Yes it's familiar. 49ers didn't make it to the franchise play-offs last season, Still hoping to go to a Superbowl soon though. So far I've only got as far as buying the programmes.

So far the 49ers have lost 3 out of 4 friendlies and face the Broncos tonite. First game for real is on 3 September when we play Atlanta.

I see the Giants are playing Baltimore tonite and have got the Cardinals on 3/9.
Quarterback Kerry Collins has performed well this preseason, but the Giants know their offense won't reach its potential without strong play from the front line. The Giants hope newcomers Lomas Brown, Dusty Zeigler and Glenn Parker will provide Collins with ample time to throw and clear space for running backs Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber. The Giants also need a strong season from WR Joe Jurevicius, who had a 16-yard TD catch in Friday's 27-24 preseason loss to the New York Jets.

Well I got into it from Playing Madden on the Megadrive. If you don't like the tactics then yes I could be dull but I find it fascinating. If you've ever seen Steve Young (or even Joe Montana) throw a 50 yard pass and Jerry Rice completes and runs through the opposition defence for a touchdown then you'd understand.

Miami Dolphins fan myself (been to Pro Player Stadium in Miami a few years back), but not optimistic about the new season.

Love the game myself, both physical and a thinking man's game. Anyone who says it is for wimps (because of the padding) doesn't know what they're talking about, although I can see why the time it takes to play could annoy some people.

GB, who do think will win the Super Bowl this year?

I know Washington have invested a lot in free agents, but Norv Turner isn't the coach to do it.

I'd pick either Tampa Bay myself (really going out on a limb, I know!).

Strathclyde,

49ers lost 24-28 to Denver on Friday.
Dolphins won 22-17 at New Orleans also.

Not too sure who'll be there or thereabouts come January. I'm hoping, apart from the 49ers, that the Cowboys, Chiefs, Jaguars and Bills can pick themselves up to battle hard. I'll wait until week 1 is finished and give a report on who I think will be favourites.

Look out for those Redskins, they have one of the best linesmen to come out of College Football in years. Chris Samuals ex Alabama and Shaw HS Mobile.

I would pick one from the following:
Redskins, Bucs, Rams, Bears.

Sept 2nd: Alabama (ranked 3rd) plays UCLA in LA, We have just lost an All American Defensive Lineman, and an ALL American LineBacker, but we will still be there come the end of the season. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Looks like there'll be 75,000 plus at the Rose Bowl.

Alabama finished the 1999 season with a 10-3 record, including two wins over Florida, and the number eight ranking in both polls. The Tide ended the season by dropping an overtime thriller to Michigan (35-34) in the Orange Bowl.

Coach Mike DuBose, Alabama class of 1974, is a former Tide player, and is in his fourth season as head coach. He played defensive line on three SEC Championship squads and the 1973 national championship team. DuBose, the 1999 Conference Coach of the Year, enters the 2000 season with a 21-15 mark. Quarterback Andrew Zow completed 56% of his passes last season for 1,799 yards. Wideout Freddie Milons caught a school-record 65 balls for 733 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Defensive tackle Kenny Smith and linebacker Saleem Rasheed head up a defense which, like the offense, returns nine starters.

The Crimson Tide has played in the Rose Bowl game six times and posted a 4-1-1 record (1926 - 20-19 vs. Washington; 1927 - 7-7 vs. Stanford; 1931 - 24-0 vs. Washington State; 1935 - 29-13 vs. Stanford; 1938 - 0-13 vs. California; 1946 - 34-14 vs. USC). Quite a spread over the years!

Alabama Tide appear to have stumbled in the opener. DeShaun Foster ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns as UCLA Bruins overcame the early loss of starting quarterback Cory Paus to upset Crimson Tide 35-24. A win against the tide (pun not intended!) so to speak as it's the first time in 10 years a top three team has lost its opener.

Miami (Ohio)came back from 30-20 to win against Vandy. Unless DuBose comes up with a mircle package before Saturday, I can only see even more humble pie being dished out next week-end.

Headlines in local rag states: "Bama's bubble bursts as UCLA takes No. 3 Tide to the woodshed".

Just goes to prove you watch a game on the box and see things and then you pick up the paper and you wonder if they were watching the same game. UCLA gave us an old fashion arse whipping.

I would like to know what he is smoking, cause I would buy several packages?

My greatest fear was our secondary and linebackers, I knew going in that we had no kicking game. Michigan exposed our secondary in the Orange bowl last year and they have not improved, big wideouts will beat 5-9 DB's everytime. We miss Constant (big LB over 240 lbs) we have nobody over 220lbs.

It is easy to blame the QB, but there is more than enough blame to go around and I think it begins and ends with the coaches, if someone cannot perform why is he out there? Our DB's were at least 10 yds off the line everytime and got beaten almost everytime, why not put them on the line and hit the receivers as they come off the line, what have we got to lose, they cannot stop anyone when they have them in front of them?
Your defence cannot stay on the field as long as ours did, the offence did not help matters and our kicking game gave them excellent position almost everytime.

I was going to come over after the Auburn game, but have seen this display I am changing my plans and coming over for the Tranmere and Stockport games. I know that one game does not make a season, but I did not see anything in the second half that gave me the impression that our coaching staff had the intelligence or players to make changes. Unlike the real football, this version of football is made up of set plays and when someone beats you with the same play time and time again, there is some thing wrong or your team is not as good as you think?

Sorry this is so long, but I had to get it off my chest, boy what a msiable week-end!

Goldberg Basher
04-09-2000, 10:37 PM
PalaceFan,

Is the Tide's problem one of re-forming at the beginning of the season or were they underperforming last season? I'm sure it is a matter of better integration. As you said a bad game's regularly blamed on the QB when we all know it's down to how the whole team predict and attack the other's offensive while being successful in their own.

By the way is there any news on how Moorehead is recovering?

PalaceFan in Alabama
05-09-2000, 05:03 PM
The operation went OK, it will be several months before he goes into full rehab. Dubose stated in his TV show that things did not go right, some players arm tackled and we can't have that, boy that makes me feel real good. No mention of how poorly the DB's, and LB's played, and not one mention about how poorly we punted the ball?
My one major problem with Dubose is that he plays Seniors, because they have paid their dues???? Alexander played behind three old dogs for two years and look what he did in the last two years he played, in his first year he ran for over 200 yrds against LSU and then played behind the dogs (must have been pure luck?)

Have you seen any of the highlights from the Monday night game?

Goldberg Basher

You mean the Rams v Broncos game? No I've not seen it yet but it's on later so I'll either be in for another really late night or it'll be taped. I always try not to find out the score before seeing a game but had to find out (41-36). same goes with Match of the Day for the Premiership results.

It looks an entertaining game. Rams' Kurt Warner returned to his now familiar MVP role striking 441 yards, 3 TDs & 3 interceptions.

PalaceFan in Alabama
10-09-2000, 06:37 AM
GB, well we won today, it was a struggle.
We may have proved that we have a couple of running backs and then in the post game, Dubose states that he wanted to get the Bohannon in the game , this is after he had 3 fumbles & 6 yds last week. It looks as if Dubose has finally getting away from the two QB's look. He said after the game that Watts will be the starter next week!
I think it's time that Dubose put up or move on (boy does that sound like some of the postings asking for Smith's head?) we have not looked anything like a ranked team in our first two games.
Many upset in College Football, none bigger than South Carolina beating #9 Georgia.

Close call despite the end score. What were you thinking the end score was going to be after that 3rd quarter? Must have been an excellent finale! Bet it's a great relief to be back in the winning ways. Pressure and everything, we both know how Smith & Jordy feel at the moment.

Bit difficult to see any action now as I cannot get any reports on the games, there's absolutely no coverage in the UK.

QB Marques Tuiasosopo (11) led the Huskies to the upset win.

Georgia was supposed to have some bite this season, but Lou Holtz and South Carolina muzzled the 10th-ranked Dawgs 21-10. Meanwhile, the Huskies weren't just barking when they talked about upsetting Miami. No. 15 Washington snuck up and bit No. 4 Miami 34-29.

• No. 6 Wisconsin edges Oregon 27-23

No. 1 Huskers survive Notre Dame
Notre Dame had an answer for almost everything Nebraska did in South Bend today. Almost. Eric Crouch scored three TDs, including the game winner, to lead the top-ranked Huskers to a 27-24 OT win.

Week 2 Pro footy results:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/news/2000/09/13/wednesday_roundup_ap/nfl_65.gif

Monday 11 Sep

NE Patriots 19 - 20 NY Jets

Sunday 10 Sep

KC Chiefs 14 - 17 Titans
Jaguars 36 - 39 Baltimore Ravens
GB Packers 18 - 27 Bills
Browns 24 - 7 Bengals
Raiders 38 - 31 Colts
Dolphins 7 - 13 Vikings
NY Giants 33 - 18 Philly Eagles
Bears 0 - 41 Buccaneers
Falcons 14 - 42 Broncos
Redskins 10 - 15 Lions
Saints 28 - 27 Chargers
Rams 37 - 34 Seahawks
Panthers 38 - 22 49ers http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif
Cowboys 31 - 32 Cardinals

League leaders so far:

AFC East - Buffalo, 2-0-0. Playing NY Jets next on Sep 17. Jets won feature game on Monday.
AFC Central - Baltimore, 2-0-0. Playing the Dolphins on Sep 17. Dolphins lost out to Minnesota on Sunday.
AFC West - Oakland Raiders, 2-0-0. Playing the Broncos on Sep 17. The Broncos won impressively against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday.

NFC East - NY Giants, 2-0-0. Playing the Bears on Sep 17. The Bears lost miserably 0-41 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so it looks another win for the Giants.
NFC Central - Detroit Lions, 2-0-0. Playing the Buccaneers on Sep 17, their last game mentioned above.
NFC West - Rams, 2-0-0. Playing my beloved 49ers on Sep 17. Unfortunately the 49ers have lost both opening games and here's hoping week 3 is a turn around.

Commiserations Palacefan,

It's very difficult to deny it when faced with a stuffing. Still us CPFC fans should always try at least to look on the brighter side. Southern Miss were sportsmanlike for their coach Jeff Bower to say:

"We beat a good football team. "I hope you don't write about what is wrong with Alabama, I hope you write about the good football team we have."

Whether you treat that soundbyte as a compliment or a pi55 take is up to you.

In some way he is applauding his team for an excellent win but then requests for a post mortem on the Tide. The best thing you could say was that it was a rare occasion for the Golden Eagles (we get everywhere) as they last beat Alabama way back in 1990, when they had Brett Favre.

I think this was just an off-day and you WILL see an improvement when they meet Arkansas next week. Although the defence will need tightening and pass completions will need working on. Zow completed only 34% (?) and made 112 yards from 11 in 32 attempts.

I'll need to spend some time looking over the result but hopefully I'll post a more detailed report later on.

BTW, have you ever played the game? Not neccesarily serious but just in the park etc?
