With all the music threads around at present, here's another,
I used to be a bit fanatical about collecting records, do any of you own/have owned any rare records, i have some that i bought just 'cos i liked them, now they are quite valuable.
Here's a few..
Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf, (12" red vinyl)
My Best Friends Girl - The Cars (7" picture disc)
Glastonbury Fayre - Various Artists (Triple album) 1 of only 250
Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden (picture disc)
Ace of Spades- Motorhead (Gold yinyl)
plus numerous Bootlegs by Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc

What have you got in your collections?

U2 - Out of Control 3-track 12inch single. I bought it when I was on holiday in Ireland in 1980 on recommendation from a cousin. Saw a programme about Bono the other night on BBC3 and they were talking about U2 early stuff and this record was featured. Only 1,000 were pressed and now worth about £500. Wouldn't sell it though.

I bought "On the Beach" - Neil Young (UK Original) for £30 in Manchester behind Aflecs Palace. Saw it for £100 in Beanos :-)

Bought Nirvana "Come as you are" 12 inch picture disc for 99p from Showells in West Wickham High St. That must be worth around £30 now.

Original issue of An Ideal For Living by Joy Division.
Don't know the value.
U2's Out Of Control EP I clearly remember being a record of the week in Record Mirror when it was only available on Irish import.

I have the rare record of scoring the quickest goal in the history of the Carshalton Little League. All of six seconds it took me. (Obviously I scored it when I was 10, not now  ).

I have a beatles bootleg "5 nights in a judo arena" it's never been played.

I also have lots of test pressings/promos of a buch of different stuff.

I just bought a "the hives" 7" single on ebay which only has 1000 copies worldwide and was pressed in Sweden...thats rare.

Guess it helps that I am manager of a second hand record store huh?;):D:p

I think the value of this is helped by the fact that Young has consistently refused to see it released on CD.

yup! just for 2 lines of lyrics in "revolution blues" he feels ashamed of.

can get it on bootleg cd though (on the beach+) with live bbc sessions stuck on the end although the cd has actually been recorded off the record!

still reckon that even £100 would be worth every penny though :p

Two early Prince Buster albums - last time I saw one of them for sale (2/3 years ago) it was up for £250.00 ... but it's all relative: no way would I sell it :)

I've got a bundle of old shellaque 72's. One of them is a particularly rare Stokowski performance of Beethoven's sixth symphony. Beautiful.

Good lad :D

That's not very rare though sadly, now his Photograph album (limited edition German compliation of early stuff) is worth an absolute bomb.

My prized possession is my Sex Pistols Great Rock & Rock Swindle 7" cover which was withdrawn from sale after one day after complaints from American Express...

Talking Heads Psychokiller ( ) 12" American first edition.

I used to have "Happy The Man" by Genesis but I sold it around 1981 for £90.

I have the Rolling Stones "Exile On Main St" NME Flexi single which must be worth a few bob.

I also have a fully signed copy of The Music's CD which is why I can never invite Baloo round!

Blue Suede Shoes - Elvis Presley on 78rpm

I don't know how rare these are as I've never really looked into their value or scarcity...

The Jam's Pop Art Poem flexidisc, which was given away free with the first issue of a short-lived magazine called the Hit. I've still got the mag somewhere too.

A white vinyl EP that came free as a limited edition with the Stranglers' Black and White album. It has their version of Walk On By and 'Tits'.

The reissue (from the late 70s) of the Ready Steady Who EP. I know the 60s original is quite rare.

I've also got quite a number of freebie singles and EPs which came with Sounds, NME or Malady Maker. I don't know whether they're collectable, there's a few 'name' bands on them.

I have the 6 vinyl boxset of NuYorican Soul, from 1996. Not very old but I imagine is worth a lot more now then when I came out.

All mint first editions and in plastic covers:

Numbered copy of The White Album – Beatles
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland
3D cover Their Satanic Majesties – The Stones (probably their worst album)
Hot Rats – Frank Zappa
Freak Out – Frank Zappa
Absolutley Free – Frank Zappa
I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die – Country Joe and The Fish

I did have originals of virtually all The Stones albums up to Let it Bleed but some c*** stole them during a house move years back and as I said before if I ever find out who, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.

You don’t steal people’s records! :(

Through djing for the last few years I've got loads of rare stuff (UK plus germany and Italy) but names would mean nothing I guess to some/most of you but within selected genres people would pay good money for them.

A few years ago my mate had a hardcore tune called 'Love of My Life' by Dougal, which was cheesy crap so one night (but may have been morning thinking about it!) we decided to put it in the oven to make a modern art/Blue Peter style ashtray. Then a couple of yeards later we walked into Wax City and there it was for £50! You should have seen my mates face, pure class!

Oh yeah my brothers got loads of the original Acid House tunes from 88/89 which are worth a fair bit too nowadays

It's funny that despite so much attention on rare records they are not really all that expensive at all with only a few being worth any serious dough. Compare that to the sums people will pay for some shitty old furniture or ugly porcelain (or a Simpsons toy ;)) - it doesn't make add up really.

I must go to Beano's - trouble is I haven't had a working 'deck' for years.

Someone once stole a Phil collins picture disc of Sussudio out of my Disco collection, I'd love to meet him/her and buy them a pint.

Saved me from ever having to play it again.

I have the original release of 'Kilimanjaro' by The Teardrop Explodes. It has a different cover (the band instead of the Africa pic) and doesn't include 'Reward'.

My copy of 'Blue Monday' has a silver inner cover, and I think this was only the case on the day of release (the original version, in 83). At the time I knew people who bought it only later that week and their copies' inner covers were black.

I've got the Evening with Wild Man Fischer album mentioned on the Obscure albums thread.

An ultra rare 7" promo of Blue Monday by New Order
Original releases of Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, Free Will, Pieces of a Man and The First Minute of a New Day by Gil Scott Heron
Canadian imports of Help and Revolver by the Beatles
A clear vinyl German import edition of Space Oddity by Bowie
Charlatans "Some Friendly" in a plastic sleeve
A copy of "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" by Japan with a mistake on the tracklisting

and loads more. I'm a bit of a geek like that I'm afraid :)

That's odd, I'm pretty sure mine is silver too, but I definately didn't buy it on day of release... several weeks later, in fact. I guess the shop must still have had its first day's stock there.

Didn't have a clue it was vaulable, so its battered to feck now :(

I've got that too! Didn't know it's a rarity.

Unfortunately my copy of God Save the Queen isn't on A&M. I could do with 4k right now, although 24k would be ideal.

That's because right thinking people have been systematically hunting it down and destroying it.

Beanos are well cheeky when giving cash for records.
You would have got more if you sold the records to them singularly as well.
