Ade Akinbiyi must be one, he was the record buy for at least three clubs - Bristol City, Wolves and Leicester and David Hopkin another (Leeds to Bradford). Hermann had two record moves by the way, Palace to Brentford and Wimbledon to Ipswich

Just a small aside to my point about the number of players that have played for the club.

Unbeknown to me until last week, the list of players used in the past is not wholly accurate (as I have found out during the last several months !), as you may see if you carefully scrutinise the list of players that Palace printed in last year's yearbook (spot all the missing names).

Missing from any lists I've seen before are all the *GUEST* players that appeared during WW1 and WW2 whilst Palace were playing London league football.

A lot of players would only appear for a game or two, so as you can imagine the list can go on a bit (although we only used one or two per game, unlike Fulham who once fielded ten in one go !)

Am currently working on identifying them and adding them in, so expect the player count to swell by at least another 150 or so (at least) at a guess so far.

Would one be Steve Claridge (possibly by Cambridge) ?

It would. Cambridge United paid Luton Town £190K for him in November 1992 (just 4 months after selling him to them for £160K). I think I'm right in saying that he never played a full team game for Palace.

Phil O'Sophical got 2 of the others. David Hopkin's transfer from Leeds is Bradford's record signing at an incredible £2.5M. He was back at Selhurst just 8 months later and to say he didn't look like £2.5M worth of footballer would be something of an understatement. Still, a less incredible waste of money than the infamous Ade Akinbiyi who contrived to fool enough managers into making him the record signing of not one ... not two ... but 3 league clubs. That was £5M paid by Leicester to Wolves, £3M paid by Wolves to Bristol City and £1.2M paid by Bristol City to Gillingham (and he's only a few thousand short of being ours as well). Surely, never in the history of football has so much money been spent on a player with so little talent ... a quite extraordinary outbreak of delusional behaviour by several managers who should have known better. It's an enormous blot on Trevor Francis' transfer legacy at Palace which otherwise looks pretty good if you exclude Ade, although paying over £2M for him is completely inexcusable by anyone's standards.

Which leaves one ex-Palace player remaining who is the record signing for a league club. He only played a handful of games for us and did a lot better after he left us.

Actually he scored twice Alan, I was there when he equalised with his head for the reserves in a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge in April 1991 in the last minute.

Gilbert & Mabbutt were sent off at home to Middlesboro in Feb 84 Peter Nicholas then scored a penalty for a 1-0 Palace win. Malcolm Allison was manager of Boro then.

Right.
What was founded first, Crystal Palace Football Club or Crystal Palace Athletics Club.
Year, will do but if you really know your stuff the actual days are on record.

The London Man
23-11-2004, 09:33 PM
I'm not sure that there ever was a Crystal Palace Athletics Club. The original Crystal Palace FC is recorded as playing as early as 1861 on the Cricket Pitch at the bottom of Crystal Palace Park.

There used to be two huge "Basins" or ornamental lakes that were supplied with water by the two huge water towers that are commemorated on the Palace badge. These were too expensive to maintain and were filled in 1894.

The two sites became a Football Pitch (where the current Athletics track is) and a Cycle Track with pitch (where the current Indoor Sports Hall and Swimming Pool are).

The Cycle Track is the site where Athletics would have taken place and Palace used to play some matches on that pitch too.

20 FA Cup Finals were played on the "Southern" Exhibition Ground from 1895 to 1914 where the current Crystal Palace FC played from 1905. In reference to your question, Brixton Exile, the original title of our club was Crystal Palace Football & Athletic Club and this was the business name of CPFC right up until Ron Noades took over in 1981.

It's very probable that Athletics took place before 1905 at the Crystal Palace grounds as it had a cinder track reputed to be the fastest in London. The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre was opened in 1964 and in 1968 had Britain's first All Weather Athletics track laid.

Very interested to learn if there was an actual Crystal Palace Athletics Club.

Very probably Oxford United, when the "Kassam Stadium" was opened with Palace dawing 1-1 and losing theie Charity Cup on penalties.

Hilarious incident when Kolinko knocked out a Palace defender and an Oxford forward whilst trying to punch out an Oxford cross, resulting in Oxfords goal!

You are of course correct according to how I worded the question but that wasn't what I was thinking of. I meant that it was the first time that the opponents had played there as well as us.

(To be honest, this isn't a very well researched question. There could be other examples than the one I'm thinking of, but I'm pretty sure)

Hmm! Anyway I guess that makes it my question.

A slightly trick question that may or may not be hard 'cos I posted the answer on another thread some time ago.

In May 1968 Palace sent an Under 19 side to Holland to play in a youth tournament which they won.

The side included Steve Kember and a guest centre half who played in all the tournament games but never signed for Palace, and went on to become an England international.

Who was he?

Ruskin Old Boy

He signed for Fulham and scored against us that season. He'd been playing for Tonbridge, alongside one of my school mates, Jamie Reid, who went on to achieve fame in record cover design.

Blimey that didn't take long. Spot on!! He joined Fulham but only stayed a few months and then joined Luton where he became a prolific goal scorer. He was then bought by Newcastle where he really made his name (the Alan Shearer of his day) and then went on to Arsenal before injury finished his career

Biggest win by a non-league (Southern League) side over a Football League side. FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round Sat Nov 18 1905:
Palace 7 (SEVEN) Chelsea 1 (ONE).

Chelsea had a Football League Division Two fixture at Stamford Bridge that day and fielded a reserve team against Palace. This result made the FA stipulate that all teams should field their best 11 players in all Cup Ties, a rule which has only fallen by the wayside since the introduction of the Premiership.

What makes this result all the more ironic, is that Chelsea and Clapton Orient were admitted to the Football League at the start of that very season by a vote in the League's AGM. Palace failed to gain election in the same vote, missing out by one vote! We had to wait 15 years to gain election, along with the entire Southern League First Division in 1920.

A guess here, but I remember reading about Palace applying to switch their home replay with Birmingham City in 1915.

After drawing at St Andrews 2-2, going back again to Birmingham. I'm not sure if this is the first case of the FA allowing a tie to be switched to the other team's ground because of financial reasons.

Palace, who were still playing at the Cup Final ground at Crystal Palace, were getting gates of around 2,000, whilst there were over 17,000 at both ties in Birmingham.

The replay was lost 3-0 and Palace had to move to the cycle track at Herne Hill, where West Norwood FC used to play (the pitch and grandstand are still in use today) a couple of months later, when the Admiralty (Royal Navy) took over the Palace grounds.

Tell you what, there should have been a rule about playing in extreme fog!
If you thought Crewe at home last season was foggy, you should have been at Vale Park for an FA Cup replay about 10 years ago - we we sitting behind the goal, and you could not see the other end of the pitch!

Dorking .Eagle
07-12-2004, 09:49 AM
Could it be the rule about inciting opposition fans?
I remember reading something saying that in 76 the FA had to ban Malcolm Allison from walking round the pitch, taunting the away fans with his "prediction" of how many they would lose by!

So is that it? (If so it never stopped Sam Hamman winding up Leeds fans when Cardiff hosted them in the Cup)

Neil the Eagle

1990 FA Cup Final replay. Still a guess, but surely Les Sealey was "on loan" from Luton to Moan Utd, up to that point, I don't think loan players were allowed to play in "vital" end of season matches.

Neil the Eagle
07-12-2004, 10:34 AM
That's on the right lines, the FA actually closed the loophole the following season that allowed Les Sealey to play after his loan period had technically expired.

Palace didn't officially complain though, so I guess, with hindsight, its a bit tenuous to say that we directly influenced this.

Anything to do with Stevie Coppell being a former "Red"? Ironically, the next season, with Palace not gaining entry to the UEFA Cup, because of Liverpool's extended "Heysel" ban being lifted, I know Stevie did get as upset as the rest of us, but he is a lifelong "Red" of that team too!

Wasn't our 1990 Final the first one in which the FA allocated each team's number of ticket's according to their average home attendance, leaving us with something scandalous like 14,000 tickets. The rule still gets invoked from time-to-time (in other words if Manchester United are playing) because Millwall got stung by it last year, but not as badly as we were.

It happened for the Wimbledon V Liverpool Cup Final too, although I'm wonder if that's because Wimbledon knew didn't have a hope in hell of selling out and ceceeded blocks of tickets to Liverpool themselves.

Neil,

My understanding is the rule of pro-rata allocations for the average home attendance for the previous 3 seasons was introduced as a result of Wimbledon failing to sell their 25,000 allocation in 1988.

ElwissAtMemphis
07-12-2004, 03:28 PM
Yes, I thought that it was the apparent unfairness of Liverpool and Wimbledon getting the same allocation that caused the change of rules. The following season was the post-Hillsborough all-Merseyside final in which they made an exception by giving both clubs fans nearly all of the tickets instead of giving half of them to FA hangers-on so it fell on us to be the first team that got stitched up. That's how I remembered it anyway.

I remember Chelsea and West Ham giving us theirs. Not sure why West Ham did, but Chelsea's Ken Bates and Noadesy were allies, which explains why Chelsea gave us theirs.

I remember Noades (quite rightly) complaining about our 14,000 allocation to anyone who'd listen, but then was amazed about 2 years later to see that Palace's marketing dept were selling VIP coach trips to the FA Cup Final using the clubs own allocation, rather than give them to one of the competing sides.

I would guess, Neil, that your ticket for the 88 Final was one of Palace's allocation (every club that takes part in the FA Cup gets tickets, be it 2 per club for the tiny clubs, more for County FA's, up to several dozen for teams like Palace). I was amazed to learn that a colleague at work regualarly gets Cup Final tickets, because of some friend in non-league football, and he had the nerve to say that he found it most awkward now that the Final is in Cardiff each year.

In the 40's and 50's, there was a prize draw every season in the CPFC Supporters Club, to win the RIGHT to purchase a pair of Cup Final tickets, from the Clubs allocation. In those days, I guess most tickets would have been standing too.

OK Pete,only joking.
Why was the official opening of Selhurst Park delayed.

I don't think it was actually delayed.
Sure it wasn't ready for the start of 95-96 season, but when building first started (May 94) I'm sure it was estimated it would take 20 months to complete.

Which makes it 3-4 months ahead of schedule.

Without putting in the whole of A-Z i'll plump for a guess for Tottenham

I'll put you out of your misery by telling you it was Kensington, I wasn't actually implying anything sinister in it ;)

SP's opening was delayed due to building contractor's strikes, and several other things !

The club were originally expecting to have moved in at least a season earlier than they actually did.

It kind of warms my heart to know that things conspired against us even way back when...:)

Where did you get this information from?

Given that work only started a year earlier (May 94) surely you are implying that the club expected work to begin at least a year before this.

Fund raising for the work was still being discussed by Uncle Ron at a fans forum in January 94 in Crystals, which is where the 5 year season ticket was announced. It was also at this forum that Ron said it would take approx 20 months to complete.

Think wires are crossed here
ARussell is talking about the builders of the ground, i.e. in 1924, which was Humphries of Kensington. (it was designed by the prominent football stand designer Archiebald Lietch), and whilst the ground opened in 1924, it should have been ready some time earlier. Not talking about the opening of the Holmesdale Stand in 1995!

(To be honest, the Arthur Wait was apparently very rough and ready when the first game took place against Man Utd in 1969, and in August 95, when the Holmesdale opened (one game late) it was lacking a few basic facilities too, so nothing changes!

Anyway it was my question, as I answered correctly to the question as to why the opening of the ground was delayed.

My question is :-

Name the last defender to score a hat trick for Palace.

Who Cares?

Book just published by English Heritage all about Archibald Leltch entitled "Engineering Archie". Leitch apparently had a hand in over 30 Football Grounds inc. Selhurst Park. Bad weather was also given as a reason as well as the strike and only twelve steps of terracing had been completed by opening day. Leitch wined and dined the press before taking them on a conducted tour of SP 7 days before opening.

HUMPHREYS (note spelling) were based in Knightsbridge (see page 42 of this book) -

Last Palace defender hat-trick - Dean Gordon's included 2 penalties.

Before him Ian Evans in August 1975 all from open play.

Groundtastic did a two (or was it three) part feature on grounds designed by Leitch a couple of years back Ian.

Very interesting it was as well, included a lot of pictures of old grounds no longer with us, and shots of the stands that he's had a hand in.

Here's a nasty one for you.

Alphabetically from A-Z in terms of Palace players who've appeared for the first team, who comes first (and last) ?

Itzik Zohar has got to be the last.

Albert Addinal for the first (of course, I had to look that one up.)
