There's a fair chance that, at about 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, something will happen which has not happened before in 106 years.

The ground will only contain away fans, as we will be about 4 down, which with the added dis-appointment that our new unique kit is a copy of 6 other teams kit from a few years ago, will have caused all the Palace fans to bugger off home .

If we win 4-0, 5-1, 6-2, etc, we'll finish the season with our goals-scored/goals-conceded equal. ie a goal difference of zero ?

BUT ... you did say "a fair chance". I doubt whether even the most blindly optimistic Palace fan thinks that there's a fair chance of us winning by 4 goals on Saturday so I'm struggling ...

This hardy perennial thread is one of my favourites and it appears to be in danger of slipping out of sight so I thought I'd better give it some attention to bring it back to life. Since it's emergency treatment it's a pretty mundane question so I'm going to have to ban any googling to look up the answers and insist on memory/guesswork. Anyway ...

In our last Premiership season (2004/04) who were the 4 ex-Palace players that scored against us and in which matches?

Ian Hart
21-06-2012, 10:24 PM
Well done for rejuvinating the thread Elwis.

You've asked for an answer without research. I wouldn't know how to look up opponents goals anyway, so these answers are simply from memory and are probably all wrong!

In that early game at home to Everton, where were in the lead until Speroni got tackled as he tried to dribble out of the area, I'm pretty sure I recall Marcus Bent scoring one of the goals that day.

Then shortly after that I recall a televised game against Portsmouth which we lost. I have a recollection that Fuller scored a very early goal in that game.

The other game that I remembered was that match near the end of the season against relegation rivals Norwich which I think ended 2-2 or maybe even 3-3. I could be miles out here, but I do recall Leon McKenzie scoring against us sometime, and it could have been in that game.

Despite much brain racking, I can't even come up with a guess for a fourth one.

NEXT QUESTION

Keeping with the theme of opposition goal-scorers, in the past 20 seasons, i.e. starting from and including the 1992/93 season (the first season of The Premiership), 11 players have scored hat-tricks against Palace.

Can you name the player, who they were playing for and the result?

Only one was in the Premiership. One was in the FA Cup. All the others were in Division 1/The Championship/whatever they were calling the 2nd tier that season. Only one was scored at Selhurst Park. Palace lost all 11 matches. Enough clues ...

Tue,03-Nov-98, West Bromwich Albion [A] , L 2-3; Lee Hughes
Sat,05-Dec-98, Huddersfield Town [A] , L 0-4; Marcus Stewart
Sat,28-Aug-99, Huddersfield Town [A] , L 1-7; Clyde Wijnhard

Sat,30-Aug-08, Reading [A] , L 2-4; Kevin Doyle
Sat,01-Jan-11, Millwall [A] , L 0-3; Jason Puncheon
Sat,31-Mar-12, Nottingham Forest [H] , L 0-3; Radoslaw Majewski

I'm being lenient allowing "Marcus Stewart must have got one, probably for H'field, maybe in the 0-7?" but I suppose it's close enough.

ElwissAtMemphis
03-07-2012, 05:00 PM
Yes, we've mustered up the 2 missing ones above. Carl Asaba at Gillingham on Boxing Day 2000 and Chris Kiwomya for QPR on the infamous 0-6 defeat at Loftus Road on the last day of the 1998/99 season. A match that still gets Palace fans hot under the collar although the fact is, it's Bury fans that should feel more aggrieved about it than us.

The final list is ...

Tue,03-Nov-98, West Bromwich Albion [A] , L 2-3; Lee Hughes
Sat,05-Dec-98, Huddersfield Town [A] , L 0-4; Marcus Stewart
Sun,09-May-99, Queens Park Rangers [A] , L 0-6; Chris Kiwomya
Sat,28-Aug-99, Huddersfield Town [A] , L 1-7; Clyde Wijnhard
Tue,26-Dec-00, Gillingham [A] , L 1-4; Carl Asaba
Sat,01-Mar-03, Wolverhampton Wndrs [A] , L 0-4; Kenny Miller
Sat,03-Jan-04, Tottenham Hotspur [A] , L 0-3; Frederic Kanoute
Sat,03-Nov-04, Liverpool [A] , L 2-3; Milan Baros [2p]
Sat,30-Aug-08, Reading [A] , L 2-4; Kevin Doyle
Sat,01-Jan-11, Millwall [A] , L 0-3; Jason Puncheon
Sat,31-Mar-12, Nottingham Forest [H] , L 0-3; Radoslaw Majewski

Going even further back in time, Archiebald Leitch rightly remembers Niall Quinn scoring a hat-trick for Manchester City on Mon, 01-Apr-91 in a 1-3 defeat. That was almost exactly 21 years before Majewski's effort this season for Forest (just 1 day out)

Presumably those are the last 2 at Selhurst although I'm not certain. There was definitely one top-flight hat-trick between Quinn's and the start of the above 20 year period.

Anyone?

Ian Hart
03-07-2012, 09:23 PM
the fact is, it's Bury fans that should feel more aggrieved about it than us.

They do.

A good friend of mine is a Bury season ticket holder. They still hold a long-lasting grudge against us, all these years later.

Apparently Coppell appeared on their local TV a couple of days before the game, and promised that Palace would "give 100% effort in the match", something that, if we're honest, didn't happen.

Robert Fleck rings a bell but I can't be certain. Presumably you're thinking of the 3-4 defeat at Selhurst on Sat, 29-Feb-92. Or was it the 3-3 draw at Carrow Road earlier that season on Sat, 07-Dec-91? Can anybody confirm?

Sat, 19th-Jan-1991; Crystal Palace 1-3 Norwich City.

Robert Fleck got 2, but Norwich's other goal was scored by Jeremy Goss. Mark Bright got Palace's goal.

So does anybody know who Norwich's goalscorers were the following season (91/92) in the 3-3 draw at Carrow Road and 3-4 defeat at Selhurst?

Yeah, that's the one.

It surprised me when I came across the fact by chance a few days ago. I'd always assumed that he'd come through our youth team for some reason. It's possible that his last ever Southampton match was in the 79 League Cup Final against Nottingham Forest as a substitute, but it's impossible to be sure. That would have been a better question if it was true.

1979 was just about the worst winter in living memory and teams were constantly catching up with postponed fixtures, hence our blessed final match against Burnley that season. Southampton even had to play 2 FA Cup matches in the 4 days after The League Cup Final. Anyway ...

Mind you latter we did record one of our great results in the competition though its little talked about beating the mighty Leeds 2-1 at Selhurst I think might of been 1968.....they had beaten us in the FA Cup 3-0 after the Forest replay the previous season a game I remember listening to on the radio....but its a bit hazy the memory is getting worse

2.From those teams name the players who went on to manage an international side.

3. Name the Leeds players from that 68 team who also appeared against Palace in our famous cup win in 76.

Ruskin Old Boy

As outfield players went in goal to replace an injured keeper.

Remember Tony Millington being carried off at Coventry (not long after joining Palace), Whitehouse going in goal and there was Bill Glazier in goal for Coventry not long after he'd joined them from Palace for a record fee. No chance of Palace scoring then but a creditable goal less draw.

(Whitehouse also went in goal after John Smout was injured in his only ever appearance in goal for Palace, home to Cardiff the following season - also ended 0-0.)

First Palace match I remember being on the TV. Peter Lorenzo anyone.

Gosh, that's going back a bit. (Suppose I am :( )

The Coventry match was interesting for other reasons - Jimmy Hill was their manager so we directed a few chants in his direction but in hindsight what topped the lot was that the match day programme had a piece on Coventry's plans to install seating behind the goals. This was to reduce "hooliganism" at matches, Coventry claiming that trouble invariably broke out behind the goals. This was in 1964 way way ahead of any ideas on all seater stadia.

There's got to be a question inspired by today's match. In a surprisingly rare event, we saw a Palace player score a hat-trick this afternoon.

Sat, 22-Sep-12, H, D2, Cardiff City, 3-2, Glenn Murray

So lets see if we can list the previous 25. As a starting reference point, the first hat-trick of the previous 25 was ...

Sat, 30-Aug-75, H, D3, Colchester United, 3-2, Ian Evans

So that leaves 24 to get in-between. Let's be fair so no looking in The Complete Record.

Only Cagliari's Niccolai and Gori did not make the 13 players (11 + two subs) that appeared in that epic 4-1 defeat v Brazil in June 1970. Boninsegna scored Italy's goal, leveling the score at half time 1-1.

Looking through the records, Palace got to play 11 out of Italy's 22 strong Mexico 1970 World Cup Squad.

Only Cagliari's Niccolai and Gori did not make the 13 players (11 + two subs) that appeared in that epic 4-1 defeat v Brazil in June 1970. Boninsegna scored Italy's goal, leveling the score at half time 1-1.

Here are the Palace, Cagliari and Inter sides that played in the 1971 Anglo Italian Cup, less than a year later:

Their captain when they won the FA Amateur Cup in 62/63 was called Eddie Reynolds, which sounds like a villain from an episode of Minder. They beat Sutton United 4-2.

Supplementary question if that's correct; what record did he set in that match which still stands to this day.

tony 1947
13-01-2013, 07:58 AM
You are right to say that Eddie Reynolds played in that final and will see if anyone else knows the answer to your your other question but he was not the captain and I have no record of him playing for Palace.

(Should have added that Reynolds scored all 4.)

Roy Law is the correct answer. Well Done! Roy was a junior with Palace and broke his leg playing for the reserves in October 1953. He never played for us again. He played for many years for Wimbledon and was in the British Olympic team in 1960.

Well, while we're awaiting Alan's devious question, let me repeat one I asked in my weekly quiz on my Palace Radio show on Saturday. If you were listening, so heard the answer, can I ask you not to respond! We had lots of responses, but only one person got it right.

The All Time Record goalscorers for two premiership clubs are former Palace players. Can you name the two players.

Dorking .Eagle

Bobby Tambling (Chelsea) has to be one (been a lot of talk of Chelsea's all time goalscorers with Lampard catching up Kerry Dixon, who was No. 2 to Tambling)

other one more tricky. Until I think of anything better, I'll say Ian Wright for Arsenal (but Cliff Bastin or Thierry Henry might have more???)

Is the correct answer. And if you'd got it right during the show you'd have won yourself a £40 voucher for a local indian restaurant (plug!)

Bobby Tambling was obviously the easy one. Having said that, we had Mel Blyth on our show on Saturday, and i told him one of the answers was someone he had played alongside, but he still couldn't think who it might be.

The late Johnny Gavin was the tricky answer to find. He remains Norwich's all time top scorer with a pretty small total (for an all time record) of 132 goals - a record he set 55 years ago. After a brief spell at Watford he arrived at Palace in 1959, and stayed until 1961, during which time he scored 15 goals in 66 matches

There were 8 FA Cup matches at the weekend and Monday, and I reckon 11 players who have appeared for Palace, appeared in those games.

He was Alex Ferguson's assistant manager and Ferguson's first management role was in 1974 so he's hardly from a bygone era. He didn't play very many times for Palace if that isn't too much of a clue but he's a well-known individual.

Not guilty :D.

Remember him because Bert Head signed several players pre-season. Steve Kember was telling everyone down the Crown in Shirley that another new signing, Gerry Humphreys ex Everton, was the best crosser of the ball he'd seen. Of Provan he just shrugged. Humphreys played more than Provan (one appearance, away at Huddersfield) but found his level at Crewe.

I'm pretty sure that's right. He wanted to do evangelical duty in Ireland, but didn't know what club to choose, and I think it was Paddy Mulligan who suggested Cork

ElwissAtMemphis

Something to do with him being a Jehovah?

Apparently correct. WSC report that Brian Mears, the Chelsea chairman, noted that Tambling started having "religious upheavals" in 1966 and was soon "undergoing a spiritual change". This was during the era of Peter Osgood when Chelsea were supposedly the most fashionable team of the era. As his team-mates got more and more flamboyant, he became more and more insular.

The article reports that after a disappointing spell at Palace "the Jehovahs then sent him off to persuade the people of Cork to see the error of their Catholic ways". There must be a couple of people here that lived near to Selhurst in the early 70's. Did anybody get a knock on the door on a Sunday morning to find Palace's latest centre forward asking them to talk about Jesus? It's hard to imagine anything similar happening nowadays.

He still lives in Cork to this day so they didn't run him out of town. I don't know whether the proselytizing continued for long; he doesn't look in the best of health nowadays.

What have these players done twice that puts them in an exclusive club of Palace players and when (since 1969 anyway).
