View Full Version : Snobbery on the BBS

I'm talking about some of the more established members appearing to ignore or not take seriously points made by less established and perhaps younger members of the BBS.
Not really talking from personal experience but having read through some of the threads today this snobbery is evident.

Agree/Disagree?

I sincerely hope it isn't true.

Please don't take this as further evidence in support of your theory, but I am transferring this thread to 'General Chit-Chat'.

What I really object to is threads being hijacked by stupid kids where nothing but immature crap is spouted.

Latvian Eagle and the barcadi-thing being the main culprits. Thirty or so stupid postings before we get back to the nitty gritty.

East - if you're gonna make accusations about people on the BBS please name names.

Ambiguity causes lots of arguments.

Funny thing,When I first came on the BBS I had a go at David Murry (a) about the same thing ( He was yawning at post's by member's)
And Chocky called me a donut which still hurts today !

And as for the Latvian Eagle and the barcadi-thing they just have to be reminded there is a chat room at the top of the page, thats all.

I think you have to go through a painful initiation ceremony before the old sweats give you a second glance. I believe it involves being stuck in a lift on a hot sweltering summer's day with Alan Smith, his psychiatrist, and a motivational Simon Jordan cassette.

I'm with Brett on this. I don't want to be pompous, but while I can put up with or ignore most things on the BBS what does get under my skin is kids using the BBS like a chatroom and ignoring even basic attempts at English spelling, grammar and syntax (Oh no - I'm sounding like Trolley now...)

Go away you horrible little oik and dont darken this forum again with your senseless comprehensive education, sauce bottle on the table, Carlton TV watching, Union membership, Council house dwelling, Kwik-save shopping opinions until you have reached at least 500 postings.

And even then do not speak unless spoken to first and address me as SIR !

Have to agree with Crate and Brett. One example-
"he'd proabably trip ova his linaghan shrine b4 the ball got there and leave kolinko alone my gosh, did he turn u down for a date or sumgfing?"

There is possibly a good point in there somewhere, but where do you start? Frankly I cannot be bothered. That is not snobbery I hope, just a reaction that plain English is the lingua franca on the Boards. When did Esperanto take over?
I should imagine anyone joining the BBS feels a bit exposed at first. I certainly did. I was(and still am) ignorant of some of the protocols. I made a basic silly statement on one of my first posts, but was gently educated, and I appreciated this.

Eagle of the East,

I once thought as you did but if you read the BBS for as long as I have you will come to notice that sometimes it can be justified. As Brett said, some threads do tend to be hijacked and wildly deviate from the topic in hand.
You have also got to remember that if anyone does come out with a pile of tosh spewing from their keyboard then it will get picked up on. But isn't that true in all areas of life? Believe me I once came out with an almighty gaffe with a thread I started once and was initially quite hurt by the response but looking back on it I was being a prat and deserved it.
And also quite a few of the "BBS Elite" know each other personally away from their computers so it's only likely that they will converse with each other a bit more. You really do have to make your voice heard (or words seen).

OK, lets put an end to this now. A fact of life is that in any established group of people be it in the workplace, pub, football team it is always going to be more difficult for newcomers to fit in as they will not have the inside knowledge of running gags, etiquitte ( or lack of it !), history ( nothing to do with who was substituted in 1953 ) and generally the rythm of the whole thing. Now when we organise a Friday night beer and Curry I always go out of my way to invite everybody. Plus it is common knowledge that there are always a large group of BBS's who meet up in the Cherries after home matches and numerous other pubs before games.

So come along and introduce yourself. It wont hurt and even if you decide we are a drunken bunch of pricks then at least you will know who you are calling a **** on here.

http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

Ps, there is a BBS Xmas lunch being discussed so standby for news soon. Just think, along with your office party this will be another occassion to make a complete arse of yourself.

I can't agree with that, I've only had one topic that has over 15 replies to it and that was well over 18 months ago, although the fact that I have not started too many topics on here may have something to do with it. Although I don't post new topics that often, many of those have had no replies.

Also Parker, the only difference between me and you is that I have posted more b***s*** on here than you have, and for a longer time period, nothing else. I don't think that makes me more correct, clever, wonderful, attractive or more interesting than newer members in the eyes (or monitors) of other BBS users.

I have a suggestion, why not go a little early to a home game, call in the Cherries, and meet some of the BBSers face to face. Perhaps then it will put a stop to it all, and you can come on here and gloat, and let everyone know these people had got it wrong.

Totally agree, although unfortunately this is a sad fact of life wherever you go. Ever started a new job when you've been treated like a non-person because all these self-important long-standing members think they know it all?
And while we're on the subject, why not add misogyny to the list of complaints. At Monday night's fans forum, men outnumbered women by about 40 to 1. It was dominated by a load of blokes whose seemed to add little to the debate apart from swearing copiously, heckling and repeating inane comments over and over. And that includes that stupid coach with the peroxide blonde hair. In spite of desperately wanting to ask a reasonably probing question in a calm way and without swearing, the atmosphere was just too intimidating.

Agree/Disagree?

Certainly a great deal of people do not take some of my comments seriously as they are of the misguided opinion that I am playing some sort of game,an allegation that I have refuted on several occasions. It really is beyond belief.People whom I have known for several years are quite astonished that I have been accused of such puerile antics and have advised me to refrain from posting on the BBS.Why should I ? My views and opinions are honest and of course I do not expect universal approval for them.People have deemed me odd and eccentric - That is fine by me - My good lady wife would be in total agreement ! I can accept such criticisms but I cannot accept people who go out of their way to conduct a smear campaign and accuse me of being a caricature and a fraud.I simply cannot accept this as I know it not to be true.
I have been involved in numerous spats on the BBS, particularly concerning politics, however at the end of the day, I have received support from several contributors and this is been most refreshing.

Warning. Waffle alert...

I see the BBS as similar to Selhurst Park. The different forums represent different parts of the ground to me. Within each part of the ground there are loud clever people, loud stupid people, softly spoken wise people, etc. Some people have sat in the same part of Selhurst for years and years. Others like to move around from match to match. The key to 'settling in' on this BBS is to find that part of the ground you feel most comfortable in (ie. the part where you like the people around you and you like what they're saying) and just take it from there. It was fortunate in that I basically disagreed with more or less everything an established and once prolific BBSer said, as did various other members, after a couple of decent BBS-aired arguments/debates with this person I started to receive a few PMs offering words of support etc. and struck up a couple of friendships with established BBSers.
The BBS is a bit like Palace itself to me, in that I tend to turn my back on it for sporadic periods, but always come back. Always.
I don't believe 'snobbery' exists here. Yes there are some extremely clever, well-educated members, but without them I doubt whether the thing would have survived as long as it has anyhow. Without them, and without the BBS I doubt whether the Supporters Trust would or could have been formed, and go on to play such an important part in ensuring the future of Crystal Palace FC.

I guess we all go through the same stages on the BBS,but also there is the "Is this just a wind up and its one of the regulars using a different name when you have only a few post's.
As for the stars and the names (Monkey etc) I have never been a fan, always thought they were a bit silly and as Ian said just proves we a'int got a life and we post more rubbish than anyone else (Me more than anyone).
Never could understand either the need to get 10/20 /30 people to reply to your post like its cool to get as many responses as possible, you made your point people have read it, whats the big deal ????
Snobbery ....No I don't think so, just a bunch of Palace fans that know each other a bit more than the new posters.
Stick around and post ,in a years time some one will be calling you a "snob".

What I do find "Snobby" is when some one puts there name at the bottom of there post !

Had this been in Palace Chat then I'd have to agree with you but as it isn't you really don't have a valid point do you?

Well I think you both are wearing laddered hosier today? Can Mat or TAK confirm this in the JV case?

Brother Eagle,

Look at the title of this Forum, it says "General Chit Chat" ... if you dislike this form of communication then don't visit the forum. Simple, really http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

I assume Regal Eagle that the above quoted from the Anyone go to school in Croydon thread couldn't possibly be you moronically using the BBS as a chat room?

Shame about the weather. Is it still raining where you are ?

James Varcoe

No it's stopped raining but it's still a trifle blowey, reminds of the time me, you and some other people on the BBS who have done a lot of posts were involved in the really funny incident when the wind was strong.

Well James, a response and a result. Only the 3rd in 80 postings.Proves the point I think.
I suppose then that all you have to do to get such a reply is to be rude!
This seems then like the point of BBS.
As for the comment on schools that was in response to the then question.
Didn't know you cared so much.
Also what do you lot do all day? Sit by your PCs waiting to have your little chats.
Me?..I have a life, what about you?

Siko, write your details of John Newnham to rockery@yahoo.co.uk and the membership secretary of the association will contact you. He has over 350 ex-pupils details. May help you to look up old friends (as the gynocologist said to the vicar).
When was I there?...to long ago to admit!

Brett

By your writing Regal I'd say you've left school for no more than four years.

Well thanks James.
It has all been worth while.
I do not have any chips on my shoulders and I think I do have a sense of humour, albeit not necessarily on the same wave length as yours.
I am laughing at the response to my comments which were made tongue in cheek, just to see if I got a reply and to see if there was any snobbery on BBS.
Who cares anyway. Life's too short.

you can't claim to be snobish unless you've got proof that you've been a snob dating back to the thirties in your house in Waddon,
we'll see whos being snobish!

Sorry SIKO it won't happen again!!

So sorry you feel that way Regal, as you yourself point out that 80 posts is hardly going to give those of us who don't have a life to know anything about you or what you think? or like.

Attacking people for have some banter with their mates/cyber friends is not exactly big or clever nor is it designed to make anybody want to get to know you or indeed listen to your opinions.
There are many more people on the boards who I have not met as those who I have and I consider all opinions equally valid on matters of CPFC or indeed anything. Having a piss take with friends on a General Chat forum does not make me a snob, a moron and does not mean I haven't got a life.

I am so unbelievably successful that I log onto the BBS in the morning and read/post before going out to lunch from whence I seldom return as I have staff to do the mundane stuff for me.

"Not exactly big or clever" eh James.
The only reason I said the few things I did was to get a response.
The origional subject is therefore proven. Us humble occasional commentators on BBS bow to your incredible superiority.
