FOOTBALL: DUNDEE BID FOR SERIE A SUPERSTARS
DUNDEE are preparing an ambitious double swoop for Italian superstars Attilio Lombardo and Roberto Mancini.
The duo, who formed an exciting partnership at Sampdoria during the 1990s, are friends of new Dens bosses Ivano and Dario Bonetti and it's understood they have already been sounded out about moving to Scotland.
Mancini, 36, is less likely to be enticed to continue his playing career for another season after being offered the No.2 role at Lazio behind coach Sven Goran Eriksson.
However, 34-year-old Lombardo is nearing the end of a short term contract in China following spells at Crystal Palace and Lazio and will soon be available on a free. Dundee supremo Peter Marr is backing the Bonettis to deliver the club's first major trophy in 25 years.
A spokesman said: "One of the reasons we wanted Ivano and Dario Bonetti at Dundee is because they are able to draw upon the excellent contacts they've built up at the highest levels of the European game.
"Both have played at the best clubs in the world alongside some of the biggest names and they are now in a position to take advantage of that superb contact base.
"We will not comment on potential signing targets but it is safe to say we expect two or three players to arrive at Dens Park from the continent in the near future."
The Bonettis could take charge within the next two weeks if Jocky Scott accepts an offer to quit his post before his contract expires on July 9. Scott is currently considering a settlement and is expected to respond through his lawyer - former Celtic general manager Jock Brown - by the end of the week.
