What's happened? We used to have the greatest 4x400m relay team in the world. Now Iwan's been injured on and off for 18 months and will struggle to get in enough training before Sidney, Mark Richardson's hasn't trained as well as he should have done due to the drug allegations and Jamie Baulch isn't running as well as he can. We also lack a 4th top runner. A couple of years ago I reckon one of either Mark or Iwan, probably Iwan would have beaten Johnson in the individual, now I'm not so sure.

John 24, You’re havin’ a laugh mate!!!!
Johnson is STILL one of the most awesome athletes the world has EVER seen. We don’t have anyone who comes remotely close!!!!!!!!1

I wouldn't dispute that Johnson's awesome but he IS beatable as Mark has ALREADY proven and others have certainly come close.

Not that Iwan's in the equation anymore after todays awful decision by the selectors.

Isn't this just more pre-Olympic Coleman Brit hype ? As far as I know, we won 1 4x 4 world championship gold in Japan in 1991 - that's nearly 10 years ago now - and yes, a couple of Olympic Gold's before Herr Hitler.
The Yanks have 4 of the top 8 ranked 400 runners - we have 2 in the top 20, one of whom may not be allowed to run. Look at the tables on the IAAF site.
We HAVE over-performed over the years and delivered silvers and bronzes way above our rankings, but when it comes down to it 1 gold medal in 50 years of competition speaks for itself. Plucky Brits not coming first . . . but doing rather well.
We won't add to that gold total in this event in Sydney . .

So whos running in the 400m for great Britain in the Olympics then?

Mark Richardson, Jamie Baulch & the bloke who finished 2nd in the trials (name completely escapes me for the mo)
although Richardson's case is still being looked at by the IAAF if I'm not mistaken - if his ban get's re-instated would Thomas go??
Think it's disgusting if the selectors told Thomas not to run and they would give him a chance later.
Can't believe however that I heard someone on the radio suggesting that Baulch should offer to step down if Iwan proves his fitness. As if he'd give up his chance of going to Sydney!!

While I hope all our athletes do well the performance of the Great Britain team historically will soon be an irrelevance. After Sydney the gold medal count is guaranteed to go down even further because at the 2004 Olympics is is proposed that there will be no Great Britain. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be running as separate teams due to devolution and there's apparently nothing to stop that from happening. I can only see it as a disaster myself.

That's an interesting point Ian but I am not sure I entirely agree.
As far as track and field goes, it is only the relays which are "team" events, so that is the only area which would be seriously adversely impacted by these changes - I think.
In terms of the rest, there is ony 1 team sport that really matters (sorry Mr Redgrave) and that is FOOTBALL. These changes will allow England to enter a team into the Olympics without risking our UEFA status, which is why we don't send a team now.
Although like most of us I am Palace 1 and 2 and England a poor third, I still love international tournaments where England are playing . . .
So it's not all bad . .

???
How does that work. Surely Ian's correct. For example Colin Jackson will be earning medals for Wales and Mark Richardson will be earning medals for England, as apposed to their respective medals being counted together as Great Britains medals. So England will earn less medals than Great Britain together would have.
