View Full Version : Best "last song" at a club
Baloo

ozeagle's obsessive response to Belle & Sebastian being the last song at our recent excursion to Nottingham's Cookie Club got me thinking about my favourite song to round off an evening's bouncing around a dance floor.
My personal favourite experience was when my girlfriend of the time managed to persuade the DJ to play "Bare Necessities" (long before the days of the BBS).
When I was DJing at Uni I would finish with the full-length version of Resurrection (if there were sufficient indie-lovers in the house) or (if not) something light-hearted like the Wombles Song or Phenomenon by the Muppets (is that what it was called?).
Anyone else got any particular favourites?
Always used to be "Three times a lady" by the Commodores when I was a lad.

Theme to "Thunderbirds" used to be a popular one, but the pub I used to work in always played "Champagne Supernova" at the end of a busy Saturday night which always went down a storm.

New York New York is a great end to the night, but is a bit too "wedding-y" for a club, isn't it?

At our 6th form leavers boat party, the final song of the evening, requested a week in advance by some of the girls, was "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers! Good song but hardly a dancing favourite!

No problem, I Googled it because I didn't have a clue how to spell it either, but knew it wasn't phenomenon.

A Grotbags look a like jumped on me for the last dance once and the DJ played the longest rendition of Careless Whisper ever. I swear it went on for about 15 minutes  :veryangry

I just can't pretend no more, I keep runnin' out of lies
Lovin' you is killin' me inside
Everytime I find the words to end it, something in your eyes won't let it
Shandi, tonight must last us forever, forever we say goodnight and go home
But you know me very well, and I know you, you can't tell me goodnight
(say goodnight)
We been holding on so tight, we're afraid to let it go
Shake it loose, we both could use the ride
Here's another mess I got myself in, and when you touch me you ain't helpin'
chorus - say goodnight when we should say goodbye (say goodbye)
(Shandi, Shandi) Tonight must last us forever and ever
Forever we say goodnight and go home
Shandi, Shandi, tonight must last us forever
got you with this one Baloo !!!

When I last went to Kolidascope (spelling probally wrong), they played Daydream Believer as the last song.
It was perfect on that occasion, as there was only about 30 people left in the club, so we all got in a circle and danced in and out of it.
What a quality night that was!

From my brief days down at Rawnsleys and the Elephant Bar, I found 'Goodnight' off the White Album was a good ••••-off song, if that's what you mean. However, I did once get a good reaction to playing 'Town Without Pity' by Gene Pitney as a finale. Otherwise, my arch nemesis (Baron Greenback, no less) used to swear by 'Hey Jude'.

One of the old Northampton clubs I used to frequent in my wild and misspent youth always finished with Song 2, followed by Smells like Teen Sprit and the last song was Ace of Spades.
Nuff elbows flying into my face.
Don't really have a favourite any song can sound good as the last one but as I suppose it's the time of night where everyones most lashed up it should be something uplifting yet cheesy and mainstream enough so that everyone knows the lyrics to. New York, New York is good as is Daydream Believer though I remember one place where Always look on the Bright Side of Life polished the evening off and that went down suprisingly well.

"Bring me sunshine" once the lights have come up and everyone starts thinking about their coats and heading off is a good way to sign off

My favourite for last song has always been resurrection, but not cut short!
Failing that any Belle and Sebastian would do nicely!

As a mobile DJ of long standing, I have had several 'trademark' last song records over the years... but hang on 'cos there's two sorts of last song: one you play as a serious track, and the another as a runout track at low volume to clear the place...
So there's actually two here, the runout track is in brackets
For mainstream gigs:
1980-84 You'll never walk alone - G&PM (Oh Superman)
1984-88 You've lost that lovin feeling - RB (Waltzing Matilda by Rolf Harris - bizarrely the Black Sheep Bar in Croydon use the exact same track now!)
1988-94 New York, New York - Frankie (still Rolfie, but Two little boys!)
1994-98 Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles (Stairway to Heaven- yup Rolf again)
1998 to date I've had the time of my life (J'taime by Judge Dread)
If I'm doing one of my punk/indie nites then one of:
Good riddance - Green Day
Do you remember the first time - Pulp
GI Blues - Carter USM
(Runout: Who killed Bambi?)
If I'm doing old biddies then
The Last Waltz (no runout 'cos it confuses the old dear: "Ooh is he still playing?")
Xmas do's:
Band Aid (White Xmas)
Punky Xmas Do's:
Daddy Xmas - WTDN (White Xmas by SLF)
And finally Palace do's:
Glad all over (Where's Joyce?)
Bet you wished you'd never asked now...
