I happened upon this album in HMV yesterday, going for a bargain £4.99. I remembered that I had heard some good things about it, so I splashed out.

I would say that it is now probably my favourite album of all time, and Movin' on Up is an absolute classic.

I would heartily recommend it to all.

Bought it when it first came out, around 1992!

Still put it on occasionally.

Yeah I kinda feel gutted that I havent purchased it previously.

Its the perfect fusion between Rock and Dance.

Yes a classic, one of those great drug induced records that is really all over the place. Even more impressive when you consider Gillespie's vocals have little range.

But did you buy it?

Seriously, I bought it recently too and it is good.

Have a look around for the vocal edit of Come Together (with Gillespie singing on it). It's superb.

Not sure what's happenend to them now, Vanishing Point had some good bits, can't say I've played Xterminator much and not sure about getting the new album. Anyone got it?

Everyone's agreeing with Jaffa. Is this a wind up?

:D

It's a very good album. I too have had it for years PK, and probably due to over listening don't play it as much as I used to. Mind you on the rare occasions I'm DJing these days I usually throw in a bit of Higher Than The Sun.

It's worth remembering that Screamadelica owes it's sound in no small part to Andy Weatherall who is virtually in the band, and produced/mixed and co-wrote loads of their earlier stuff.

Good point. If anyone's heard 'Sonic Flower Groove' (the album before they started taking pills and got Weatherall in) they'll know how important the producer was.

It's okay. Xtrmntr mark two really. Maybe a grower? Terrible version of Some Velvet Morning, but it does fit in with the rest of the album (if that make any sense).

I think the new album is an improvement on Xtrmatr - much less "angry" and more balanced. I feel claustraphobic when I listent to Xtrmatr, whereas the new album is more "open".

Not sure where these adjectives come from, but I hope they convey the general gist...

Matty,

I think you have missed the point. We are watching young Jaffa grow up, and perhaps (a big perhaps ) discovering that there is more to life than trying to impress people by telling them how much they have drunk , or what boisterous fun can be had with the rugger club ( I hope I haven't pulled the healing scab off the wah wah wooey wound), or even the cris de coeur of telling eveybody who reads this bulletin board what an inadequate feckwit you are.

Hopefully one day he will be as a well rounded human being as his current physique.

In the meantime, Primal Scream ( therapy??) is a start ....

Didn't miss the point Pidster. Just needling.

;)

It's good how these boards can become a place to nurture, guide and educate the yoof of today...I might start a thread on iconoclastic figures of popular culture through the last fifty years...Jaffa go out and read a book called England Is Mine by Michael Bracewell.

Blimey Baloo..I have to disagree with you. I wasn't impressed with Evil Heat at all. It's just too over produced and messy although Ms Lucifer is class and tempted me to buy it.

I am proud to own the Screamadelica EP CD and will one day put it up for sale on E-Bay with the Kangaroo Scrotum bottle opener that I intend to bid on.

I assume you are talking about the cover which features one of the least talented teevee performers of all time. It reminds me of one of my favourites, which was after Jeremy "Brown Hat" Thorpe got off his trial , where his wife had a balloon coming out of her head saying "You lucky sod" and the one out of his said "b*ggers can't be losers".

what turned screamadelica from a good album to an essential must have is the sprinkling of andrew weatherall's magic dust. andrew weatherall is a poineer in dance music and one of the best DJs ever.

if you like dirty electronic music , then i must recommend

www.groovetech.com

click on broadcasts, then archives, then search for andrew weatherall and enjoy 10 or so 2 hour sets from the man himself. sheer class:p

I'm going to spoil the party... I bought Screamadelica a couple of years ago, and disliked it so much, I took it back and got a refund. 'Movin' On Up' is a true classic, but 'Loaded' wears a bit thin after a while (presumably I was used to a radio edit). I can't remember anything else on it of note - my overriding memory was a few good tunes spoilt by far too much dancey-dancey mixy-mixy noise.

At the risk of being laughed out of court, I think Give Out But Don't Give Up is far superior - carries on where 'Movin' On Up' left off. All right, so it's the long-lost brother of Exile on Main Street, but if you're going to copy someone, you can't go far wrong with early-'70s Stones.

Jaffa, if Screamadelica is your favourite album of all time, then I suggest you start up another thread asking for advice.

He doesn't actually have bad taste - in fact I will go further and say he has good taste - he's just never heard 99% of the great records in the world.

I bought it for £5.99 over the summer, having never heard any of it before. I thought it was OK and I actually listended to it yesterday for only about the 3rd time, I've already got a few favourite tracks on it. Still went to see Idlewild and Doves at V2002 instread of them though.

Their name, and the name of the album, seem to be intentionally misleading, I always steered clear on the basis of "they must be some kind of grungey howling primeval sounding band, better steer clear of that".

It does amaze me that you can consider it your all time favourite album after only 24 hours.

Strangely, it doesn't amaze me.

Loaded is still one of my all time favourites, I'm another with the cd single and album from first time around and still play Screamadelica regularly.

Primal Scream are still awsome live, saw them last year and have tickets for this year at The Academy with support from brmc, should be a good night out.

Primal Scream doing the Screamadelica thing live at Glastonbury 1992 was pretty magical maaaaan... but then that 'get yer rocks off honey' stuff afterwards was crap and they were caca at Brixton Academy and I gave up.

I disagree, Get your rocks off is great fun in a Stones sort of way, maybe not seminal in way that Screamadelica was but it's hard to move on up from there.

As for the newer stuff like Vanishing point and Exterminator, it's got its place.

I was just hoping they were going to carry on with the psychedelic rock and dance fusion thing because they seemed to have got it just right.

Well I can't even properly pass judgement on an album after the first listen, I have to listen to it at least 3-4 times, so that I know some of the songs quite well, before I can even decide if I like it or not. For it to be my all time favourite album I'd have to know every track really well which I think takes weeks.
