View Full Version : Even Obscurer Australian Football Thread

At the risk of upsetting those back in the UK by swamping the 'World of Sport' index with 'Australian Rules' threads, I'd just like to plug the North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL Grand Final tomorrow v. Sandringham (aka Melbourne Reserves)...
I'll be down there barracking for my local team (this obviously won't sound familiar to Australian based Man U supporters, who I presume will all be barracking for Essendon...)
Any views from other Vic based posters? (sorry to see Seville went down to Monbulk last week, Skid...here's to next season, eh?)

Thanks for the sympathy vote Vic but last week was great not having to train. I've been looking forward for the end of the season since about April. As for next year, I dont even want to think about that at the moment.
I'm not too sure about North Ballarat getting up to win from 5 goals down at half time either Vic, but stranger things have happened.

Just got back from Waverley...it was never going to happen. IMO, Sandringham were head and shoulders above the Roosters today (and all other teams in the VFL this season, for that matter).

Commiserations, Vic. As a fairly unbiased observer of VFL, I was hoping for North Ballarat to get up over one of the "traditional" suburban teams, but they were never really in it, were they.
And a fairly sad farewell to Waverley also. Although I expect you'd want to argue that one, Skid? You seem to take the contrary view to me on most things.

I guess Waverley has some sentimental value that I couldn't really guess at being a recent migrant, but in my book Colonial is:
(a) more comfortable for spectators; and
(b) easier to get to from Ballarat.
Went to the rugby union (Aus v. South Africa) at Colonial though and the price of tickets was a rip off - Ticketmaster's sticky fingers??

Indeed, Vic. Ticketmaster are getting caught out now because their rip-off behaviour is getting worse. Regarding Colonial, yes, more comfortable, and would be great when there's a full house, but the alienation of the grass roots fans in favour of the Medallion club etc irks me. I went to Crows/Bulldogs and the real fans were squashed into the worst viewing areas, while the best viewing spots were sparsely populated by the suited corporates.

Chaps - sorry, having just moved to Sandy guess I have to "barrack" for them, and they did win ! Good CP result on the w/e too, not often we miss a penalty and an open goal and still win. On the subject of REAL footy, who's going to the G for Oz/Italy in the Olympics ? CP banners/scarves to the fore or wot ? Also did any of you go to the recent Soccer Expo in Jeff's shed ? CP merchandise on one of the stalls from the last Premiership season ! 60 bucks the away shirt and 50 buck the polo shirt ! Aargh ! Here's an idea for us Melbourne-based fans - what about a few CP momentoes in a local pub ? The Charles Dickens on Collins has a WHU, Man U, and Chelsea display. What about us ? Sandy soccer club has a couple of old CP shirts hanging in the clubroom so we've started populating already, let's expand ! Yours in Palace....
interested in sydney.

Yes very obscure.
There seems to be increasing numbers of Palace supporters on the Eastern seaboard of Oz. Perhaps we should organise a get together at a central point like Bungholes place in Canberra or Yass Cassino .How many of us are out there?

Ooooh nasty. This is not the case this time as Waverley was only 15 minutes away from my home and I was very annoyed that Hawthorn was moved away from there. Granted, it wasnt the best viewing arena but the surface cant be beat. I dont mind the MCG though.

Are there still any tickets left, LHHHG? I heard they had all sold out but a Cornish colleague of mine (bizarrely I work surrounded by Cornishmen in country Victoria) managed to get tickets very recently...
Yep, sold out. And with Kewell and Okon out we might be struggling to get through the group stage.

Even with Kewell and Okon, I still think you would of found it hard to get through Skid, as Oz are in a very tough group.

Italy, Nigeria and Honduras tough? Ha, we would flog those sides. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif Okay maybe not but we did beat Nigeria last year or maybe earlier this year I think with a dodgy team so there is no reason why we cant do it again. Honduras - who??? Italy, they're bound to choke if it comes down to penalties.

Agree with you Skid - Aus have a good team (although much less daunting without Kewell and Okon), and the home support will raise them a notch or two - I still think they're a fair bet to progress.
I left my run a little late for the Aus/Italy opener. I'm turning up at the G for one of the later weeknight sessions. Plenty of tickets still available - be careful re crappy viewing positions with the cheaper seats (I learnt that at Aus/Iran). And don't use the phone or web booking if you're anywhere near the city - pick up tix directly from the Town Hall booking office.
