Ok. But I do recall I've come in for a lot of abuse and grief for one or two previous questions. Any aggro this time and I'm sending the boys around. :)
A two part question:
1. As is known, Palace won the Youth Cup in successive years in the seventies. Name the four players who played in the second success who did not appear in the first one.
(This is pretty easy for someone to find, so let's see how we get on without anyone looking up the answer in a book).
2. Which player, who appeared in both matches, created history before joining Palace
big bad John

Number 2 should be Steve Mckenzie ?? Most expensive teenager.
Mumber 1 no idea but I'll throw Vince Hillaire into the hat as a guess for one of them.
Wasn't Kenny Sansom eligible for those matches although he was an established first teamer ?

Couldn't do No 1 without looking it up, but No 2 is David Fry - youngest player ever in the FA Cup (aged 15 for Weymouth?)

Spot on. Well done :p
I'll give you clues for the four players for the first part:-
1. A full back who was electric when he got going
2. Another full back who had the same surname as a much older Eagle's star.
3. Midfielder. Get - - - - - -
4. Another midfielder who went on to be another record breaker, and he scored in a Cup Final.

Like Caswell the year before, it was the last game of the season. I know we won big 4 or 5 nil and I think it was against Blackpool.
By the way Pete, when he played for Weymouth against Gillingham, Weymouth also had a player who scored the winning goal in an F.A Cup final playing for them. Any idea?

I can only offer a guess at a third of the question and thats who we played and I'm not certain about that! West Ham? Although I think that could have been the folowing season or even the one after that. If its any consolation I'm pretty certain the 'programme' was an A4 sheet in a nice Salmon colour. For some reason I seem to remember a friendly against Bournemouth at Selhurst, though like my sex life I believe this to be a figment of my imagination!

I think what ADE was trying to explain was that we don't normally ask a new question until the current question has been correctly answered. (That's why we sometimes go years between questions :D ) He wasn't trying to force you to answer the question yourself if you aren't sure of the answer.

If we had of played them, then you point would have been valid. A creditable 1-1 draw in the FA cup, the following season, with that luminaire Andy McCullogh scoring for us.I remember that game well.

Barnsley. If correct then an assist must go to the one and only Baldy who has just been carried on to a flight at JFK airport destined for Gatwick and no doubt hundreds of awaiting groupies. I was thinking along the lines of Charlton, Wimbledon but despite numerous bottles of vodka in his system Baldy broke the code and implied it was a last away and first away. So blue peter badges all around.

Ah, Bobby Houghton. I remember him taking Malmo to the European Cup Final, against Nottingham Forest - unimaginable in today's football where you have to have trillions to be succesful in Europe. Even then, it was quite an amazing achievement.
On the strength of it, he did eventually get offered a job in England, at Bristol City as I recall. He was sacked after a short time, having spent the entire time living in a hotel, and I recall that Bristol City were then presented with the biggest bar bill anyone had ever seen!
Can't recall exactly what happened to him after that, but I vaguely remember he ended up somewhere in Asia.

That is the correct answer. I know we won both games but the thing that really sticks in my mind is how Trevor Aylott, who had been on loan at Barnsley, had probably his best ever game for us in the game at the end of the season.

Name 5 players who played in the Football League last season who had a relative who played a first team game for Palace at some time in their career. ( doesn't have to be last season for the Palace players)
Also name the 5 Palace or ex Palace and name the connection. e.g brother , sister.

Yes, Elwiss that is the answer.
Perhaps you would care to humour me with specifics of songs sung about Dowie in the 19 appearances he made for us ? I'm not trying to be a smart arse either.
If so, moverman and I stand corrected.
Anyway, next question.
Which International team i.e other than England, would Peter Taylor have been eligible to play for after he made his debut for England ?
By all accounts, they made extensive yet very discreet enquiries as to his availibilty ?

Sorry. I didnt mean to sound sniffy but you cant be 100% certain that your answers correct either can you. Youre probably right, but Dowie was a widely held figure of ridicule in football before he joined us. Eagle Eye had a whole back page cut out mask at his expense before he joined so I reckon theres a reasonable chance that there were a couple of songs sung at him when he played against us. Maybe not the whole crowd in a massed chorus but an audible chant anyway.
Of course I cant name specific times or dates or whatever anymore than you can categorically swear that it didnt happen and he was just the first alternative that came to mind.
Its like asking, who was the player that Palace fans sung "Theres only one..." for. Youve got absolutely no way of being certain that your answers correct. Thats all I meant.

It's one of these four.
1. Someone who would develop a Five Year Plan where Juventus would feed us players, without telling Juventus.
2. Someone who would buy the ground from the club for next to nothing, put it in a holding company under his family's name, and make a fortune.
3. Someone who would promise to keep the beer prices cheaper than all the local pubs, but then start charging extortionate prices
4. Someone who had regularly bought lots of tickets for Cup Finals held at the ground.
I can't imagine any Chairman doing the things in 1, 2 or 3. So it must be 4.

You're right again, Bobby Bell was at Ipswich for a while when he got transferred to Blackburn. He only stayed there a couple of weeks when Bert Head brought him to Palace. He fell out of favour (what was all that about-loss of form maybe?) and was loaned out to Norwich.

i think he was from the Cambridge area and started his career with Spurs.he was not in Blyth's class as a player, not even close.
Blyth was a strange bloke.he lived in Dixon Road near the ground at one point, with the Chatterton family.Nick was a player and Len was the groundsman as i'm sure you know.
i remember one Friday morning while kicking about on the pitch waiting for the Saturday teams to go up on the board in the dressing room.a lad from Blackburn called Phil Hammond (no relation to Paul) hit a ball which struck Mel on the head - a complete fluke/accident.Blyth walked over and punched him.

Yep - Palace were playing at Liverpool in the League that day.
Here's the full list - with the aid of a reference book -
Stoke 3 Everton 2 FA Cup 3rd/4th Place Play Off 1971
Orient 0 Portsmouth 2 FA Cup replay 1974
England U23 3 Czechoslovakia 1 1974
Wimbledon 0 Leeds 1 FA Cup replay 1975
England U23 2 Portugal 0 1975
Croydon 1 Millwall 1 FA Cup 2nd Round 1979
I don't think there were any non-league finals played at Selhurst Park (unless you include schools matches, which sometimes happened) so the
Walton & Hersham game you thought of is probably when Palace beat them 4-0 at SP in the 1st Round on the 1975/76 Cup Run.
The records show that Enfield beat Walthamstow 1-0 in 1967 and Sutton drew 0-0 with Leytonstone in 1968 in the old FA Amateur Cup Semi Finals.

The gate at Selhurst Park was 9,911 - bearing in mind many of us were at Liverpool - it would have been 9,920 easily as as some of us used to watch Croydon too!
Funnily enough, the replay at the old Den was watched by 4,863 - so you can draw conclusions as to just how many Palace fans were at the first match - the Rodneys never really got more than 5,000 at most home games back then!

SP would seem a pretty likely location and I'm sure Altonwood were keen to obtain the fee for the use of the ground.
Def Selhurst I have the programme somewhere - even Rothmans doesn't confirm where it was played though.

Ah December 1979 Liverpool away , wasn't it meant to signify that Venables' (:hmph: ) young Eagles had arrived ? :( We duly out played and lost 3-0.

I was there, it was definitely played at Selhurst, because I was in with the Gills fans on the Holmesdale! In fact, I saw their home-play off semi with Sunderland (whom Gillingham beat at Roker, RELEGATING Sunderland to Division Three! - Swindlehurst played for the Mackems)
and also the 1st leg of the Final Gillingham v Swindon at the Priestfield - don't worry - I'm not a closet Pikey though!

Here's one of a similar ilk.
what away games have Palace played at Selhurst....(apart from the obvious wimbledon and Charlton fixtures).
so list reads
Charlton seasons xx - xx
Wimbledon seasons xx - xx
I went to one fixture in the 70's........where we won 4-0.
Name it....and any others?

It was perhaps the game where the team of the 80's actually started to doubt themselves. Palace got another spanking, 4-1 at Southampton earlier on and also lost 3-1 over at Everton - but apart from that, we had some very good results and were sitting as high as 3rd in the League, if I remember right - after Anfield - I don't think we really got ticking again.

Actually I thought that was a "proper" home game, but can't remember.
Stats do infer a home game..... - 1975/1976 Sat 22 Nov Crystal Palace 1 - 0 Walton & H. F.A. Cup.
I was thinking of this one the following year....which was played at Selhurst. Enfield 0 - 4 Crystal Palace 1976/1977 (FAC 2nd round). IO remember going and being suprised how packed the holmesdale was. I think that there may have been some other London league games off that day.

On another thread, Ian King confirmed that Enfield were technically the home team for that tie. In fact I can remember that we wore red & blue stripes because we were the 'away' team and Enfield wore white.
Apparently the venue was only switched a few days before the match. The infamous 2nd Replay between Palace & Brighton at Stamford Bridge was only played on the Monday of that week, so presumably Enfield thought that they'd be able to host the match if the opposition turned out to be Brighton.

Malcolm McDonald had a trial at Palace, before he joined Fulham, so I don't think he counts, does he?
Clive Allen scored for QPR in the 1982 Semi for QPR and also for Spurs in the 1987 Semi.

Mark Bright scored in 2 different FA Cup semis; once for us against Liverpool obviously and then another for Sheffield Wednesday against Sheffield United 3 years later.
The wording of the question sounds like you're looking for somebody that scored twice in the same match so that's probably not the answer you're looking for. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Bright's the last ex-Palace player to score in an FA Cup Semi (excluding the players who were actually playing for Palace in 1995).

If it's a trick question - I'm going for John Hughes getting two, helped by Willie Wallace in the Celtic v Clyde Scots FA Cup Semi in 1967.

Guessing here, but I can't recall Ventola starting a game, but he scored that goal against Southampton.
I remember Denis Bailey scoring a goal. He came on a few times as a sub, but I can't remember if he actually ever started any games - it would be very few if he did. Is he one of them?

Sorry, I was a bit vague - Wallace was only a reserve to start with - but became a Palace first team regular after only a few weeks - scoring 9 League goals in 51 appearances over his two seasons at the Palace.

These are wild guesses again.
I remember the tiny Steve Galloway once scoring a cracking goal for us, but I'm not sure if it was a a sub, or if he ever started any games.
The other that springs to mind is Steve Kabba. I can't recall him actually starting a fame, although he might well have done.
Are either of those correct?

Galloway did start a couple of games, including the one he scored in. He wasn't tiny, though, Ian - 6ft according to Rothman's. The tiny one you're thinking of might have been Steve Galliers, whose talent was about as great as his height!
Kabba may be a good shout though.

A final guess,
From the 2nd category, Jeroen Boere, can't have played many games, scored a back post header away to Southend or somewhere, did he start a match? he came on as sub a number of times to everyones intense depression. May well have started one somewhere.

No, PK, he used to run the Duke of Gloucester on Sydenham Road. My mum worked for him for a while.
The Ref and Whistle opening night was attended by big Mal and some players but the owner/manager was not connected to the club.
