This could be interesting. Not sure we have ever played anything like De Boer's system before. Didn't Big Mal play 6 at the back v Leeds in the cup once?

Anyway I was wondering how many players, past or presently still playing could adapt or have played well with 3 at the back?

I'll start with the obvious one, Victor Moses.

All of varying quality but...

Mandanda
Fonte - Sakho - Craig Moore
Moses - Ambrose - Ben Watson - Ashley Cole
Routledge - Murray - Bolaise

Interestingly after relegation in 95 Palace adopted a continental approach that I think was inspired by the Ajax Champions league winning team (Including our Frank)

We were set to play with a sweeper or back 3 and wingbacks.

Andy Roberts was the sweeper - And Marc Edworthy and Dean Gordon were the wing backs. In terms of style those 3 suited the formation brilliantly. And probably (not being harsh) improved versions of those 3 would be exactly what we need at the moment.

Thomas and Gray as the box to box midfield two

Later on Venables played a back 3 and Hayden Mullins was spare man/sweeper.

Pretty sure he also played under Bruce in a back 3 with system that worked brilliant for a short period.

Andy Roberts was class at sweeper. Read the game superbly, and had time to use his great range of passing. Class act, never really recaptured his form playing a Centre mid in a two, but still a fine player all the same.

Guess Sansom would of been more than capable at played LWB or do the older generation feel he wouldn't suit the system?

Paul Hinshelwood as well at RWB?

Fonte Sakho Mullins
Moses Watson Hughes Cole
Routledge AJ Ambrose

We're yet too see what kind of 343 Frank wants but the assumption is a more possession oritentated one that presses high so I believe it requires a more mobile center forward with the energy to both press and offer good movement up top.

I don't think that front three are necessarily meant to be wingers I'm sure it's more inside forwards as they call it who should be getting 7-8 goals a season.

He could have really made Jeff Hughes kick on to the next level. Sadly, we'll never know.

I do feel Stuart Green would flourish in this set up as well. :D

Deano despite being a Croydon boy, has now settled up North. He set up Pro Motiv8 2 years ago. The company provides football coaching for teams, groups and individuals during the school week, football and futsal fun days during the school holidays, and futsal tournaments, leagues and birthday parties. I also believe he iacts as an agent to some of the youngsters.

Gavin Mahon would have really flourished in De Pardew's setup.

He was a few years ahead of me at St. Mary's and a few years behind Little Al.

Another one of our own, I feel should get more love from us, arguably our best left back since Kenny (Ashley Cole was class but wasn't here long)

Now that was a weird one, I could see the logic at the time as he was an experienced pro, but we didn't get even 1 minute out of him.

Really disliked him at first, being overweight, ex wall and generally crap.

Then he had a Townsend like transformation and became a decent servant here.

He had a spell playing for Whitby Town on the Yorkshire coast.

We played with a 3 centre backs and wing backs under Bruce for a while.

Mullins was excellent as ball playing defender and Julian Gray was decent as left wing back.

Sansom would have killed it. Any of the properly good goalies, Peter Nicholas, Cannon who read the game so beautifully, Jansen, Bright, Puncheon, Cabaye, McGoldrick.....
