I made a brief note of this on another thread, but I thought it was worth a thread of it's own. As of this Thursday, I am running an Open Mic Nite at the "Hop House" in Maple Road, Penge. All being well, it will run on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each Month, with the first one being this Thursday (Jan 8th).

The idea is that it's a complete open floor for musicians, who simply turn up and play. A fully Mic'd up house PA is provided, as are a Guitar and keyboards for anyone who is so inclined. The standard of performers is likely to be mixed, from people looking to be signed sometime soon, to people performing for the first time. As such, all musicians should feel more than welcome !.

At a time when live music is getting squeezed from all angles, it would be good to see plenty of BBS'ers coming down to support the night, whether to play, or just listen. As an added attraction, Benzhiyi has confirmed that he will be down to perform at the second night on the 22nd (so hopefully a strong BBS presense for that one !). With Thursday being the first show with the new House PA though, it would be particularly good to see people come down this week. If anybody wants more info, feel free to PM me

You could do an open mic session SIKO for budding Garage MCs

So what Pub are you involved in in that part of the world?. Are you involved in running it or just a regular customer ?

All the best Jason, I can't make the 8th but will try to get down to one in the future. We are hoping to have 1 acoustic slot for all the future Young Martians Gigs, so I would like to catch up for a beer sometime and see if you can recommend some of your acts.

Thanks for the best wishes. Would be good to see you at a future show. Also, if any of your acts fancy doing an accoustic set in the future, feel free to send them down to play. Some of the better acts I deal with would certainly grace any accoustic set (two in particular spring to mind), so would love to put you in touch. If you're about on the 22nd, pop down and you can have a listen for yourself

That would be good. Date for that is 12th Feb. There are a couple of acts in particular you might want to hear, so I'll try and make sure they're about for that one

If you fancy crossing the river for one of our bashes let me know.

Yeah, I'd be really keen on that idea. Can't make Friday sadly, but I'll try and make the next one. Give me a shout when you have the date

That would be good. Feel free to introduce yourself if you're around. It's always good to put faces to names

Don't know if there were any BBS members down last night, but thanks to any who did attend. We had a fantastic night, with a very very full pub. Bodes well for the next one on the 22nd. . .here's hoping for more of the same :-)

Hate to say this mate but I personally didn't think standard was that great one or two good acts but seen lot better at open nights. Not sure if you was guy running it and played but if so you def need to chill out more and go with it a bit more made me and a few others feel bit uncomfy/ I was going to play but decided against it cause of that

Yeah I was running the show. Interested to hear your comments. Take on board what you say about needing to relax a bit more. It was first time out with new equipment, and the first time I'd ran that kind of nite on my own (I've run things like that for a while, but usually with a partner). As such I was to be honest as nervous as anything. I thought I'd carried it off without people noticing, but clearly not oops !. Will have to work on that bit, and thanks for the constructive criticism

As for the standard issue, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. It was certainly mixed, but that's the nature of these things. I do think though that the better acts down there would stand up at almost any night of that sort outside central London. As with so many things though (esp where music is concerned), that part is a matter of opinion !

Well it just my opinion seen you play before somewhere can't think where at moment, but near to there but don't think i'll be at next one. Think I'll stick to usual haunts

Jason (or anyone else),

Can you recommend a really good acoustic band for our next night on Sat 13th March ? We've got 2 excellent guitar bands to start & finish (6 foot flames & Mama Scuba), but the guys who were going to do the acoustic slot can't make this one.

Cheers.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I've only just seen the thread again !. IF you're still looking, I know a few good solo accoustic acts who might fit the bill, but not really any bands as such, although I guess you'll probably have sorted something out by now anyway ?. By the way, are you still coming to the Open Mic next week ?.

As for Benzhiyi, he unfortunately couldn't make the last one due to work commitments. I' hoping that he'll be down for the next one to make his performance debut !

Jason,

Is this still on for Thursday ? What sort of time does it kick off & finish ? Any idea of the line up ? Is it going to be a good one to check out ?
