Today's question for a bit of fun .....
Who was the first player to be capped at International level for Palace ?
Whom did he represent, who did they play, and what was the score.

Was it a bloke called Davis for Wales in 1910 or something?
I can't remember the exact details, but this may jog a few memories for the rest of the details.

I'm sure that Alderton was the first ENGLISH international, but I'm sure we had a Welsh one before him. I could be wrong though.

I was sitting with Ian Evans family during that match - his brother's a friend of mine - and as you can imagine, they were on cloud 9. As I recall, all 3 goals were headers.
Don't think it was against QPR though, Bobby. Was it against Cambridge? Or if not, Gillingham?

Do you mean midfielder or winger, in which case I guess Steve Kember.
If you mean someone who played in midfield and the wing, then maybe John Salako?

Actually, thinking about it, it is probably a non-answerable question, as, there is always confusion over a position. Johnny Byrne played many games for Palace out wide, not as a central forward. Does he count?.
Andy Gray scored 51 goals for Palace, some from midfield, some from winger and a number from forward.
Phil Barber(41) and John Salako(34) also played in midfield and wide, plus they also played as forwards.
Steve Kember(38) and Peter Taylor(39) were not forwards, so, they could qualify.
But, I think the answere AR is looking for is George Clark, who scored 105 from the outside-right position back in the 20's.

Congratulations AJ and thanks for the additional stats ....
George Clarke (Palace career 1925-1933 is indeed the answer).
Your point about the position being a bit flexible is also correct (more so in those days).
George was primarily a winger (also called outside left in those days) and contributed 106 goals in 299 games.
Another wonderful Palace player from the past :p

Yep, that's it. His whole story is somewhat interesting. He was a good player, then lost a leg, then moved into coaching/management at Aston Villa and then joined Palace. I think, although, not sure, that he may have got Palace's first shirt(from Villa), hence the similarity between Villa and Palace's shirts in the old days(claret and blue).

George Clarke is second from the right, second row down.
Edmund Goodman is on the far right, thrid row down; he retired in 1927. (And yes, he did bring the claret and blues shirt from Villa.)
Also in the pic is Roy McCracken, fourth from the left, top row, who I think was Palace's first international player (for Northern Ireland).

Blyth came back to the club on loan from Millwall in 1977/78. It looks as though Nicholas came back very briefly on loan before he signed for Palace (doesn't look like there was a fee).

Peter Simpson. Now that's a player I wish was in the reserves today. He was not even selected for the first team of the 1929/30 season until the 5th game, when another player was injured. He certainly made his mark with a hattrick. He went on to score 36 goals that season in only 34 games. In the following season's he just kept on scoring, including the record 46 league goals in one season. Incidently, that same season he also scored 8 cup goals, 6 in one match, so, he ended the season on 54 goals.
His record of 166 league goals in 195 games has been untouchable by any other Palace player. To put in in comparison Ian Wright scored 92 league goals in 229 appearances.
Maybe this Gareth Williams chap can be half as good as Simpson and we will be just as happy.

When I asked the loan question, I was thinking of Mel Blyth. I guess Peter Nicholas is technically the correct answer but his 'on-loan' status was just a technicality prior to re-signing for Palace. Blyth returned (to Southampton I thought) after his loan period expired whereas Peter Nicholas obviously didn't.
Another question; when was the last time that Palace had to play away from home, wearing the oppositions away kit because the referee thought that our kit clashed. (Like my last question, the answer I have in mind might not be the definitive answer).

It was John Jackson - 254 consecutive league & cup apps between 19/8/67 & 7/10/72
(or did you think it was Johnny McNichol? He had the most consecutive appearances following his debut, but still 101 short of Jacko's total)
Oh and the Whitehorse scoreboard was "opened" for the Man Uts game in Aug 1989

It was Birmingham. The thing that really annoyed me about that was the pitch invasion lasted on for ages with stewards trying to keep order and the police doing sweet fa until the mounted police were assembled in the corner between the Whitehorse and the Arthur (where The Flatterer used to come out of). After about 10-15 minutes, when the fighting had more or less run out of steam, the cavalry came charging across the pitch, the remaining "fans" ran back into the stands and the plods suddenly got very brave and started wacking anyone in reach and hauling off a few random culprits.
Complete cowardly ineptitude from the Met that day.

That does actually beat the game I have in mind, but I would question whether did it ever really have a fixed date to begin with. So can we stick to recognised fixtures please... otherwise I'll start quoting the friendly we promised Yeovil, after the Pardew transfer in 1987 which we eventually got around to playing in 1993!

Quite so, AJ. China (and other Asian teams) have a weird system of capping players which means they get a cap even if its just a warm up game (for example, Caps were earned for the two freindlies the national side played against Palace). I think we should stick to FIFA recognised games though. I make it Fan played in 15 whilst here. Any views, Alan?

Who, out of our 1990 Cup Final team, have played in Europe?
In which UEFA recognised Competition?
For which Club?
It's a trick question
All of them
In the Premier League, Nationwide League, Scottish League and Spanish League
For all their previous and subsequent clubs.
(And Gary O'Reilly played in the UEFA or similar for Spurs I think?)

Well then, I'm not a mindreader! He didn't play for Marbella in Europe.
And no its not a trick question, I was trying to knock out the Anglo Italian Cup as couldn't be arsed to check whether Barber made any appearances for Millwall in it.

Correct on O'Reilly though PK... UEFA 1984 (when Spurs won it)
So a recap we've definately got:
O'Reilly - Spurs UEFA 1984
Salako - Swansea 1989 Cup Winners Cup
Martyn - Leeds UEFA & Champions League
And perm two from:
Wrighty for the Gooners;
Brighty for Owls and/or
Pembo for Leeds
There's still another one that no-one has mentioned...
(MCGioldrick wasn't in the Cup Final team)

Name the 7 Division One teams that do not have a player or Manager that has played or Managed Palace?
Don't forget my question:confused:

We are getting short on players here Neil. If my memory serves me right, the one no-one has mentioned is from the following;
Andy Thorn
Richard Shaw
Geoff Thomas
Alan Pardew
Phil Barber
Dave Madden
Unless Thorn did either before he joined Palace or after he left with Wimbledon. Unless Pardew played in the Anglo Italian with Charlton. I cannot see Shaw(Coventry) or Thomas(Wolves/injured) being in a major UEFA competition.
Who was the 3rd played on the bench?

Well done PK... full marks for that.
The other two were Wrighty (of course) and Pembo for Leeds... sadly Brighty never played in Europe (not even for the Swiss side Sion either)!
With reference to AJ's question, I know its not what he meant but sticking to the wording of the question I feel I must inform you that Pembo is now Youth Team Manager at Forest!
