AJ, Wayne, Hughsie

Dorking .Eagle

had a feeling it might have been that!
All last season in the Prem, it was often pointed out that we didn't win a single Premier League game HOME OR AWAY in which the opposition scored, so guessed it might have been an extension of that record.

To be fair, I prefer to look at it as evidence that we're keeping a lot of clean sheets this season at home.

I pointed out to the other half (who always bets on AJ to score first combined with a 2-1 Palace win), that 2-0 has occurred a lot more frequently as a score this season.

That's not to say however we haven't won any AWAYS this season where the opposition have scored - BHA and Watford spring to mind

On 28th September 1960 at home to Southport, Johnny Byrne scored 4 in a 5-0 win. (old division 4)

Funnily enough I've been reading "To the Palace for the cup" and there's mention of our 1-0 win at Newcastle in a later round that season.

Haven't read beyond the cup finals but I'd agree that the Crystal Palace must have been used for something else that day. Rugby? Australia, South Africa, New Zealand the opponents?

Spot on. It was being used for a rugby international, hence the Rotherham match being moved to Stamford Bridge.

And here's some more from my mind of worthless information. It was actually Rotherham County we were playing. Rotherham had two teams at the time - County and (I believe) Town. Eventually the two teams amalgamated to become Rotherham United - hence the name.

Ruskin Old Boy
22-02-2006, 06:31 PM
Checked out our opponents that day - it was Rotherham City.

And England drew 3-3 with South Africa; it was pre-Twickenham. The match reports suggest that the Crystal Palace pitch was a quagmire and that several spectators, including Winston Churchill, suggested that as the match was drawn another match should be arranged.

name 3 ex Palace first team players who have managed a team in the final of a major European competition.

The three players managed four final games between them . One managed two games. Name the matches as well as the year.

The 2 most obvious ones:

Terry Venables & Barcelona
European Cup v Steau Bucharest, 1986 (Lost)

George Graham & Arsenal

I think those 2 only managed the above games, which would mean the missing guy is the one that managed 2 Finals ... (but I could be wrong)

I didn't think he played a first team match for us, but Roy Hodgson is an ex-Palace player and was manager of Inter Milan when they lost the UEFA Cup final against Schalke in 1997. That was still in the days when the final was played over 2 legs, so it might be him.

Was this the jammiest guess of all time?????:sob:

You're almost spot on (excuse the pun). But it wasn't because he felt sorry for them. It was in the 1940/41 season when, because of the war, teams often had trouble raising a side, and were allowed to use "guests" from other clubs. Despite this concession, Orient had turned up for the match with only 10 players, and Palace allowed one of their own players - Fred Gregory - to guest for Orient against his own team! In fact, it was also against his own brother, who was in the Palace line-up.

And when Orient were awarded a penalty, Gregory took it, and scored! It didn't affect the result though, as Palace won 6-2.

Correct Elwiss ! - well done Sir.

The first of those is the right answer.

"Bertie" Clarke was also a qualified Doctor and in 1943-45 worked at Guy's Hospital in London.

At this time, he also played football for them in the Hospital cup, scoring 10 goals in one match.

Palace signed him in 1944 and he played for a month in our reserves, scoring on his debut.

He didn't go on to play any first team football for us, but played test cricket for the West Indies several times in the late 1930's.

here's one for the geographical think tanks amongst you.
Keeping it to the last 35 years, name as many players, managers or chairmen of Palace whose first, or last name is also the name of an Island, a country, a city or a town.If it's abroad keep it to large cities as I'm sure you could do a map search and find about 50 Taylor cities in Canada alone or a little town called Swindlehurst somewhere in the Aussie outback.

I've come up with 11 but I'm sure we'll end up with a lot more.

Good to see Mark still enthusiastic about the game from the gantry at Woking on Saturday...It's 20 Years ago today (Thu. 13th Nov.'86) that Mark came down for his medical.

His debut 2 days later began the Wright / Bright partnership both scoring in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Home to Ipswich.

Some quizzie ?'s:

1) - Who else scored that day?
2) - How many more times that season did both of the W / B Partnership score in the same game?
3) - Which former team mate of Mark's was teaming up with an ex-Palace 'player' at about the same time...?
4) - Which ex-Palace player joined Leicester at the start of that year, keeping Mark out of the side?
5) - Which other team mate at Leicester was to pick up a Championship medal - that's 1st Division proper?
6) - What was the fee?
7) - What was notable about Mark's last Reserve appearance for the Foxes?
8) - Who scored more League goals for Palace, Mark or Ian?
9) - Who was the Swiss Club Mark ended up playing for?
10) - What is Mark's middle name?

And / or memories of that fateful opening day debut and other happy highlights & impressions of his illustrious Palace career...

It was but it goes beyond that. As far as we know, he hadn't been before, so the supplementary question (which relates to his transfer) is why this might have happened.

He does have a middle name...

I'd guess then that it was played after the transfer had been announced/agreed. Although I find it mind-boggling that we'd have agreed to that.

I think Mark played the first two games only of that season for the Foxes. Ron & Steve evidently had a hunch that 'with a name like that' he could play alongside Ian. Initial enquiries were rebuffed and the two parties weren't able to agree terms. When it came back that Brighty had a problem with his hip it was a huge leap of faith to keep pursuing him. It took about three weeks of persistence by the dynanic duo who had both watched him play many times by then to thrash out a deal with Leicester.

By now it was obvious that Mark was leaving and the deal was that we had him on a 3 month (?) trial, with an open option to buy him if he remained injury free. It is this I think that led to the abuse. Don't forget Tony Sealy was keeping him out of the side at the time, but they must have known what they were going to miss and almost certainly convinced that he was going to a smaller Club.

A lot of this obviously is conjecture, so anyone with further insights into this time? It's a nice thought but his middle name isn't Ian. However Ian's middle name is quite fitting - BOTH of those still open to intelligent guesswork.

Any further memories of Mark Bright's career as well as the last remaining unanswered questions / light on the above.

My Leicester supporting mates once told me that they simply didn't rate Bright, were glad to get rid of him for £75k and were genuinely amazed at the subsequent career he enjoyed. He had a tough act to follow in trying to fill Gary's boots at Filbert Street.

Sounds a bit like how I felt about Collymore. I was delighted when Coppell flogged him to Southend...

It's true, maybe he didn't exactly set Filbert Street alight. In two years there, he warmed the bench initially, then had his run in the side and then got injured. Would've thought he was more of a rival for Smith's place than a strike partner, so it was always fortuitous that we were the only ones who seemed to spot his 'potential' at the time.

Unlike you, I was a big Collymore fan. Saw him countless times in the Reserves at Plough Lane when he'd just carve open defences seemingly at will. Noades once told me he'd been signed 'to keep Mark Bright on his toes' as he thought he was getting too complacent.

Again, it's strange that by the time we paid £100K for Stan's 'potential' it was a bargain. Not sure if Stafford ever saw any of the future money he went for in sell on clauses - I think we got a cut when he went to Forest, but none of the £8M & £5M when he went to Anfield & Villa respectively.

Didn't Mark Brennan try to claim a hat trick for Ipswich in that game because Kevin Wilson's shot for one of the goals ran over his foot or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I honestly knew the hard answers - like hismiddle name and El Tel.

However- re the supplementary question- did he sustain his hip injury in the reserve game?

Anyone else on how he did actually sustain his injury?

Number two remains unanswered....

...and how many strike partners did Mark have at the Palace?

Gold Star Sir! The dynamic duo even failed to both score when we smashed six past The Blue Noses at Home...and the following season Away!
So: any more partners for Markie:

Wright
Salako
Barber
Gray
Thompson
Armstrong...
Coleman
Whyte
Gabbiadini
... ? ...
Were there any more?
Or would ANY of the answerers like to pose a question?

Well done all.

It was Twenty Years ago today,
Mark and Ian were told to PLAY.

mmmm, when 3-3 against Ipswich WAS a GOOD result :o :p (15.11.86)

If substitutes count, then Jamie Moralee came off the bench to partner Bright at least 3 times.

Does that earn me the right to ask a question ?

OK; how many past or present Palace players have appeared in the 16 FA Cup Finals that have followed our ill-fated appearance in 1990 ?

There's 14 to get (I think). Name the player, his club and the year. Plus, which 2 of those players have appeared in more than one Final (excluding replays) ? There is also one extra player who was a non-playing substitute.

Eddie McGoldrick didn't play in an FA Cup Final.

Ian Wright & Mark Bright both played in the 1993 Final for Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday respectively, but so did 2 other future Palace players. Wright is one of only 2 players to appear in more than one final and is the only to have scored.

Re BBD's question, we've played all of them in our final away match of the season in matches that determined either their or our promotion/relegation ?

(Actually that's not strictly true regarding Orient but it nearly was in 79; the rest is true but probably not what you're looking for)

Andy Linighan is one of the other players in the 93 final to play for Palace.

Very good call E.A.M. As you say not the answer I was looking for but an excellent answer anyway.

If you start off thinking Orient, it may help you to get along the right track...
