View Full Version : Other Signings?

I know there has been many threads on here regarding signings and i'm sorry to be starting another one.
But, since the excellent signings of Neil Ruddock and Mikael Forssell on loan for a year, not forgetting Tommy Black and Julian Gray, what positions still need to be filled and what players could do it.
I think we still need a new goalkeeper, left back, and maybe one more striker.
Jordan said that he hoped to sign 4 new players by the start of the season, 2 came yesterday so another 2 could follow shortly, who could these be.
Anyway these are the players i feel we should attempt to sign.

Goalkeeper:
Espen Baardesen - Unfortunate problem is Watford could beat us to it but it still doesn't stop us bidding does it
Thomas Myhre - A good keeper who's available and may drop down a division, he did last season

Left Back:
Apart from Ashley Cole, who i think there's no chance of signing anyway, and Sun Jihai i can't really think of any others who we could get in this position, it's a tough job for Steve to try and find someone to fill it.

Striker:
Dougie Freedman - From the last Freedman thread we all agree he is talented and is a good goalscorer, probably wouldn't cost us much either.
Andy Booth - Noticed this today that Sheff Wed had actually accepted £700,000 from Wolves but move fell through and think this would be money well spent. Still quite young abut is a proven goalscorer. Be a good buy.

Anyway, Steve and Simon are the one's who know who they want so we'll just have to wait and see but those were just a few ideas.

I honestly feel that a strong, tested and proven goalkeeper is now a priority for the club.

We urgently need another striker. Forsell's a good young player but we need a foil for Morrsion, someone who can hold the ball up a bit up front, someone with ariel presence in the box and someone who can give us a bit of muscle up front.

Possibly a goalkeeper, I though Digby ended the season quite well but it sounds like he's been awful so far in the preseasons. I don't know much about Greg so whether he's good enough I couldn't say, it's one of the positions it's especially important we get things right in though. I also feel an experianced left back is deperately needed.

I believe that Baardsen would be a good signing. With regards to a left back, there was a young player who played extremely well for Peterborough in the play off Final - His name was Gareth Jellyman.

We're all having similar thoughts here....

1. A goalkeeper. Baardsen is an obvious target,....young and good.

2. A left back. Keep plugging away for Cole but more realistically, take Phelan for a season's stop gap.

3. Another forward. Shipperley & Freedman are obvious targets. Wouldn't discount Ian Wright being a target.

4. Perhaps another central defender which would allow Fan to play in midfield ? Must have pace. Linighan, Ruddock & Woolzey all lack it.

I admit that he might not be the youngest, quickest or most mobile of strikers, but Brett Angell on a free transfer might prove to be an inspired signing. He is good in the air,can hold the ball up and can score goals.

Spot on with Brett Angell there, Troll. trouble is I fear he could be another of those players that scores freely against us, but dries up as soon as he arrives.

By the way, a Watford pal tells me Baardsen is signing for them on Monday after a medical http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif ... Chrissie Day anyone? ... Thought not ...

Anyway Brett Angell signed for Walsall on a free.

I wouldn't rule out Cole just yet:

Arsenal will be cash rich after the reason transfers and football money. I suspect that in order to elevate the inevitable pressure from fans to replace two of their favourites Arse will buy big. [I[If[/I] they buy players all over the park with their £30m UKP and TV money whose to say that Cole may lose the chance to break into the 1st team.

Heres hoping

I don't think a goalkeeper is a priority. They all have their "off" days and Digby has also played some blinders for us last season.

What's more important is the defence in front of him. Any goalkeeper that gets blitzed during a game isnt going to be very confident for long, but with a solid defensive unit in front of him he will feel a lot more self assured.

There is a left sided player at Leyton Orient who can play at full back or in midfield. His name is Matt Lockwood and he was receiving some good reviews last season.
There is also a promising young left back at Luton by the name of Matthew Taylor.

BIG LETTER!
29-07-2000, 06:09 PM
Matty Lockwood is a great shout. I've been saying for ages that we should sign him, hes a quality young player with a great future and I reckon we wouldn't have to spend any more than £450,000 for him.

Steve Morris
29-07-2000, 06:10 PM
Al from Bromley it is Rodney Jack & he is a good player with lots of pace, so we should pick him up quite easily as Crewe sell all their good players.

We need a decent goalkeeper though

Bajsmannen
29-07-2000, 06:12 PM
Why not Alex Notman from (dare I say it), Man Utd. He would be available at a cut-price fee now that Alex made it clear that he doesn“t want him.

Guvnor6
29-07-2000, 06:38 PM
Goalie- Gregg can only learn from Digby's cock-ups, Coppell is a god at finding decent goalies usually (except Miller)

Defender- Dean Gordon if Boro don't sell Ziege he'll get pissed of on the bench. remember those crosses those thunderbolts (those were the days)

Midfield is fine but a bit of depth would be good.

Striker wise we need someone hard like a shipps. or bradbury, Mckensies okay at this but never frigging scores (hesky-a-like) we need a whitey really, Svensson and Morrison. Forsell maybe good at this but he needs t learn to header and palying in the premiership as a forward has made him play like a tart.

It's Blackburn 2 Everton 1. August 12 is 2 weeks away. We've conceded (so far) 17 goals in 4 games. Give me Digby's head on a pole now!

I reckon Steve'll give Fraser and Matt about a month into the season before signing another 'keeper.

After today's performance we should pay the money and sign Neil Harris, he pissed all over us, would be money well spent.

The way things are going, one has to pose the question "Will Steve Coppell still be in charge one month into the season " ??

What about Dele Adebola. He caused problems for us last season. Mike Stowell at Wolves might be the answer to the keeper problem if he is out of favour. I would imagine we would get Carlo for about £1 million.

If we can't get Freedman then what about Jamie Cureton of Bristol Rovers. Don't know if he's joined someone else this summer but he's scored loads of goals in the 2nd division.
Or, for a tall physical front man what about Dean Holdsworth. I know he's had his personal problems but Bolton may sell him for a low transfer to us, and a move to London may suit him.
If Watford do get Baardson then Alec Chamberlain is not a bad keeper.....

I read today that Arsenal's No.2 goalkeeper Alex Manninger is looking for a loan deal so he can get first team footbal, i feel we certainly could provide him with that, considering we are struggling in that position ourselves.

Thomas Myhre (GK)
Danny Boxall (RB)
Wayne Quinn (LB)
Carl Serrant (LB)
Darren Caskey (CM)
Geoff Pitcher (CM)
Neil Harris (S)
Neil Shipperley (S)
Andy Booth (S)
Matt Jansen (If dreams could come true !)

Off the top of my head .... most of those are affordable and on sensible salaries.

How about Roger Freestone as short term answer to keeper problem . Swansea had best defensive record last year & Freestone is an experienced , dependable goalie -- and wouldn`t cost the earth.

Eagle, couldn't agree more about Manninger. I suggested the same last season but he was too close to the 1st team then. He has also got some stick from his International Manager for not playng enough since then. With him in goal it might give Gregg another year to develop and give Steve Coppell time to look for other options. Chucking Gregg in now would be a mistake and Digby won't do the job thoroughout the whole season.

Come on Stevie, pick up the phone to te Arsenal again. You must know the number pretty well by now!

Honestly, we should try and get some seasoned pro's, and Carlo would be a great signing if Baardsen is watford bound.

Roger Freestone is no answer - are you serious?? Craig Forrest or Thomas Myhre. We also need to look at the lower divs a bit more as we cannot afford to pay premiership wages....Caskey would be good, as would Nicky Forster - I know him and he has real pace. And we should try to get Frode Kippe of Liverpool on loan at the back - he played for Stoke last year and did very well. Not sure what games some of you watch - did I see Brett Angell mentioned - he is useless and signed for Walsall about 2 months ago. Andy Booth would be okay though.

We're rushing out to replace the keepers but how much of the blame should they take for the shocking results of the last 2 weeks? How do you balance that against some of the heroics of last term?

I'd probably be looking to midfield just as much.

It seems like left-back is most important. I'd put in a speculative bid for Stevie McMillan of Motherwell. I've seen him a bit and he seems like a decent player.

Here's another possibility - apparently Mark Bosnich might move to Celtic on loan, probably leaving Jonathan Gould and Stewart Kerr as extremely frustrated deputies. Either can do the job, although I kind of appreciate Kerr's attitude as he was right in the thick of an Old Firm fight a few years ago.

Glad I am not written off in my job as quickly as you've all written off our keepers. Wasn't Digby something of a hero not so long ago?

As I said, no one likes questioning any of the players performances but with a defence that sounds like its standing around doing not a lot is it fair to blame the keeper?

It also quotes an insider as saying that Digby is unhappy and wants to leave.Would maybe explain his lack of form.

Fraser I believe is in the last year of his contract - might be something to do with that perhaps.

We can certainly find another keeper I would say - Mark Ovendale at Bournemouth is one who's impressed me in the past as a cheaper example.

bumped into Jimmy Glass the other day - he'd love to come back...

as said on another thread - Terry Phelan to come back at left back.. if only short term till we search for another.. although I do know of another young kid - Neil Jenkins - just about to break into the first team at Wimbldeon - (the fact that his dad's other half is a work mate of mine is beside the point!!) but he has impressed in their reserves and was a regular in the england under 16's - one to watch for the future maybe.

Left sided..... Jamie Vincent (has developed some wicked free kicks), Wayne Quinn, or Carl Serrant. Don't think we need another young player right now who doesn't have first team experience.

Co-incidentally I saw Wimbledon last week and was half expecting him to play or be a sub - but he wasn't !
