It was a rubbish question anyway - there were several at least equally valid answers offered up.

OK - I've got one.

I've got another question along the same lines as arussell's.

What was unusual about last saturday's game with PNE?

arussell

I won't answer that ;)

Re: the Madrid game, the photos don't look like red from the tone I have to say, however the report does say RED (not cardinal) and blue stripes and red shorts.

So I'm at a loss to explain why a (short sighted !?) reporter would say that ?

Maybe, and I'm being serious here, it was to do with the newspaper's leading - a word had to be shortened to fit the story into the space.

An old newspaper printer I used to know, reckons the type-setters would often change the odd word this without recourse to the sub-editors.

Because the grass had died and gone yellow.

Indeed - the chemicals they had put on the grass had worked two times as fast as it should have, due to the hot weather that week.

Queued all that night (after the POTY disco), for my Cup Final ticket.

Yeah, I swapped shirts with a Man City fan because he wanted to wear the Palace shirt around Manchester and taunt the Munich scum. I've still got his City shirt somewhere.

Here's a two part Jacko question.
Jackson made his F.A Cup debut around 1965. From then until his departure to Orient in 73 he only missed three F.A Cup ties. Who were the keepers who replaced him?
He made his League Cup debut in 64 and only missed two ties before heading East. Again who were the keepers who replaced him?

Sky blue with claret stripes? They were certainly light coloured with a thin dark stripe - there's a black and white picture in Roy Peskett's Crystal Palace Story of Johnny McNichol and the Real captain (Gento?) exchanging pennants before the game. Regrettably I wasn't there otherwise I'm sure I'd remember.

Peter, you're right on Hammond and Millington.Frank Parson's, Jacko's faithful back-up played about five games in the league one seaso, never in the cup. Used to feel sorry for him. Even in meaningless friendlies old Bert never gave him a run out.

Goalkeeper John Smout played for Palace at Cardiff on 4th Dec 1965 when Jackson was missing with bronchitis and Millington had a back injury. Smout was carried off after 54 mins and Brian Whitehouse went in goal with forward Keith Smith as substitute for Smout. Game ended 0-0

Whitehouse had been in goal before have replaced an injured Millington
against Coventry in November 1964. He did not concede a goal then

Almost right, Ian; it was at Selhurst, otherwise perfect. Also, it was featured on the ITV's Sunday afternoon football show (can't remember what it was called). Typical Palace, get on telly and end up 0-0.

Hope this question hasn't cropped up before. Name the ex Palace players who managed other professional football teams since 1970. Off my head I've come up with 19 but I'm sure their's more and I've probably missed out on one or two obvious ones. Instead of one person naming them all, try three apiece for a while. Just name one team they managed.

as long as they got paid for managing. So if Redfern and Thompson are correct which I'm sure they are, then we're up to 21, with still 6 definites to go. Of those six, only one managed a team in the lower divisions of the football league.

Question
Excluding the obvious case of the 1990 FA Cup Final, when and by which teams, have Palace been knocked out of the major cup competitions by the eventual winners in the past 30 years.

i.e. Since (and including) Southampton in the 1976 FA Cup. There's six more to get.

Neil the Eagle
07-12-2005, 12:34 AM
I've got six teams... (but i'm guessing you didn't want the Full Members Cup, so there's probably still two more to get)

QPR barstards 1982
Arsenal FA Cup 1998 & Lge Cup 1993
Liverpool League Cup 1995 & 2001
Nottm Forest Simod Cup 1989
Chelsea Zenith Cup 1990
Leicester whenever they won the League Cup, I remember we played them the following year and beat them when they were the holders. Radio Leicester's phone in was going bersek after the game. That must have been 2000 - Rubens wonder goal, so I think they won it in 1999. No, hang on we played 'em in a friendly that year... Oh I'm all confused.

Neil the Eagle
07-12-2005, 12:42 AM
Actually what the •••• am I talking about QPR didn't win the bloody cup that year, Spurs did.

Clearly past my bed time.

3 to get then.

Although you've said the last 30 years, I think they might be all relatively recent:

1990 Notts Forest - Littlewoods Cup
1993 Arsenal - Coca Cola Cup
1995 Liverpool - Coca Cola Cup
1998 Arsenal - FA Cup
2000 Leicester - Worthington Cup
2001 Liverpool - Worthington Cup

Neil & Ian, you've got 6 between you, but I miscounted and there's actually still one more to get. (Good effort, remembering about Simod/Zenith campaigns although personally I'd expunge it from the recordbooks)

1976; FA: Southampton (Semi)
1990; LC: Nottingham Forest (3rd R)
1993; LC: Arsenal (Semi)
1995; LC: Liverpool (Semi)
1998: FA: Arsenal (5th)
2000; LC: Leicester City (2nd)
2001; LC: Liverpool (Semi)

Just one missing.

Hang on. That's exactly the same list of 6 that I had reproduced in the post above yours. So, what's with this Ian and Neil got 6 between you ? ;) Fair do though. Him naming three meant I only had to think about the other three, and he gave a clue to a fourth.

So, you've now changed the goalposts and made it seven to come up with. I think the other one might be Wolves in 1980, when it was still called the League Cup.

Go on. Now tell us there's still an eighth one to find :)

Hang on again. Forest in '90 was the only one you got that Neil hadn't already mentioned !!! You are of course correct that Wolves in the 79/80 League Cup 3rd Round is the last one.

Surprisingly, it was just 4 days before we famously went top of the First Division with that win against Ipswich. It was also our first defeat in any match that season. I think we took a very early lead thanks to a rare Mike Flanagan goal. They went on to beat Forest in the final with an Andy Gray goal. They'd knocked us out of the FA Cup the previous season in a midweek 5th Round match, so were pretty unlucky in cup matches for us in those days.

Just thought I'd jog your memories ahead of our impending meeting.

Roll of the drums..................

You've got it! The answer is to be found on pages 32 & 33 of the programme each match.

As Neil says, no-one has yet sponsored Hudson, Andrews or Speroni, who have all had regular spells in the team at some stage over the past year, nor Kit Symons, who has managed the club.
But they have sponsored Hall, Leigertwood & Black, as well as John Harbin.

2. David Hopkin, Tommy Black, Chris Armstrong, Albert Harry
3. Mikael Forrsell, Clinton Morrison, Eric Young, Jerry Murphy

And finally...
4. Mark Bright, Lee Sinnott, David Beckham

Anyway, I seem to have started a trend with these connection questions. I'll have a stab at group 3, Neil.

Forrsell was born in Germany. Morrison and Murphy in England, I think. And if memory serves me right, Young was born in Singapore. (And if it wasn't Singapore, it certainly wasn't Wales). So my answer would be they all played international football for countries they weren't born in?

To be honest, no-one gives a monkeys who the player sponsors are - it's two pages of the programme I never look at, and none of my friends ever look at it either.

The last time I ever remember looking at it was probably about 10 years ago, when someone pointed out that Lombardo (or was it Wilkins?) was sponsored by a hairdressers!

My mate has sponsored Dougie for years and is a hairdresser.

But then Doug has hair.

Can anyone name 8 players who played for us in the 70's, who also played in a final, of any of the three major European competitions of the time.
Name the player,
who he played for in the final,
the competition and who the opposition was.

Yogi and Willie Wallace are correct, but Yogi never played in the lisbon final of 67. Wallace played in that final as well as the 1970 European Cup final v Feyenoord in which Hughes also played.

I was trying to find out about Jeffries. He was with City but only played about 5 games that season,so the chances of him having played in the 70 final v Gornik are pretty slim. Also wondered about Phil Holder at Tottenham, but again he was very much a fringe player.

Was Wyn Davies in that team? Although that's a pretty streaky one :)

DDD , nice one. I didn't have Mulligan. He went through my mind but I didn't think he was in that team. So their is still three to go.

Phil Holder definitely came on as a substitute for Spurs in the 2nd leg of the 73/74 UEFA Cup Final against Feyenoord.

You got it Ian. 1967 v Bayern Munich. Thought that Davie Provan was going to be the one to stump people.

1 Willie Wallace Celtic v Inter Milan 1967 and Celtic v Feyernoord 1970 European Cup
2 John Hughes, Celtic v Feyenoord 1970 European Cup
3 Charlie Cooke Chelsea v Real Madrid 1971 Cup Winners Cup
4 George Graham Arsenal v Anderlecht 1970 Fairs Cup
5 Wyn Davies, Newcastle United v Ujpesti Dozs 1969 Fairs Cup
6 Paddy Mulligan Chelsea v Real Madrid Cup Winners 1971
7 Phil Holder , Spurs v Feyenoord Eufa Cup final 1974
8 Roger Hynd, Glasgow Rangers v Bayern Munich, Cup winners Cup 1967
9 Davie Provan, Glasgow Rangers v Bayern Munich Cup winners 67

One more to go lads and we can all live happily ever after.

think that's it, unless Jeffries played in City's final which I've said before, I doubt very much.

After that spectacular and very entertaining question from big bad John in New York I will attempt to bring this thread back down to it's normal level with my next poser.

What links the following ex players with an area of Croydon?

(1) Sam Goodwin
(2) David Price
(3) Curtis Fleming
(4) Gareth Williams

Curtis Fleming and David Price have lived in Caterham or Caterham-on-the Hill.
