Two problems today
.
1. Being a 50% owner in the PC that Tak has been moaning about I was glad to hear from Tiny that they had replaced the modem, tested the PC and that it was running perfectly. Yesterday it turns back up, I set it up and go to connect to the Internet and........yep, same problem.

What happens is that the modem makes all the right noises, you connect to the start programe for various ISP's ( I have tried to register with 4 ) and then, after progressing through 1/4 parts of the registration process the screen suddenly goes blank before being replaced with a message saying that the page could not be opened and claiming that there is a DNS/explorer problem. (excately the same page that you get when the BBS has been down in the past ) In the past we have had similar problems with different PC's using the same telephone line. BT have visited our office three times and have put the 'gain' on the line to maximum and claim that it is NOT the line.

Any ideas gents ?

2. I also have another PC that is needs a new C drive fitting but is also not very well ie it will not boot up at all and needs looking at. Any ideas ? ( arussell, is this your sorta thang ? )

1. Take the PC to someone else's place (in a different area code so you are using a different phone exchange) and use their phone line. If it works OK there then it indicates your line is at fault. Has BT put a line splitter in? They do this to double the amount of lines available to a residence but it can cause connection problems. Does it only fail when doing an ISP registration or on all other sites? Do these sites use Java or JavaScript and are they enabled in your browser. Have you tried a different browser (Netscape/Opera/etc)?

2. Restore the data from backups. Let me guess, no backups right? In that case install a new disk and set the old one up as a non-booting slave device. Copy all the data across to the new one (you may need a tool like Nortons to help you recover data from it) then throw away the old disk. Implement a proper backup procedure.

3. To minimise these type of problems in the future buy a Mac http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

1. I'll put money on it being a line problem. Ring up, complain - ask them to do a more thorough line check. If i'm wrong i'll buy you a pint on Saturday!
