I know this is a bit of "self backslapping" but, sod it, I do feel rightly proud of myself.

The Brighton game is the 30th anniversary, (or near as damn it), of my following of Crystal Palace!

As a 11 & 12 year old, a friend of my father used to take my schoolmate and I to watch the local team, Swindon Town, play. My hero was "Sir" Don Rogers and so, as an impressionable 12 year old, when he came to Palace, so did I.

I sort of had a soft spot for Palace, watching the 2-3 defeat at home to Arsenal on The Big Match a couple of weeks before, but "Sir" Don transferring was all the reason I needed to switch my allegiance. Besides I had two Palace Subbuteo teams!!

Highlights? Got to be going to Wembley 3 times in a matter of months, Burnley at home in 1979, THAT semi final at Villa Park, and the amazing feeling when we cheated relegation at Stockport!

Low points? Too many to mention!

I know her and I have had our ups and downs, but I wouldn't have swapped her for the world. I bet no other club in the land has had the fun we've had!

But my biggest regret is not making a few notes of the day at all the games I've been to! The memories are just a blur!

Roll on another 30!!

Piss of you *******.

I do not want to be reminded of how quickly the years pass - because it reminds me of how old I am.

30 Years since we signed Don Rogers - of course it is, I knew it was, but it's still incredible to think that it's so long ago.

Mind you, I'm not so worried about my age as to have even a hint of jealousy for those who are younger than me. In fact I feel a bit sorry for any Palace fans who are not old enough to have seen Don play.

To have seen him streaking away at 90 miles per hour, with defenders trailing after him, the ball never more than a foot from him, perfect balance in the mud that was always present in that 72/73 winter, and the cool precision as he beat the goal keeper.................. Well, if you've not seen it words can never do it justice.

So, 30 years mate. Just think, if you'd done murder you'd be free by now :p

As I've posted before, the 72/73 season sums up being a Palace fan.

We look back on the halcyon days of the great Don, 'Yogi' Hughes, John Craven et al. And then we remind ourselves that we were relegated that season.

We've had some great players at Selhurst Park over the years but Don Rogers will always be my favourite.

Remember his goal against Moan Utd in December 1972, when he drew Stepney out, knocked the ball one way, and went the other?

Class!

I remember that game. Paul Hinshelwood was playing up front complete with Art Garfunkel style haircut. Anyone remember how many games he played as a striker befor converting to full back?

On checking my Rev Sands I realise that I had completely forgotten that Mr Rogers scored twice that day as well.
