & 'we're so shit it's unbelievable')

My recollection is that this was the match when the switch from Holmesdale to AW as the Palace End officially started. I know that in reality it was a gradual process but this was a significant step on the way.

You actually saw him running??? Sure it wasn't David Icke?

Should have filmed it on your phone mate, would have gone viral on YouTube. Aylott in full flight was like a blind panda with arthritic knees. Martin O'Neill once described him as having defined the word 'immobile', and that was when O'Neill was paying him a compliment.

What a collection of great strikers we had back then! Trevor Aylott, Tommy Langley, Chris Jones, Andrew McCulloch, Ian Edwards and Tony Mahoney. When Kevin Mabbutt turned up it was like having Pele in the team compared to that lot :) Had a soft spot for Edwards though for scoring that goal against Burnley that saved us from relegation, I think it was his last game for us.
