View Full Version : Is your wife, husband or partner smarter than you?

20-01-2004, 12:33 AM

From something I posted on the "Thing's women do" thread it got me thinking.

Mrs TAK is well educated in many fields, especially business stuff, trains microsft, teaches project management and now running a marine construction company. Me, well I'm well reasonably well read, have a pretty broad knowlege of social history, fishing, football & music. So when I tell myself that OK she's smart in some fields and I am in others (OK I'm kidding myself here) so we are about even but when we have a disagreement over a fact, well she is right and I am wrong. :(

Oh well I'm glad I've married someone who can support me in my old age.

So I come out second, do you?

Well, we both have a degree from the same uni (me Law, her History of Art and Archaeology), we are both doing post graduates (me Legal Practice Course, her Museum Studies MA). So i guess we are as intelligent as each other. However, she is far more practical, has more common sense, and is more often than not right. Thoguh i sort out technical problems, and where to buy stuff for around the her falt etc, but all in all, i would say the trousers are on the other legs.

This is interesting, and something I have thought about before. I have more qualifications than my misssus, I'm better read and so on, but she has a real practical nous that I lack. I'm disorganised in the things I do; disorganistion is anathema to her. She seems to see a target and approach it methodically whereas I am all over the shop. Her approach is definitley smarter. I just think she probably has more common sense than I do.

If the proof of the pudding is the job market, then she wins, as she's always had a better salary than I have. Plus she is now in bed and I am up at 12:45am and I have to get up at 7:30am tomorrow. If that doesn't make her more smart, what does?

Yes unfortunately but as she dosn't read the BBS, I can admit it.

20-01-2004, 08:00 AM
Shouldn't you have a We're about equal option?

20-01-2004, 08:26 AM
since I'm single...then no....but previous girlfriends have been interlectually inferior to myself.

Arrogant, but true

can't spell interlectually though

No, but much more sensible........

20-01-2004, 09:13 AM
Definately not - but like calne eagle said she is much more sensible and also practical!

20-01-2004, 09:18 AM
Yes, without a doubt

I have a degree, and hold down a good profsessional job, but my other half is on another level all together. She's just completing her PHD, and cracks DNA code for a living. Within a year she's going to be qualified in her field to a level that only 50 or so people have acheived.

So yes, can't really compete with that. She is MUCH smarter than me, which is something of a first, as I've always tended to be smarter than past girlfriends.

No, she isn't smarter than me, I don't think - academically I'm probably quicker with numbers and I guess I'm more precise with and aware of language, but she has far greater powers of concentration than I do and is, I think, more intuitive in human relations. So, I don't think I'm smarter than her, either.

Nope, my wife is from a rural village and makes the village idiot look like Einstein. Has no common sense, no education and has managed to set light to herself on several occasions.

I think I'm smarter than my wife (in as much as I understand more stuff, and pick new stuff up more quickly), but as a woman she can multi-task, which makes her far more effective than I'll ever be. I can also get bogged down in the detail.

20-01-2004, 09:55 AM
Mine is much better organised than me. On that alone, I'd say she's smarter.

20-01-2004, 10:06 AM
Yes he does read the BBS, but I'm sure he will agree that we are smarter than eachother in different ways.

20-01-2004, 10:08 AM
Probably.......................................... .........................

Sprite, that is easily the gayest post I have seen in a very long time.

I'm afraid that Mrs. (Scouser) Moldberg is actually Dr./Mrs./Scouser Moldberg PhD.

Despite this training she has received, I still beat her in that BBC test the nation thing when they did the IQ test rather than the 'what happened this year' one they did the other week.

Deduce from that what you will.

We are different.

Certainly regards our income, I am prety much in control and she lets me get on with on with it. Regards the kids, and other interpersonal stuff she is much better than me.

She has a better degree- 2.1 v 2..2 than me but that is about as relevant to intelligence as our respective heights.

20-01-2004, 10:19 AM
Obviously she was clever enough to say yes when I asked her to marry me...

I think I am smarter than Mrs S in many ways. I know a lot more useless information than her and have read a lot more books. I am better at understanding things from other points of view.

Mrs Smurph has a certain practicality and doggedness that I believe comes from a specific lack of a certain type of intelligence or imagination. She just goes ahead and does things instead of thinking about them for several years before deciding they are unachievable, as I would.

To summarise, she is far better at doing things whereas I am better at thinking about them. This clearly demonstrates my superior intellect.

Well I half expected that from you!;)

but it's true! He has a better knowledge of historical and political facts, but I have a better knowledge of how to deal with more practical issues. We both have degrees in similar subjects and got similar grades so there isn't much in it otherwise. I'd say on the whole we are on a par.

My wife would tell you that I am smarter than her.

But that I have no common sense at all.

My wife could probably manage without me.

I would struggle without her.

Says it all really.

Possibly.....academically theres not much difference, but every now and again she will come out with something really profound which I would never have thought of in a million years.

Then again I retain much more useless information so when it comes to the really important things like playing Monopoly quiz machines in the pub who's the most useful eh?

Single again ... so I look on in admiration at the honesty of my fellow BBSers ;)

20-01-2004, 11:54 AM
Also single, but if I were to have a girlfriend, it would be very hard to find one smarter than me :D

Oh, and more modest!

On paper she is smarter than me. 2 degees to my fistfull of O levels. In practice her knowledge is very specialised and therefore in the bigger scheme of things thicker than me. She also earns a lot less, if that counts.

20-01-2004, 05:18 PM
Sometimes its is easier to allow your partner to be so much smarter than you;)

20-01-2004, 05:25 PM
Is the question who is the smarter, your wife or your girlfriend?

I've never really thought about it to be honest. Does it matter who's smarter, so long as you get along?

20-01-2004, 06:39 PM
nope, none of them

20-01-2004, 07:12 PM
absolutely no doubt that I am smarter than her...I lost all respect for her when she responded to my marriage proposal with "yes"...not too smart, eh?

20-01-2004, 07:47 PM
My wife is one of the smartest people I've ever met. We did the same degree at uni and she finished first in every paper while I was a steady C for the first couple of years (partly down to laziness as well). In one second year paper, we used to do these tests that counted for 5-10% of the final grade. I'd get scores like 39/80; she'd get 79. My final grade was 49%; hers was 99%.

20-01-2004, 07:47 PM
Well, you've seen britessabroads posts so I think the answer is pretty water tight.:(

20-01-2004, 08:56 PM
Very even, I would say. Anna is a Lawyer and has a good degree and we tend to get very similar scores on IQ tests. She definitely has more common sense than me (which I admit doesn't say much).

20-01-2004, 09:08 PM
Mrs RtS has a bag full of O levels and a couple of A's but was never interested in Uni. She is immensely practical with astounding intuitive skills as well as having an encycleopedic knowledge of modern art. I am a Chartered Surveyor and have an MBA and am logical to a painful degree. Over the years I have learnt to trust Mrs RtS above eveything, so yes, I think she is smarter. Additionally, while I have been off playing careers she has brought up two boys of whom I'm very proud. Nuff said.

Potentially, yes, but you know how hard it is to tell when they're still at school ;)

20-01-2004, 09:29 PM
I would say equal, but I'm sure my girlfriend would say otherwise......

That's about what I would say about my boyfriend. Academically wise I'm definitely better qualified (2 degrees etc) but for practical stuff & day to day organisation - he's much more organised than me & can do stuff like electrical problems like re-fitting lights, elements of car service & re-organising my kitchen!

So I guess it depends cleverer in what capacity!
