Probably Radiohead for me, but I might have a side bet on Lemon Jelly at 12/1.
4/1: Coldplay 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'/Radiohead 'Hail To The Thief'
6/1: The Darkness 'Permission To Land'/Dizzee Rascal 'Boy In Da Corner/The Thrills 'So Much For The City'
8/1: Athlete 'Vehicles & Animals'/Terri Walker 'Untitled'
10/1: Floetry 'Floetic'/Soweto Kinch 'Conversations With The Unseen'
12/1: Martina Topley-Bird 'Quixotic'/Eliza Carthy 'Angelicana'/Lemon Jelly 'Lost Horizons'

Surely Coldplay and Radiohead are too mainstream to win this.

i'd like to see the darkness win it.......

Obviously I'm not going to be putting any money on it, but somewhat disturbingly I find myself in agreement with the J-Man.... I really like Vehicles and Animals.

Am I right in thinking that all the 6/1 shots were only released in the last few weeks?
The Darkness are fun but are not a serious music contender, and I suppose that I probably have to discount Lemon Jelly for the same reason although I love them to bits.
Hailk To The Thief is an excellent album but you would expect that from Radiohead.
I suspect the Thrills may nick it but don't want to see them hit the mainstream too quick or they will lose their edge under pressure to deliver!

Coldplay - pants!
Remember the judgings not based on commercial sales which these odds seem to follow. Eliza Carthy has been nominated before, great tunes.
Go and buy the compilation CD for £4 it's always a top compilation.

For all you Jellyheads, Lemon Jelly are playing Brixton Academy on October 11th. Ticket info at http://www.lemonjelly.ky/
Saw them at the Forum a few months ago, and twas a fun night, very silly, included a mass bingo game as people were filtering in before the band came on. Not wildly different from the studio stuff, I have to say, but in terms of visuals, bounciness and all-round bonhomie it was definitely worth it.
Why all the anti-Coldplay sentiment?
Is it just cos they're successful, or is there some deeper, darker secret I don't know about?

Much as I would like Radiohead to win, I don't think the album has been better than anyone expected it to be, and considering they've had 6 albums now, I doubt they'd win it unless everyone thought it was their best album.
Coldplay, maybe, given that their album is only their 2nd. I don't know the Athlete album but people seem to like it, they seem to be moderately well known which is probably a good thing, if I were into musical gambling I would bet on that as well.
I don't know that much about this award but would it usually be most likely to go to one of two bands as well-known and well established as Radiohead and Coldplay? I wouldn't bet on them.

4/1: Coldplay 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'
The reason I hate Coldplay is because their songs arn't that bad. It's just that they write songs which arn't truly amazing but have so many mainstream fans who buy other music which isn't awful/Kinda good (David Gray/Dido)but would never think to delve deeper into any music genre. They get too much airplay and too much credibility when they would actually be quite likeable if they were slightly obscure.
In a way they deserve to win, but I really really hope they don't.
4/1: Radiohead 'Hail To The Thief'
Perhaps this album is good, I don't know, but their music has so little genuine appeal to most people and music fans that to give them an award just seems rediculous. They should be given an award by Radiohead fans saying your the best band this year again.
6/1: The Darkness 'Permission To Land'
The Darkness are cool, I like their first single but from what I've heard they're a novelty band with a good novelty first album.
6/1: Dizzee Rascal 'Boy In Da Corner'
From what I've heard his album is very good and getting stabbed is sure to help his career.
6/1: The Thrills 'So Much For The City'
They came out with a bit of a bang and I liked their first two singles but I'm not to fussed on hearing any more
8/1: Athlete 'Vehicles & Animals'
Their 'Westside'(Rock Scene) was pretty cool but 'El Salvador' was just more of the same.
12/1: Lemon Jelly 'Lost Horizons'
Their 'nice weather for ducks' single just got annoying after a while but a lot of people seem to like them.
8/1: Terri Walker 'Untitled', 10/1: Floetry 'Floetic'/Soweto Kinch 'Conversations With The Unseen', 12/1: Martina Topley-Bird 'Quixotic'/Eliza Carthy 'Angelicana' - I havn't heard of.
In all a bit of a sh*t year for music. Last year had 'The Streets', one of my favourite albums that I've heard in the last few years. Ms Dynamite and Doves wern' too bad either

So you don't like Coldplay because

But don't think Radiohead should win because

Seems a bit of a contradiction really, don't ya think? And I've got to say, I don't really get this argument that if a band becomes popular, we should all 'hate' them. If a band plays good music, then they deserve respect no matter how popular they are, don't they?

Have a bet on one of the outsiders. The panel who pick the winner always like to be seen as very cutting edge and up there own arses. At least Miss Dynamite can't win this year. And why the feck is the Turin Brakes album not in there?

Yes it is strange.
I suppose I'd prefer it if a better British band were as famous and well recognised as Coldplay are now. e.g. Oasis before they turned crap or The Stone Roses.
Coldplay are Britains number 1 band by default and you have to listen to people talking as though they are doing something amazing.
and on Radiohead.
They are a niche market band that get heard by the masses because of the band they once were.
The mercury music award can be an opportunity for niche market bands to get heard by a wider audience, so more people can decide whether they like them or not. Everyone who is going to hear this new Radiohead sound through the Mercurys has heard it already, and most have decided that they don't like it.
Fair enough. I do like Coldplay quite a lot, but I take your point. I have a similar hang-up about the Manics - who seem to have a huge following despite not having written anything special since Richie decided to take a walk.
I don't imagine for a second that Coldplay will win it anyway. As has been mentioned, the judges invariably go for an up-and-coming act - normally one that's just had a couple of hits. Like I said, I reckon the Thrills are the likely option, but Athlete look to have a good chance too.
