View Full Version : Best debut album opening track

Without having given it as much thought as I should, I would plump for 'I Wanna Be Adored' off The Stone Roses' eponymous debut.
The album has matured with age and this first track sets down a marker for the delights to come, dripping with the Roses' trademark attitude and arrogance. Great song, great album.

That was my first thought too. Would certainly win hands down in a "best first 60 seconds of a first track on a debut album" competition
But I'd like to add an honourable mention for "Talking to Clarrie" from The Bluetones "Expecting to Fly".

Waaaaaaaaaay outta my time here but is Black sabbath - Black sabbath the debut track? I wasn't very alive when it came out :)

'Hey Dude' is a pretty sensational start to Kula Shaker's K. 'Down to the Waterline' is a great start to Dire Straits. 'I Saw Her Standing There' is fantastic way to kick off the Beatles' album career. 'Good Times, Bad Times' off Led Zeppelin is one of my favourite tracks of theirs.

I agree with many that The Stone Roses album does indeed qualify for best debut album opening track - it's probably one of the first albums I ever listened to (I am young), and it sent me down the path of indie-kid-dom :lux:

I saw them a fair few times and reckon they were one of the best live acts around. Peter Coyne, guitarist Chris Dollimore and Rat Scabies have formed another band - 'The Germans'. Saw them down The Cartoon a while back... any band that can turn "Autobahn" into a kick-ass guitar frenzy is ok by me. Their cover of "I wanna be your dog" took some beating too.

Yeah, Phi Life Cypher are good, but as Chuck D once said, tend to "rhyme for the sake of riddling", and their references can be a bit lame. Great beats & delivery though. The track they did with Skitz is wicked - 'Cordless mics @ 20 paces' or something.

There was a chap in the record shop on Norwood High Street (what was that called?) who always seemed to be wearing a Godfathers t-shirt, and they always seemed to be playing The Godfathers in there too. I think I bought Birth, School, Work, Death from him, which must be languishing with all my other old vinyl somewhere in Tottenham.
I remember asking Kris Dollimore about The Godfathers after a Del Amitri gig a few years ago, but he wasn't very forthcoming. It's possible he was embarrassed about being in Del Amitri, though.
