08-10-2017, 03:08 PM
The final round of qualifying matches. Kick off 17:00 and as always live on ITV.

Quite a few changes for England including debuts for Maguire and Winks. Alli is back from suspension.

Lithuania: Setkus, Andriuskevicius, Klimavicius, Girdvainis, Borovskij, Zulpa, Slivka, Verbickas, Cernych, Novikovas, Sernas
England: Butland, Keane, Stones, Maguire, Walker, Henderson, Winks, Cresswell, Alli, Rashford, Kane

Other matches:
Slovenia v Scotland (Sky Sports Football)
Slovakia v Malta

England already qualified.
Scotland will make the play offs with a win. Slovakia will come 2nd if they win and Scotland don't.
Slovenia could finish 2nd but it's unlikely.

Can we not find anyone better than Henderson, he really offers nothing. Not seen anything of Winks so don't have any idea of whether he can provide any creative spark but I doubt it. At least Lallana is safe in the knowledge he's an obvious starter when we get to Russia.

Tiny stadium for a city of over half a million.

Basketball is the national sport. Main stadium for the leading basketball team in Vilnius holds 11,000.

Having watched football on Lithuanian TV while staying there we could learn something from their broadcasting - there's usually the option of watching the match with no commentators.

As a regular at Gander green lane as well as Selhurst Park I have to say these 3G pitches are the way forward.

Should now be allowed up to the Championship at least in my opinion.

Not much of a cutting edge in this first half. Too many ‘safe’ backward passes. You can get a non league player to do that. We need a bit more invention & bravery to try things in the final third. Lacking in entertainment so far:S:

It does seem strange to me that an England game can happen on it but not in League 2.

It's worked well at Bromley this season and when I went to Maidstone on Tuesday.

They're now really good pitches and actually encourage slick, passing football. The bounce is true, the value to the community is exceptional and if you can play football you can excel on these surfaces.

As an aside Bromley need to water their pitch more thoroughly. Was chatting to a mate of mine who is a director at Bromley and he agrees. There is an issue with the water mains and when that's sorted the pitch at Hayes Lane will be excellent.

I think everyone's still reeling from the QPR, Luton, Oldham, Preston 80's plastic pitches. How did they get away with it? Clearly a scam to gain a massive advantage and the FA went along with it.

It beggars belief. Has been obvious for years England do not have anyone who can take on a player from a standing position. Guess whose stock and trade is doing just that!

Does worry me a little when I remember who the manager was that overlooked him. :(

Sadly Zaha's participation at the finals is by no means certain. Ivory Coast have made a bit of a meal of their qualifying group and it now boils down to the final game next month. They must beat Morocco at home to progress to the finals - Morocco are top of the group and only need to draw to clinch the spot.

The difference between a club understanding and a disjointed national team. Some of the players lose all their abilities when they put on an England shirt. Can't pass, can't control, can barely run.

The english national team are a reflectionof the state of english football. The english managers and coaches create pragmatic ,fear based, boring football, with very little flare, tecnique or creativity. We have similar problems at palace having had a long string of english journeyman managers and when the players are asked to do something different as they were under de boer they can't. Southgate said in an interview "we're going to play with 2 defensive midfielders in the qualifiers" . That kind of sums it up really.

Qualifying for the world cup is a bit of a joke really. They need to sort the ranking points system out so teams don't have to play 10 pointless qualifiers and also work a system that means we don't have 4 crappy European countries whilst Argentina could miss out.

A proposal along the lines of the following:

Winner and Runners up of previous WC - 2 Spaces
Winners and Runner up of Euros - 2 Spaces
Winners and Runners up of Copa America - 2 Spaces
Winners and Runners up of African Cup of Nations - 2 Spaces
Winner of Confederations Cup - 1 Space

Then each Continent is allotted a certain number of places based upon either ranking points and countries available to enter. Then have a 2 legged knockout stage with the higher ranking teams entering at a later stage like they do for the FA Cup.

To Qualify from Euros currently have 54 teams competing. Those who have won the group this time round automatically enter at a later stage.

Edit - Confusing myself now I don't see how it is fair that Northern Ireland will qualify yet Argentina probably wont, primarily due to the strength of the South America qualifying group

Not saying the general point isn't right, but specifically with Argentina. Have you watched any of their matches? Entirely reliant on one players, who has been injured a lot this campaign. Dire football. Adler has made the same point, seriously doubt they would have done better in some of the Euro groups.

Argentina massively over rated. Only reason Messi came out of retirement was because Ronaldo won the Euros.

I would like to see England get into a group where we are tested, if we don't qualify we don't deserve it. To the outsider, the table looks brilliant but feck what dross we have played and had to play. We are a gnats cock just above the dross, I cannot see anything different happening from the last two world cup tournaments when we have to play real teams and not the 2nd division in qualifying.

The manager is a nice bloke but a boring yes man. The players are devoid of on-pitch expression and personality. The players mumble the national anthem and look bored. The ITV coverage is grey, with a grey theme tune, grey pundits and grey commentators. The qualifying is long and tedious and easy. Home matches are sterile and stifling. Away matches are populated by FLA-type lads obsessed by WW2 and the IRA.

In other words, it's ******* shit.
