That was the answer I was looking for. I stand to be corrected but I was sure Charlton played against Palace for Preston in our first home match on a sunday. He became a director of Wigan Athletic ( then a non-league team) and managed them for four matches.

I remember Bobby Charlton playing for Preston when we won 1-0 24 Sep 1974 which was a Tuesday. He retired after leaving Man Utd end of 72-73. Had a season off and started playing again after Preston's relegation 73-74. It is in his book My Manchester United years.

I remember him turning out for Preston too (although not a specific match against us). He actually appeared 38 times for them, and scored 8 goals - not a bad record for a midfielder and a retiree!

Ian, I know Charlton played about 40 times for Preston and that was his first season in charge. Are you certain he never played at Selhurst?
The question stated playing at Selhurst Park on a Sunday.
Bobby Charlton was not in the Preston team on Sunday 3rd February 1974 but he was mnanager at the time.
Preston team 3rd Feb 1974.
Brown, McMahon, Snookes, Sadler, Baxter, Bird, Lamb, Hawkins, Holden Burns, Treacy. Sub Kershaw
According to the PFA Players Records 1946-2005, it seems Bobby Charlton
initially gave up playing when he left United but following Preston's relegation in May 1974 he then played 38 League games for them in Division Three in 1974-75. He was in the Preston team at Selhurst Park on Tuesday 24th September 1974 (Palace won 1-0 - Mick Hill)

Presumably you mean the 3-0 win at home on Sat 18th Sept 1999. None of Palace's team that afternoon was making their debut. Chris Sharpling made his first and only start but his debut was as a substitute at Sheffield United 2 weeks earlier.
Presumably that's who you mean. Is he on the coaching staff now ? I had no idea.

Really ? "My first palace game was against Grimsby" If the answer was a player playing for Grimsby then the question's poorly worded at best and deliberately misleading at worst.
Edit: It definitely wasn't Danny Butterfield's debut either; it might very well have been the first time that he'd played against Palace but I can't believe that the question setter seriously intended us to identify a player who was making his first appearance in a match involving Palace.
The answer has to be Sharpling. He might be a scout or a youth team coach or something now. Does anybody know ?

Think you have mis understood the question , Lewisham Eagle is saying that it was his first game at Palace, not that the player was making his debut. Which brings us back to Danny Butts, unless Clinton has resigned and it's a well kept secret :D

Maybe I'm being really thick here but the question was ...
"My first palace game was against Grimsby in september 1999 who was the only player who played in the game at palace now?"
I agree that "the only player who played in the game at palace now" could mean Danny Butterfield. But in that case, the clue "My first palace game was against Grimsby in september 1999" is wrong. Butterfield had played against Palace the previous season and anyway, if he meant a non-Palace player, I can't believe anybody would disagree that the wording of the question is totally misleading.
Not that it really matters or anything. :) I still reckon that the answer that he's looking for is Chris Sharpling.

Tambling played three games on loan for Palace in January 1970, he was recovering from a cartilege op earlier in the season The first of these was at West Brom on Jan 10th and I seem to recall that WBA accused Palace of abusing the then new(ish) loan system which WBA thought was meant to be for clubs loaning players to one of a lower Division.
Then loans I think were for a maximum of three games and Tambling definitely returned to Chelsea.

No, he was initially on a 3 month loan because of concerns over a hip injury, it was made permanent immediately after.

Sorry, I had to look up the Tambling situation.

Yes, he's the one I said was debatable. He came to Palace on a season's loan. At the end of that loan he returned to Benfica. He remained a Benfica player for a few weeks until we decided to buy him, albeit was the close season. Technically, therefore, he does count. But it is a debatable one.

Mickey Droy (1984-87)
Giant centre-half Micky, was signed from Chelsea, after a loan spell at Luton, in 1984 by Steve Coppell. He made 263 appearances for Chelsea and was a revelation at the back for Palace at the ripe old age of 33.
He formed a formidable defensive partnership with Jim Cannon before moving to Brentford on a free transfer, where he finished his career. He made a total of 58 appearances, scoring seven goals.
Mickey, 49, is retiring to Florida with his wife and son, after selling up his electrical business.

Only time ever Palace players have scored whilst opposing each other for international sides
First bit is partly wrong. Rubins scored previously for Latvia as a Palace player. Although, it is to do with Dougie's goal.
Second is possible but not the answer I'm looking for.

First Palace players to score for Scotland and Latvia respectively
Only time ever Palace players have scored whilst opposing each other for international sides
You're right and I truly did not think these questions through because again it was not the answer I had in mind. I do apologise :sob:

Right as I have clearly effed this up I will put you out of MY misery.
Missing answers in my less than perfect quiz are:-
5 - 3 players in same match Murphy for Eire - Nicholas & Walsh for Wales
9 - 4 players playing on same day
Gray & Thomas - England, Bodin & Young - Wales
11 5 players appearing on same day Forsell Finland, Fuller Jamacia, Kolinko & Rubins Latvia Berthaler USA
12 Something that I doubt will happen again for a long time 7 players appeared for their countries
Morrison, Riihilahti Kolinko Rubins Freedman, Berthalter,Kirovski
Once again apologies a lot of the "wrong" answers were better than my "right" answers, well done to all of you, especially Super Mab

I dont believe he did
If he didn't, then my source (the club website) is wrong.
He scored on 05/07/01 v Lithuania.

Good question. I'm gonna give the answer to mine as I have a plane to catch and won't be back until next week.
The two firsts I was looking for -
1) First Scottish goalscorer.
2) First (and I believe only) time that a current Palace player has scored an international goal past a current Palace player.
Freedman and Kolinko.
