I see that today's papers are full of vitriol about England's doomed World Cup bid.

Well, there's a newsflash.

This isn't hindsight either - I've been telling everyone for as long as I can remember that we had no chance. None whatsoever.

The finals were in Europe last time. The next are in Asia and in was crystal clear that it would be Africa after that.

The 2010 finals will be in South America (probably Brazil, now that they have pulled out in favour of South Africa).

Quite apart from anything else, we reneged on an agreement we had made with Germany too.

We have squandered millions of ******* pounds on this complete and utter shambles. Money which would be much better directed towards youth development in this country so that in a few years time, when taking the field against the likes of Italy, France, Holland etc. it might at least look as if we're playing the same ******* game as them!

Everybody involved with this pathetic debacle should be sacked, immediately.

Totall agree Gooders. Be interesting to see how S.Africa manage the whole thing though.

Has South Africa really got the infrastructure / stadia to give the World Cup the stage it deserves?

Well I'm not sure it has but they've got 5 years to sort it out.

I don't want to go over ALL the old ground but WE haven't got a Stadium fit to host a World Cup final either! Look at the stupid Wembley fiasco.

All those last minute rows about whether it could host athletics as well as football; all that discussion about the fact that Wembley is a terrible site for access etc. and "a new stadium should be built in near Birmingham".

The answer to this was "no, Wembley has the Twin Towers, must preserve tradition and all that".

So Wembley gets the vote and the Twin Towers promptly get the kiss of death! Utterly ridiculous. And have you seen the current estimate of the costs?!!! Frightening.

The people in charge of this couldn't organise the proverbial piss-up in a brewery.

Like I said, sack the lot of 'em!

Gooders, In my honest opinion England never deserved to host the World Cup in 2006 anyway because of the behaviour of the hooligans abroad over that past five years. Also providing an African nation has the infrastructure to host to World Cup and that country is politically stable, then why shouldn't it be held in that country?

Couldn't agree more.

Couldn't agree more, sack them all. I don't really want the world cup here until we have a team that can play football. Keep it as far away as possible until then and save us the embarrassment of a shambolic team.

South Africa has 2 or three stunning stadia but its infrastructure is poor and the country will remain intimidating to visiting supporters.

Did anybody else see Sir Bobby Charlton saying (during the final presentation) that a vote for the English bid would mean more to him than anything he achieved during his career?! Let's keep things in perspective! I'm sure that sounded just as ridiculous to the FIFA delegates as it did to me.
