Brighton vs West Brom is the sort of match that usually the promoted team would win, and people would be like "oh well maybe Brighton are PL ready".

I know West Brom are good, but Brighton not winning would be an upset. :moo:

Thats a clear red card. Even though he's trying to win the ball he's completely missed it and gone studs up. If he'd have been an outfield player and the tackle had hit him in the knee with that kind of studs up it would have been a red so this is the same.

Massive shame for the game as it was heating up nicely..
Feel a bit more Mane - ref could give a yellow and nobody would complain, however his foot is head high with studs showing and a player rushing towards him - its too risky.

Until this year if a keeper or defender did their job and just missed out to a player who was through they would be guaranteed to be sent off. (Be interesting to see how the change in guidance goes this year)

He may have to go for it but if he hasn't won the ball, his foot is head high, his studs therefore have to be showing, it might be unfortunate, but its a definite red.

John Moss is a ******* useless ref for the most part. Although feel for him here. The split on whether this is a red or not is completely 50 50. There is absolutely no winning some times.

My own view? A red. Accident or Not, it blatantly endangered the safety of another player and within the rules is a red.

Still not fully convinced it was a red and i'm certain a number of other ref's may have opted for a yellow. But i was definitely clouded by Moss being the bell in black because given the outcome of the keeper's injuries, then a red card is probably justified. I'd have been pissed off if i was given a red for it but you'd probably accept it after the event, but had Mane gone for the header instead or even pulled out late, you can nigh on guarantee he would have been on the end of a massive clattering. Would Moss have been so quite so keen to reach for the red then (hypothetical i know) i'm not so sure.

Would he have ended up with a fractured cheekbone/jaw? Probably not.

There's not even a question. Gary Neville is such a bellend, how he can't understand it is CLEARLY dangerous which by definition IS a red...

I think a fair few of us were guilty of squealing it wasn't a red, probably because Moss gave it. He's just as quick at giving his opinion as many others are, just in a bigger glare and i'm pretty sure there may be a climb down of some sorts, like others are already doing. As for what injuries Mane could have ended up with, who knows given the size and speed those keepers like to hurtle out of their box at. Plenty have ended up a mess when on the receiving end of those big oafs, so don't get that line of reasoning even though its hypothetical.

I fully understand the situation, just as I fully understand other things that would make your head explode. I just don't think that's a red card when the only alternative for Sane was to be a pussy and leave it to the keeper who may or may not get there first. Sometimes, football is dangerous, and it can't be helped. What does sending him off achieve? The next player in that situation is going to do exactly the same, or find himself dropped for the next game.

Bear in mind, I hate Liverpool and it's ******* hilarious that they're 5-0 down as a result.

Agree. The law may be an ass, whether in football or the real world. You may not agree with it, but those rules and laws should be enforced irrespective of whether you agree with them. They are there for a reason, to protect players.

On scouting duty, watching Southampton vs Watford.

Bad timing as Watford just scored their second against run of play. At 66 min Southampton have been toothless up front and they have a close contender for Hennessey in goal. The first half started well for Watford who looked very bright with Chalbah looking as good as I have seen him. Reenergised and very mobile/confident. They are a big (huge) and very capable side. As the game progressed Saints have slowly come into the game but breaks down in the area. Watford steal the second he with a thumping shot from miles out that Henn errrm Forster couldn't reach. Watford seemed to lose their movement completely at HT and looked like they might let Saints back until that goal.

Cholevas looks a bit crazy and a red card waiting to happen. Expect Southampton to sit deep and hit us on the break next week. Keeper is an obvious weakness, toothless up front but Ward-Prowse a real threat with FKs.

Just seen MOTD of the Sane dismissal and although the majority won't like this, I think the sending off is harsh. Don't get me wrong, I know what the rules state. However, there are cynically dangerous tackles that put players' careers at risk which get punished with a yellow week in, week out (ask Wilf). In this instance, it is a case of two players competing for the ball - Mane has tried to nick it and the keeper has tried to head it. If the rule book was sensible, it would be a yellow.

I agree, Sane definitely doesn't deserve a red card :D

Sorry, but you are wrong. Mane, at speed raises his boot to head height level with his studs showing. It's the equivalent to driving through a red light at a busy intersection at 50mph in a truck.

The intent might not be there but it was stupid, reckless and by the LAWBOOK dangerous.

It is a clear cut 100% red card and should be.

The City keeper is a lucky boy tonight, could have been seriously hurt. Could have blinded him, ended his career or in a worse case scenario could have killed him (yes seriously)

If you re-read my post, I did not dispute the fact that this law meant that the sending off was inevitable.
My point is that football is a contact sport and although sometimes the contact can be pretty fierce, the emphasis in determining a dismissal should be on intent. Your final paragraph shows our difference of opinion since you have highlighted extremely unlikely worst case scenarios which could occur at any other time in this sport, without intent -a ball hit into a player's face at very close range, for example. I've seen the latter happen at first hand with the resultant concussion and teeth loss. Mane could have attempted to head that ball which could have resulted in a head clash of sufficient force to put two people in the hospital - but that would be ok because the laws of the game permit it? So as I said previously, my opinion is that the law is too sever in it's punishment and a yellow card would suffice.

P.S. Mane did not lead with his studs. Your studs "show" whenever your foot leaves the floor. It is a statement which is often used incorrectly to justify intent where none is present.

Intent is subjective. Referees are inconsistent enough as it is without having to try to determine whether or not there is intent.

The key issue is safety. Was a player reckless as to the safety of another player? Undeniably yes. Clear red card.

If it was palace involved, absolutely no way would anyone be saying it was a yellow. A player does that to Hennessey we say clear red card.

I see your point but once he catches the keeper and doesn't get the ball, it has to be a red.

A forward will always go for it - if he's a bit earlier he wins the ball and has a free run on goal. If the defender wipes out the forward, you'd expect a red there as well.

from the original camera angle it didn't look too dangerous at all and it didn't even look like he connected with the keeper , but the ref was the other side and had a clear view of it and its rightly a red, could have done some very serious damage to the keeper indeed.

I read your post clearly enough, in order to have made contact with his head he would have literally had to propel his entire body head first at the same speed. Had he done so in that manner it would have also been a red card offence as indeed it would have still been dangerous.

The fact Manes boot was that high, to make contact with the face of a goalkeeper means he has committed an action that is dangerous. Again if you are driving a vehicle dangerously do you think you would get away without being punished because you are not trying deliberately to get into an accident? Of course not. The jist is you shouldn't do it. Mane might have "thought" he could get the ball but he should never have gone in the way he did. Even if he had got there and people seem to miss this point, he would (or should) have been punished anyway as it doesn't change how dangerous it was. The laws don't say if you win the ball all is forgiven, a common misconception - if you commit a dangerous action it is punished.

I don't think we are going to agree on this tbh, but it worries me that some seem to think in a game of football it is acceptable for a player to endanger the safety of a player such simply because he might be able to go and score. It is not acceptable, it might be a contact sport but it is a sport at the end of the day. Contact does not stretch to a head high tackle at speed!

There is a major difference between a player kicking a ball and it hitting someone in the face (without intent) and someone making a decision to go in with his boot at a dangerous height. In fact the use of the word intent here is a funny one, as although I dint believe he intended to hurt the player, he made a decision and had the intent to go in for that challenge with his boot to win the ball at that height.
