Royals battle with Palace for Ivar

READING will find out today if they have captured Ivar Ingimarsson in a deal worth up to £200,000.

As the Evening Post exclusively revealed yesterday, Royals manager Steve Coppell is chasing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Iceland international, but faces competition from Crystal Palace for his services.

Coppell said: “We have been talking with Ivar Ingimarsson, but another club is in for him, so we’re in competition with them.

“It’s difficult to say whether he’ll come, but I should find out today.”

Ingimarsson is not in Dave Jones’s plans at Wolves, although the 26-year-old defender was on the bench for the Premiership new boys’ draw with Fulham at the weekend.

Reading are in desperate need of defensive cover as John Mackie will be out for at least a month after undergoing knee surgery on Monday. And Adie Williams and Steve Brown are the only experienced centre-backs in the squad.

Ingimarsson has played under Coppell at both Brentford and Brighton.

Meanwhile, Steve Sidwell will miss the home clash with Wigan on November 8 after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the 1-0 defeat at home to Walsall last night.

Spoke to someone at the press office (do they have new staff? An American lady answered who I had never spoken to before) and they had not even heard of him before.

That doesn't say much though as the press office are not always the first to know.

He's hardly going to choose Palace over Reading is he?

It hurt me type that, but it's the truth, let's face it. :(

Nationwide Division One sides Reading and Crystal Palace are both vying for the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers' Ivar Ingimarsson.
Wolves have in fact already agreed terms with Reading over the transfer of the Icelandic midfielder/defender but the move has hit complications in the form of interest from Crystal Palace.

Whether or not Palace's offer has come too late in the day remains to be seen, since negotiations between the West Midlands' and Berkshire sides are so close to completion.

"We have agreed a deal with Reading and Ivar is currently involved in discussions with them regarding personal terms," explained Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey.

"If he is happy with the remuneration then I see no reason why the transfer can't be concluded. But, at the moment, we await the outcome of those talks."

It is believed that the Eagles are interested in Ingimarsson as a replacement for midfielder Hayden Mullins who has signed for West Ham United.

Ingimarsson has been made aware of this new development and whilst it remains to be finalised, the 26-year old is free to turn down Reading should he so wish.

"Crystal Palace have also made us an offer but this has not yet been finalised. Ivar and his agent are aware of their interest," Moxey confirmed.

And according to Moxey, the competition for the player is testament to his ability and versatility.

"Ivar is a superb professional but will be out of contract in the summer unless we take up our option to extend his contract for a further season," he said.

"The proposed transfer would be worth £100,000 rising to almost double that depending on appearances and his new team's performance. There would also be a sell-on clause written in to any transfer."

We still have the bonus of being a "London" Club which some people, especially internationals favour, regardless of how close Reading are!

Then again, only a complete ••••••• fool would choose us over them.

He's a good player (if played at centre back) and I'd be happy if we signed him :)

At this time of season we don't have much choice but to pay fees for players. I'd be surprised if we can offer him much more than the minimum wage though.

According to the Wolves website it is between us and Reading.

given Ivar played for Coppell at Brighton and Brentord (think I'm right saying that?) I doubt he would come to us

He is a very good defender. One influence maybe that he was Darren Powells partner at Brentford, but as most people have pointed out, Sir Steve Managed him as Brentford boss. He would be a good signing though.

Even if he was mad enough to sign for us over a progressive club with a lovely stadium and outstanding manager & chairman, I predict that within two weeks one of the folliwng will have happened.

1. He will have suffered a career threatening injury and be out for the season.
2. Kember will have him playing wide left in a front six formation.
3. Our team captain will have taken him under his wing and put two stone on him.

Did we win any on Tuesday night? I can't remember too many.

All our corners and free kicks were cleared by an Ipswich player and the vast majority of their corners and free kicks resulted in some sort of chance on goal. It was embarrassing.

Shipps wouldn't contest any aerial balls from goal kicks. Saying that everytime he did that friggin ref gave a free kick to Ipswich.

Royals beat Eagles to Icelander
Thursday, 23 October 2003

Ivar Ingimarsson
Teams:

Reading
Crystal Palace
Wolverhampton Wanderers

Reading have beaten Crystal Palace to the signing of Wolves' Icelandic international Ivar Ingimarsson.
Wolves have confirmed that The Royals have won the race to land the former Brentford star.

The 26-year-old held talks with Reading on Wednesday and he has opted to join Steve Coppell's men rather than Division One rivals Palace.

The deal is worth an initial £100,000, with an extra £75,000 to be added depending on appearances and Wolves also have 25 percent sell-on clause.

"The transfer is now virtually complete and we send Ivar to Reading with our very best wishes," revealed chief executive Jez Moxey.

"He has been a good team member and I personally think that Reading are getting a bargain but, when you consider that he would have been out of contract at the end of the season and has had limited playing opportunities, then it is the best move for the club.

"It is unlikely that we would have taken the option to extend Ivar's contract by a further year.

"The move will allow the player to challenge for regular first team football and we hope it proves to be a good move for him."

And it also suggests our current coaching/management team are useless, I suggested months ago we should sign him (we need a couple of new central defenders regardless of the Mullins situation), so why werent' they on the case BEFORE now !?

I am SOOOOOOOOOO annoyed.

How the hell have we allowed ourselves to fall to as standard where Reading Football Club are considered a 'bigger' club than ourselves.

It is Simon Jordan's fault that he has not made a satisfactory managerial appointment.

It is consistent management's fault that we have not got anywhere near the kind of maximum potential out of one of the stronger First Division Squads.

Why the hell should we accept consistent and persistent under-achievement. I can accept that in this currently climate Crystal Palace sdhould not have a divine right to the Premiership. But I simply can't tolerate our lact of ambition in trying to be one!!!

In my mind there is no point being satisfied if Crystal Palace doesn't see itself as a Premiership club. Why can a club like Reading get themselves in better shape than us?

We are fast becoming the doormat of the division, everyone just walks all over us - and wipes whatever is on the bottom of their shoes on us!!!

I for one, have had enough of it!

RANT OVER!

Some at least of Akinbiyi's cost was used to pay Hughes wages, Mullins has only just gone - it was probably that which made it possible to even consider a move for Ingimarsson - and although we won't pay him this month Gray could be back, so it no good spending his wages yet. Consider also that we have signed Myrhe for a month and Clarke hasn't retired yet. Overall I doubt the picture has changed over much on the wage front.

Not a bad shout, surprised that Reading let him go - was a regular in the last third of the season in a defence that while keeping fee clean sheets didn't let that many in(apart from against us).
anyone know of any injury issues that may have led to Reading's decision?

Town have agreed to terminate the contract of Ivar Ingimarsson by mutual consent.

"He's great professional and has been a terrific player down the years. He's a proud man but things have not gone as he had hoped for. That happens in football and we have agreed to terminate his contract and wish him well for the future."

Could do much worse as a third CB between now and the end of the season. Obviously not a long term option at his age, but given that we've struggled for cover there all season, a short term deal would imho make a lot of sense if he's fit and not asking too much cash
