The license for Glastonbury 2003 has been granted for 27th, 28th and 29th June (gates open Wed. 25th 09:00), the tickets are expected to be about £100 and go on sale in the next couple of weeks.
Last year was brilliant, the crowds were well down and weather was back. So come on, anyone who promises themselves to go every year but never seems to quite get there - make 2003 the one :)

I'm definitely up for it this year. Have been to V and to T in the Park, but not Glastonbury. I heard rumours that REM and Radiohead are headlining? Anyone else heard anything?

They don't announce the bands until a few days before but REM have confirmed the Friday on their own website. Here's a list of current rumours... this will grow a lot over the next few weeks hehe...

Hmmmm Glastonbury kin' fantastic, been twice, but not for 6 years now and now that im 33 part of me feels like Im too old, can I handle 4 days of all day alcohol/narcotics mayhem with the reality check of the bogs to bring me back down ? Not sure, is however, without doubt, the best festival EVER.

REM are self-confirmed.
Radiohead are rumoured to play the Saturday by just about everyone, and no-one else has been suggested as a Saturday headliner, so it does sound quite likely.
I believe, in a break with tradition, some of the line-up will be announced when the tickets go on sale in a couple of weeks.
I'll be there with bells on if REM and Radiohead play, they're my 2 favourite bands, even if I have to go on my own! I just need to find some bells.....

In my humble experience... people always put them off 'for a few days' then say 'oh no they are all sold out and I really was going to go this year'. And when it comes to how many friends are going - adopt the unilateral approach, 'I've got mine - here's the phone number for bookings if you want to come.

The "pre-sale" are sold out, the full lot go on sale when the line-up is announced, which I believe will be next week.
Funny what you said about the Manics at Glastonbury, I also heard Radiohead might play at Move in Manchester. If that happens, the 3 headliners at Glastonbury (REM, Radiohead, Manics) will all be at Move as well.
Yep, they had a few thousand tickets on sale to those who wanted to book early, but they've sold out now. I guess you'll have to wait until they go on general sale to get yours.

Sorry but tickets for Glastonbury 2003 are now completely sold out. If you purchased your ticket from Aloud.com look out for your information-packed email newsletters. We'll also be updating www.aloud.com/glastonbury with the latest news as it happens--Aloud.com is more than a booking service.
We apologise if you experienced any difficulty in booking Glastonbury tickets either online or by phone. We took every step we could to boost capacity and we're ultimately able to service 10,000 requests per minute. Tickets for the festival have sold out in record time this year.

Glastonbury 'sells out'
Tickets for this year's Glastonbury Festival have sold out in just 24 hours.
More than 100,000 tickets, costing £105 each, were taken up in record time after going on sale at 0900 BST on Monday.
A spokesperson for Glastonbury Festivals told News Online: "It appears that all the tickets have gone.
"We are still processing the information."
Radiohead
A spokesperson for Shepton Mallet tourist office, which is one of the outlets selling the tickets, said: "It is a bit unusual to sell out so quickly but everyone knows what a fantastic event it is.
"We have had people from all over the country ringing up desperate for tickets."
Last year, tickets took several months to sell out.
The music festival was initially refused a licence because of concerns about crime and environmental damage.
Organisers, who have confirmed REM and Radiohead will play, promised to improve security on the site and the local area - and the application was approved.
Another condition of approving the licence was that organisers restricted the number of tickets to 112,500.
The festival runs from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June, with the gates opening at 0900 BST on Wednesday 25.

Radiohead's website had a 500 ticket allocation which was going to go on sale an un unspecified time, "when our lunches have settled", I was on there refreshing the page from 11.50 until 2.10 when they finally went on sale, luckily I got one though (£114!). I don't think the limit on my credit card would've extended to buying more tickets than 1, unfortunately.
One bloke on there tried to order 4 tickets and they said they only had 3 left! Probably the last person in the country to get any.

All tickets for this years Glastonbury Festival have now sold out!
Without the line-up being revealed, 112,500 tickets sold in just 24 hours - a record time!!!
Michael Eavis wasn't available for give a nice quote about how pleased he is to have sold the tickets so quickly, but of course the organisers are pleased that their event has such fantastic support.
With the very high security around the site and area - increased yet again over last year - there is no chance of entry without a ticket. If you don't have a ticket, please stay away.
And if you are attending DON'T PISS IN THE HEDGES - else they'll be no festival next year!
Now it's a 3 month wait until the best party on the planet.
Bring it on!!!

If it's an April Fools Joke, then Michael Eavis, and all the ticketing sites and news agency-type places would have to be in on it. I thought that at first but now I'm sure it's real, somehow.
I was flabbergasted that it could have sold out so fast, especially since (as I said above) it took a few weeks last year- REM's gig in Manchester isn't selling that fast so maybe Radiohead are the big attraction?
It's not impossible to sell that many tickets, Eminem sold out gig at Milton Keynes (60,000 capacity) in about 15 minutes, didn't he?
I'm more inclined to doubt it because I can't believe that many people would be organised to buy their tickets on the first day, if I doubt it at all.

Ridiculous prices, it had already started before I got hold of mine, I'm really glad that I did, now. £500-600 for a pair seems to be the going rate, one guy was doing Buy It Now at £199 each, they're probably all gone now!

Tried getting a couple of tickets from aloud.com yesterday after work and the website said they had all gone. Couldn't get through on the phone and was about to give it up as a bad lot thinking I'd try later - after all 100,000 aren't going to sell in less than a day are they?
Then managed to bag a brace online from NME.com. Hurrah. Now what's the betting there has been an almighty kok up and they don't turn up.
(Tempting to pass on at £600 for a pair tho' - can't see anyone in their right mind paying that)

Glastonbury touts will not be sent tickets as prices hit £400
Tania Branigan
Thursday April 3, 2003
The Guardian
Glastonbury fans are paying more than £400 each for £105 tickets to this year's festival, which were sold out within 24 hours. But they were warned by the festival's founder, Michael Eavis, yesterday that they will waste their money if they buy overpriced tickets from touts.
Angered by attempts to cash in on the event, the profits from which go to charity, he said he would not release tickets to people who were trying to resell them.
All 112,500 tickets for the June event sold out within 24 hours of their release on Monday: last year it took more than 10 weeks to sell them all. But within hours scores of tickets were on offer on the internet auction site Ebay. By yesterday they were changing hands for more than £800 a pair.
Mr Eavis, who holds the festival on his farm in Pilton, Somerset, said the organisers were monitoring auction sites and would refuse to issue any tickets which had been booked and then offered for resale.
"We have emailed all the people offering tickets for sale, telling them they won't get them because they are non-transferable," he said.
Having worked hard to keep the event affordable, he was disappointed that people had tried to make a quick profit.
"I'm obviously pleased that people think we're valuable and want to come. A lifetime's work has gone into this and it pleases me that the tickets sold out within 24 hours.
"But it's very sad, when we should be celebrating, to see that dark cloud on the horizon.
"To be honest it's not worth £400. It's worth £105. In the past people who have bought these tickets expect flush loos everywhere. We don't want people expecting a five-star campsite and if they're paying fancy money they'll be disappointed with the facilities."
People who had bought tickets for their own use but were unable to go could sell them back for the full value.
Mr Eavis said many buyers might have snapped up tickets because they feared it would be the last festival. Mendip district council initially refused it an entertainment licence, but agreed to a revised application after the organisers promised to increase the security measures.
Radiohead, R.E.M. and Moby are headlining the festival, which is sponsored by the Guardian.
:o Fair play to Michael Eavis..............:p

There was a petition last year all to do with them showing the World Cup final on site, and even though I wasn't going I still thought people had a right to see it (especially as England might have been involved at that stage), so i signed it with "Why must Michael Beavers always live up to his name by being such a cϊnt? SHOW THE FOOTBALL" :D Fair play to him on this issue, though despite warnings, the Radiohead tickets from a few weeks ago are still making silly money on there, so I will be interested to see if these people really do lose their tickets.

This business of Eavis blocking touts from selling tickets has got to be a load of old wank. How could he equate someones Ebay username with a visa card name and address that the tickets are being sent to? And he is trying to stop Ebay selling them - but surely that's how they make their money? If they have sold all their tickets then they should be happy with that and leave it be.
There are probably loads of opportunities to get into Glastonbury for FREE if you are prepared to do a bit of work. I would try 'The Workers Beer Company' and do a couple of shifts pulling pints if I didn't already have a ticket ;) or you could try the festival organisers for stewarding jobs around the site etc.

Er....I'm going to see REM at Brixton on Wednesday night, is that a good enough excuse? Seeing one of my favourite bands twice in three days is more important to me than an extra day of the "festival atmosphere", whatever that is :)

I should be camping with a friend, with any luck she'll have saved me a space near her tent. I've been told you can arrive on Thursday without any serious trouble, it just means you won't be in the number 1 location.

That's about right, I allways go down early on Wednesday with an advance party to set up the tent village for about 30 of us, many of whom are playing 5 a side on Wednesday night so tend to arrive about 1am Thursday morning.
You'll be OK on Thursday, the real nutters are the ones who turn up just as the music starts on Friday!

I camped in my brothers boss's garden last year. It was great - hot showers, no pikeys shouting & screaming at each other all night, cooked brekkie from his missus. The only problem was running the gauntlet of angry scousers outside & the equally angry riot police.

VIVA LOST VAGUENESS
Last year I spent a lot of time in the 'weird beard' field... with the Lost Vagueness people doing their thing... I thought it got a bit 'elite' and they would change it this year but it seems they are following a similar formulae...
I have foggy memories of Sunday night going through about 4 tents all connected about 4 in the morning... I was just about to hit a massive champagne bar full of people in tux's and ball gowns playing poker and roulette and black jack etc. when a 7 foot zombie grabbed me and said 'you're not dressed'. So I made the long journey back to the paupers bar (which during the day was a roller disco) and watched a romanian folk troupe blast us out of our heads until about 7 in the morning while we drank tequilla and champers slammers... and the can can girls popped up at random intervals showing lots of enthusiasm.
Here's what efestivals.co.uk say... In 2003 the field willl include: a Ballroom, a Casino, a Church , a Mosque, a big Outdoor Stage, a Trailer Park, a mutated robots area, a fully animated Freakshow, Joe Strummers Corner, a xxx caberet, a full can can troupe, Ballroom Dancing lessons, a full tailored suit hire, and more. And people ask me what 'main stage' bands I saw????

Probably easiest to post a link since there's a lot of bands:
http://www.q4music.com/nav?page=q4music.now.feature&fixture_news=407645
I've never been to one of these things for anything but the music, is all this other stuff worthwhile as well?
Just noticed the setlists are a bit longer than at Reading- should be good!
Del Gland
30-05-2003, 09:29 AM
Having seen the list I am glad I am going to Reading instead. Sure, there is a very impressive list of bands, but the scheduling is dire. A great example is the Friday clash of Royksopp and Lemon Jelly and neither of them are even in the Dance Tent.
I can only assume that people go for the "vibe" and are not seriously bothereed about the music. I suppose this is why it probably sells out so quickly.
RichieG
30-05-2003, 11:36 AM
The music is largely irrelevant to me at Glastonbury, as long as there is some I don't care.
The 'vibe' as you put it has to be experienced to be understood. It is 5 days in heaven.
I've never done glasto before but if it's anything like Reading, bands don't necessarily clash if they are in the same order of play on different stages, with the dance and main stages finishing later. Another odd clash, similar to the one you mentioned is Tricky and Moby.
Which leads me on to something else. Tricky's first album was released in 1995, and Death in Vega's in 1997. Hardly makes them new bands does it?!?

John Cale's on the New stage and hes been doing solo stuff since the 70s.
I have to say this line-up is the best I've ever seen for a festival. Shame I'm doing Workers' Beer so I wont be able to see all of them.
The only other glastos I've been to were 97 & 98 - the 2 muddiest of all time so I hope my presence wont be a bad omen.

15 days to go!!
And can I just outline once more for all you weird guys talking about the music.......it doesn't matter, it's Glastonbury, the biggest party of the year.
The thing that really winds me up about V & Reading is the way they usher you out of the stage areas within about 20 minutes of the bands finishing and there's not realy anything left to do...........wheras at Glastas the party really does go on until dawn every night! I love watching the fire dancers at the stone circle for hours and then chilling while the bongo players "drum in" the sunrise......the cheer that goes up when the sun rises at Glastonbury is something so amazingly special, the first time I thought it was the chemicals I was on, but having given those up these days I was able to confirm last year that it makes your spine go all tingly even if your straight(ish)

nothing to do at reading after the bands have finished?
pfft bollocks!
RichieG
10-06-2003, 12:24 PM
Sorry, I was basing my comments on having been to V where they usher you out of the main areas and back to the camp sites, where is little to do (apart from sit round with 'yer mates getting hammered!) no sound systems that go on all night etc. etc.
Some mates told me Reading was similar, but obviously not!
Still, I hold to the belief that unless there specific bands playing that you really must see, Glastonbury is much better value!
Each to his own etc. etc.
Twyford Bee
10-06-2003, 12:59 PM
Well you still get ushered out at Reading, so from that point of view it's the same. I've never done anything much after the music finishes.
RichieG
10-06-2003, 02:29 PM
Plan to! Camp half way up Pennards Hill, which is definately the best area as you're close to the Other Stage and The Glade without being too close to the Pyramid and Dance Tent (which is the worst area for crime) And you're a 5 minute walk from the night time festivities at the Stone Circle (or Sacred Space as it's officially called).
The Glasto mating calls of people trying to trade drugs are quite amusing up there......you get people just wandering round after midnight shouting "skunk for acid" "anyone got any mushrooms" etc. etc. which is quite surreal really!
Oh, and I didn't really mean it about the bands, obviously they're important.......it's just difficult to get across to the Glasto virgin what a small percentage of the total experience they really are!
Twyford Bee
10-06-2003, 02:39 PM

does this mean its going to be really f*ing noisy whilst I'm trying to sleep ? Sorry if it sounds like I'm missing the Glastonbury spirit, but I remember a couple of years ago when you had w@nkers shouting & screaming at each other all night which is not what you need after a day chilling in the sun, getting rat arsed and jumping around to bands when you need some zzz's so you can do the same the next day.

If you really do want to try the family field, this map should help you find it, and you will want to make sure you're in the East car park. You end up in the East car park if you go down the A303, the only way to get into the West car park is to approach from the Glastonbury side of the festival (this is my approach as it's a shorter walk to Pennards Hill camping ground).

Thanks again for the advice. No worries about meeting up - it can be hard work which isn't really the point is it ? I'd like to meet excowboy if he is dishing out the free beers though !
When I last camped at Glastonbury I remember trying to sleep around 2am in the morning and some wit yelled from his tent "I'm John Doe" this was followed shortly afterwards by another tent "No, I'm John Doe". This went on for about an hour and a half. It was pretty funny, but when you get to my age and you've been caning it all day, you need your beauty sleep.

Too right, he was there last year on the "Other Stage" and he was pretty poor, he certainly didn't hold our attention for longer than about 15mins before we wandered off to find something more interesting!
Thankfully he clashes with The Doves, Buena Vista Social Club, The Streets, Tricky, System 7, Zion Train etc. all of whom I'd rather see to round off the weekend than Moby!

Not sure if I'll watch Moby Or Doves, I've seen Doves twice and not given them my full attention either time, I saw them support Travis at Wembley last year and didn't really give them my full attention because I was so far away, then they were at V2002 but I'd been standing up watching other hands for about 3-4 hours at the time so I used the opportnity to sit down near the back and give my legs a rest.
I quite like Moby though I'm really surprised he's headlining above the Manics. Someone said to me the other day "You've got to be careful what you say around Moby in case he adds adds a load of synths to it and the voice of a 40's soul singer, then sells the end result to McDonalds for an ad" :p

I saw Moby's set last year and at one point he took off his shirt, stood on his keyboard and faced the crowd in a christ like pose (arms out looking to the sky) and just stayed there until the crowd starting booing and shouting for him to get on with it. Yeah its funny that 1997 was dubbed the year of the mud but in 98 we dreamt of the sun kissed fields of the year before.

It was hard to see the mud in 98 because of the foot of dirty water covering it.

I think we'll be okay, even if it rains I reckon we should get away with the odd light shower rather than a serious deluge, in which case in might even be quite refreshing!
I only started going in 2000, so I've not had a proper mudbath yet, and I'm not keen on finding out all about it!

No chance at all, the fence is now steel and about 15ft high, with loads of security on all the roads approaching the festival, you'd be lucky to even get as far as the car park this year!
Mike Eavis used to actively encourage people to come without tickets, but as the festival grew in popularity it became unmanageable - I was there in 2000 when there were about 250,000 on site, and it was bl**dy dangerous, last year was better, about 150,000 - you could move around for starters!
Some people moan that the "spirit" of the festival is not the same without the freeloaders, but I would maintain that it is better - less thieving scouse wan**rs for starters!!

Was ringing round ticket agencys early last week. Taken aback by most of the quotes (often £300, absolute cheapest £235.) Last agency I dialled, the chap on the other end said that his firm weren't selling them, but he said he may be able to help as a friend of his had purchased 2 & now couldn't make it. He took my number & rang back a while later quoting a very reasonable price for the pair. Only problem being that I only wanted 1. It was at this point that A Wooden Fish On Wheels posted that he may know of a spare, if anyone's interested.
There were no immediate takers so I had to ring the bloke back & tell him thanks, but no thanks. As luck would have it the bloke was heading to Paris the next morning, not returning 'til Saturday, thus giving me a little more time to find another taker. Eventually Wooden Fish found an interested party (not through this site) so he edited the post on this thread to say 'no longer relevant' & I tried to contact the bloke to say I'd have the tickets.
To my frustration, his phone was going straight to answerphone all weekend & I began to fear the worst. Eventually got through mid-morning on Monday & arranged to collect the tickets yesterday afternoon. Had to trek over to Greenwich, but it was a small price to pay.
Wooden Fish & co. are already on the way down, but as Ive got tickets to Wimbledon today, I'll be heading down by train, alone, tomorrow.
Bring it on!!

I guess I must be the first back then. It was absolutely bloody fantastic. I've been an avid gig goer for more years than I care to remember and I'm struggling to think of a better gig than Radiohead on the Saturday night. Other highlights for me were The Libertines, Kings of Leon, Beth Orton. The Thrills were pretty cool as well.
Minor disappointments - The Flaming Lips were too high up the bill and are more suited to a smaller audience who know their stuff. I really like them, but most of the crowd just didn't get it and when he started smearing blood over himself and saying something about the life of christ most people switched off.
Lemon Jelly - love the album, but didn't really work live.
Welsh w@nkers in the tent next to us. Shouting at each other until 4am and then starting again at 7am - nice one lads.
Classy scouse bird in the tent behind us taking a piss outside our tent after being woken by aforementioned Welsh tossers.
These gripes were minor though. It was a a really chilled weekend and I'd recommend everyone to go next year if you can get a ticket.

Went to Calcot Savacente to pick up the 4.50pm coach straight there on Thursday afternoon, services supposed to run every 90 mins, waited and waited and waited, then called them at 6.35pm to ask why there'd been no coaches and they said they would send the Victoria-Heathrow-Glasto coach that was about to leave London in our direction to pick us up, but that that wouldn't be until at least 8pm. Finally got on that at about 8.25, the 4.50, 6.20 and 7.50 departures never existed to us depsite me being booked on the first one- thanks a bunch, National Express :veryangry We also had to stop for 45 minutes after we'd been on the road for 10 minutes so the driver could have his rest break, but the law is the law and that didn't bother me that much. However, it meant I didn't arrive on site until almost midnight, luckily my friends had pitched a 1 man 'decoy tent' to fill the space where I was going to put my tent, so I slept in that for the first night.
Spent Friday morning putting up my proper tent, so I missed The Darkness, apparently they did a cover version of Street Spirit. Also missed out on getting a 'Q Daily', the festival newspaper, for the same reason, though I eventually found one yesterday so I can now treasure them as collector's items :) We could hear the Pyramid Stage from where we were camped in Michael's Mead though it sounded a lot more echoey than it should have. The first band I saw were The Buffseeds in the New Bands tent, reminded me of Travis a bit, can't say that they looked like headliners of the future but they were OK for a bit of peaceful music. Gave Athlete a miss as I'll be seeing them at Move in 2 weeks, I followed what my friend wanted to do, without any specific plan of my own, and so saw Tom McCrae (Other Stage) before shuffling back to my tent for a while. I went and watched The Music with some other people that we were camped with, they stepped in at the last minute to replace Zwan, I actually thought they came across quite a bit better live than on CD, the funky beats are well suited to jiggling around with beer in hand! Can't say I'll be rushing out to buy their album just yet, though.
I resisted the temptation of Electric 6 in order to see Suede for the 3rd time, I thought they reeled off their hits quite nicely, the crowd reaction around me was a lot more positive than it appeared on TV. Good to hear stuff from their first album in the mix now as well, Metal Mickey and Animal Nitrate were played. Listened to David Gray from the campsite, I don't mind him but everyone else seemed to, one guy said he reckoned his set must have had at least 60 songs on it. Then headed back down for REM who played a great setlist, it often felt like I was the only one who knew some of the songs (Begin the Begin, Fall on me, Finest Worksong), but there was a good mixture of old and new, and as at Brixton on Wednesday night (see the gigs thread for review), 3 new songs were played. I didn't think It's The End Of The World As We Know It was played quite as well as it appeared on TV in 99, throwing the mic into the crowd seemed to make the ending worse rather than better!
Saw Jools Holland and his boogie-woogie stylings on Saturday lunchtime, the biggest let-down for me were the Polyphonic Spree, everyone else said they were one of the best bands of the weekend, I'd never heard any of their stuff before and I thought they were awful, most of their stuff sounded like nursery rhymes to me. My friends spent ages making a multi-coloured flag out of old cardigans for it as well!
Listened to Turin Brakes while eating dinner and then watched Supergrass for the 4th time without ever going to a Supergrass gig or even really being much of a fan of them, they did all the usual stuff. My friends and I pushed to the front area for The Flaming Lips (they wanted to see them, I was more interested in what was up next!), I thought they put on a very good live show (I loved the infomercial "Don't Snort Your Own Brain"!), again I'm not sure if I'd want to listen to their music regularly but the show was entertaining and so worth watching. By then the anticipation for Radiohead was almost killing me (also my 4th time of seeing them), and I don't think I was the only one, so it wasn't that surprising that the crowd were really up for There There when it came on! We moved back about 4 rows before 2+2=5 (I guessed that that would be next) because the pressure had already been quite bad for the There There and so I though the "paying attention" bit would be even worse. However it calmed down quite a bit after that, even Just wasn't as hectic as the first 2 songs were. It was a great set and I was really glad they did Lucky amongst all the usual ones, and Climbing Up The Walls (only got into that recently, compared with other OK Computer tracks), but I wish they wouldn't play The Gloaming above other new songs, its live performance does nothing for me at all especially with Myxomatosis (amongst others) not played. I loved the performance of Karma Police with extra choruses on the end, but I have to be really picky and say that Street Spirit isn't my favourite song and I'd have much preferred it if they'd finished with How To Dissapear or Fake Plastic trees (which had already been played), though I can appreciate that most people wouldn't agree with that and so it wasn't a bad choice for them to make.
On Sunday I discovered that I'd only seen a small bit of the site up to that point, so I wandered from about 2.30 till 5.30 all around the South end of the site, signed a few petitions and looked at all the crazy hippy relevry, I meant to pop back to the acoustic tent for Beth Gibbons but I was exhausted and sunburnt by that stage so I gace that a miss, and the first band of the day that I actually saw were Feeder, having heard a few snippetts of Sugababes and Macy gray beforehand. I went back to the Other Stage for the end of the night to see Sigur Ros, who were far more interesting live than I imagined they would be, and held the attention of the crows much better than I expected. For those who don't know who they are, they're an Icelandic group who write music with little or no words, their latest album has 8 untitled songs and all vocals are just made up vocals with no meaning. Their songs also average about 7 minutes in length but they're very good tunes, the crowd were mainly drawn in by the huge climax that most of the songs have. The latest album, ( ), got a good airing.
Headliners were Doves on the Other Stage (turned down a 4th chance to see the Manics and a 1st chance to see Moby, I'll have to look on my videos to see what they did), they put on a very good show with some interesting backdrops, e.g. New York had one that finished with the Hindenberg disaster. Pounding and Words were very enjoyable and There Goes The fear went down a treat, they finished with a dance track from their "sub sub" days.
Packed up my stuff this morning and got a coach at 12.15, and that was about that.
Overall I'd say it was a really good experience, though that was helped by the fact that there were so many bands on that I wanted to see, if next year's line up is, as rumoured already, Prince, Oasis and Paul McCartney, then I think I'll be saying no thanks and staying at home. There's a hell of a lot to do on site and I may have been guilty of neglecting some areas. The Kidz Field looked like a real blast, I would have no hesitation taking young kids along in the future if I had some. Also I think I'd rather go with a group of people that I know, this year I knew one person and then knew everyone else through that person and people that they knew and so on. I know that this means it's a good way to meet new people, and I did, but it would have been nice to have more than one person to ring up and meet up with if I'd wanted to. A few of our neigbourts woke everyone up moaning (with good reason) about the smell of the far distant toilet,s but it was 7.15am and we didn't appreicate it much.
Phew, that was hard work.

After such a fantastic 4 days (I went down there on Thursday morning) I think I will make it a permanent fixture in my calender.
I agree with you about Radiohead, but I thought the Flaming Lips were fantastic too, even if it did go over some people's heads. Other highlights for me were Idlewild, I Am Kloot, MEW, REM, Beth Orton, The Darkness (who were show steelers), Brendan Burns and Ross Noble in the comedy tent too.

What a fantastic weekend! Though I'm somewhat confused at the voicemail messages I found on my mobile from the Biggus Mickus Malaga Choir when I returned.
Best band for me has to have been the Polyphonic Spree. I watched the tv coverage last night and the little snippet the poxy BBC showed did not do them any justice at all.
Also, just a mention of the Hare Krishnas. These guys turn up at the festival every year and provide free food and shelter to anyone who has none for whatever reason. And after the bands had gone off their tent eas rocking with people intent on having a good time. It's no coincidence that thew "Jesus Army" tent was more or less empty for the whole duration whereas the Krishnas tent was always busy. Go to the Krishnas and you get free food and a singalong. Go to the Jesus Army and you get a bunch of sanctumonious telling you that you're living your life wrongly and that you're evil. THe ridicule the Hare Krishnas suffer from the masses is misplaced and would be better off directed at the Christian bast@rds.

Definitely an amazing festival, although a different crowd from when i've been before - not the random element of previous years which I missed. The fact that the sugababes seemed to get the biggest crowd of the event is a worrying development.
Best band for me was the flaming lips - "Do you realise" was perfect for that time of day & the show was admirably different from the usual blandness. Close behind that was Tricky, whose set was far too short because of technical problems, but still sharp despite not uncluding any songs from his first two albums. The Delgados also only did new stuff and were still tremendous, and Mogwai did a great set at 4pm on the pyramid stage which didn't attract many punters but worked for me big time.
I also got to see Roddy Frame on a break from work - hes got a great voice and it really worked in the acoustic stage. Jimmy Cliff was good as well, as were the Thrills, De la Soul and the Inspiral Carpets. Liked the fringe bits as well, particularly the women in drag on lawnmowers with pipes.
I thought the radiohead set was okay but not as intense as 97 - They seeemed to be goind through the motions. I was disappointed they didnt play "pyramid song" or "Knives out" as well. I was impressed with the manics tho, If you tolerate this... and motorcyle emptiness got me shouting back at the stage, and they also twice as many flags as all the other bands of the weekend put together which has to be a good thing.

My weekend got off to a bad start. I arrived at Paddington station on Thursday, in good time for the 14:35 train direct to Castle Cary. To my astonishment I wasn't allowed on due to the train already being full. The next direct train was 2 hours later. Waiting for it was not an option. Instead I boarded a train to Bath, knowing that I could get to Castle Cary that way instead. On the platform at Bath, there were hundreds of festival goers, all with rucksacks, tents, sleeping-bags, etc. I said a prayer for a large empty train. Instead I got a 2 carriage job that was already pretty full. Managed to squeeze on & consoled myself with the fact that at least the weather was good. Just as the train pulled in at Castle Cary the heavens opened! Luckily the rain had ceased by the time the shuttle bus service reached the festival gates. The queueing probably took about an hour, but it felt a lot longer.
When I finally made it into the site, I was reflecting on all the time, effort & money it had taken to get this far & thinking, 'This'd better be good?!' Luckily I wasn't disappointed.
I'd decided to go to Glastonbury, not to see any specific bands, but because I'd heard so many good things about the festival itself. Well the sun shone, the beer flowed, the music was superb & even the toilets were nowhere near as bad as I'd been lead to believe.
Excessive day-time drinking caused me to miss Friday's bands, but on Saturday & Sunday I saw John Ottway, The Thrills, Polyphonic Spree, Radiohead, Yes, Cerys Matthews, Dave Gahan, Manic Street Preachers & The Streets. The Manics were good but Radiohead were definitely the highlight of the weekend. Half an hour before they were due on it seemed like the whole festival was heading for the Pyramid stage. I arrived 15 minutes before they came on & did well to get a spot roughly 50 metres from the front. There was such a sense of expectancy over the whole crowd & the band didn't let anybody down. Being part of that crowd for the hour & a half or so that they were on stage was a fantastic experience which made all the aggravation getting there worthwhile.
If anyone reading this hasn't been before, I thoroughly recommend giving it a try. I'll certainly be going again next year.:p

Only rained for the odd hour here and there. Mostly it was blazing sunshine!

As I previously said, I thought the Polyphonic Spree were very poor, sounded like nursery rhymes to me. Flaming Lips were happy and smiley in a much better way, for me.

Have to agree to disagree there I guess. Billy Bragg was pretty cool too.

Musically, I can't remember a better weekend in my life!
Highlights included REM, Radiohead, Moby, Idlewild, Mew, Cooper Temple Clause, Electric 6, Nada Surf, Supergrass, Polyphonic Spree, The Flaming Lips, Interpol and The Darkness.
Only disappointments were Feeder, Suede, and the non-appearance of Bright Eyes. Worst act of the weekend goes to The Wrapture - their stupidly high ranking on the Other stage made me go and watch them for some reason! Complete crap. Royksopp and Mogwai were pretty dull but I wasn't expecting much from them.
However, the most disappointing aspect was the lack of atmosphere after the acts had finished. If you don't want to go to a DJ set (and quite frankly I reckon 14 hours music is enough for anyone), there's nothing to do around the campsites as most people go to sleep stupidly early!!! We were even told off for "talking " at 4 oclock in the morning by one of our neighbours. Reading is SOOO much better in this way.
However, I think I will strongly consider going next year, unless Oasis headline...

My friends were disapointed about the yes-no-yes-no likelihood of Bright Eyes appearing, especially when the Q Daily made a completely different schedule for that stage with them on, which was then totally ignored in favour of the original one on the programme.
Though there were about 10 of us in our "circle", I only knew 1 other person, who in tern only knew 2 others, so most of us had plenty to ask one another. Being all about the same age we could talk about university and stuff, and so we talked until past 2 every night, could probably have gone on longer with more flares or someone with a guitar to play. I don't know what the organised activities were like at night, maybe they expect you to improvise.
I disagree, at Reading there is NO organised activities at night, that means people DO improvise, have camp fires, get pissed have have a good time. At Glastonbury there seems to be too many other things going on and people miss out on the fun of camping. Also there are too many boring old people ;) . Hopefully next year's ticketing scheme will change that a little!

Next year come and have a go with us ;)

I can only conclude you were at some other Glastonbury........at the one near Pilton in Somerset there was absolutely all sorts going on until way after dawn every night, if you do come back next year, you should check out in particular the Lost Vagueness area and the Sacred Space. After the bands finish, the key at Glastonbury is that there is always something going on......you just have to be prepared to go and find it!

Glasto is 24 hours - there's masses going on, and if anyone tells you to be quiet at a festival, tell them to fck off.

Psychokiller - i reckon this (http://www.efestivals.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=9877&) must have been the 'lady' we saw, although it appears we only caught the end of the story.

what did you guys see? I got a text from my mate saying "just saw a lady sit down, get naked and w*nk until she was carried off by security" which i was a bit dubious about at first maybe... but it seems it all happened. What field was it in?

Me and the Judge just saw her being bundled into a security vehicle near the Pyramid stage.

Mind you... we did once see a bloke watching Suzanne Vega in front of the pyramid stage with his trousers and pants round his ankles... he knocking one out furiously.
