Australian soccer's hoodoo at the MCG continued last night as the Olyroos went down 1-0 to Italy in the Olympic opener. 93,000 (eclipsing the crowd at the heart-wrenching Venables-led 2-2 World Cup failure v Iran) saw the Aussies have the lion's share of 2nd half chances, but conceded the only goal 10 minutes from time.

Nick Rizzo was brought on for the last 8 minutes but had insufficient time to make an impact.

The referee was an absolute disgrace and the Italians diving all the time were just as bad. They definetly didnt like it hard though and if it wasnt for some outstanding saves from their keeper, we would have scored atleast three. We would have won easily if we had Harry. I am quietly confident though that we will beat Nigeria and Honduras to go through to the next round.

For a crowd of 93,000 it certainly was quiet. Us Melbourne folk have no idea how to act at a soccer game.

I couldn't get to the game but it sounded quiet on the TV coverage. Too many non-soccer "let's take the kids for an Olympic experience" types there? By comparison, the atmosphere for WC 2-2 Iran was better, but then the stakes were higher.

Perhaps it's because you call it soccer rather than its proper name. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

Rizzo was pants, never tackled back, only interested in playing his football in the last third, looks like aussie football bosses have sussed him as well. Nice to see one sport not being hogged by Australia.
