View Full Version : Buying a new PC

I am looking to get a new PC quite soon, within the next 2 weeks actually.

Money is no object, and i mean that. If you came back with something over £3k i'd consider it.

I will need lots of memory, high processor speed, big HD, CD RW (not fussed about a DVD RW), decent graphics card.

Plus whatever else is deemed necessary by those in the know.

Can someone find me the best one out there at the moment?

Thank you.

try www.ebuyer.com or www.planetmicro.com

If you know what your doing, you can build your own customised PC to the perfect specification that you want. If not, they also do some pretty cheap 'ready-made' systems.

The micro mart magazine is a pretty good place to look. The likes of PC world are far too overpriced.

Alienware make the best PC's for 'money no object' gaming. Otherwise, if you want a decent PC and piece of mind, buy a Dell - they're built superbly, and having top customer service to back it up.

It won't be used for playing games, at all.

Their laptops are gorgeous though.

Never buy Tiny, they are evil money grabbing barstards who exist only to rip people off, and that's a quote from a bloke who used to work there!

My own home pc is a Tiny and I have never had any problems with it in 18 months or so now!!! However my previous two ones were from Time and I did have a number of problems - and if you are not aware of it Time have recently bought Tiny out!!! Most of their pcs are not Pentium chipped so I would stay clear.

I have just bought a Dell for my youngest son based on a lot of personal recommendation. Ordered it about 10 days ago and it is being delivered tomorrow. You should check out their website as you can just about get a pc built to your own specs!!!

Good luck anyway!

I thought Tiny had gone bust, anyway. They merged with Time a year or two ago and that's the last I heard of them. Didn't think they were trading under the Tiny name anymore. My old PC was a Tiny and I had problems galore. :veryangry

Thankfully, I've now got a Dell and I've got no complaints.

If you are not serious about playing games on it, I would seriously consider an Apple Powermac.Okay, there is not a lot of software out there compared to P.C's but the software and operating system included are very good.

I was in PC World the other day and saw the 23 inch Apple flat panel Displays. They are simply stunning.get one of them and a top of the range Powermac but you wont have much change out of 3 grand.

Thanks people.

I am serious about the money, and the no games part.

I have a Dell laptop and while it's chunky it has been very good.

Tiny are evil, and PC World are generally rubbish.

I find that hard to believe. My friend reckons you can build your own top-of-the-range computer for £400, and that's being fairly generous. I'm not sure if his estimate included monitor or not, but just because it's under £1000 that doesn't make it unbeatable. With those deals you're paying for the software and features that they want to give you in the price, rather than what you actually want.

You could save a few quid by not having a 128MB graphics card for a start, you don't seem to need much at all for watching DVDs, if you want it to have at least that much multimedia capability. (Just seen you said you need a big one, see last paragraph below).

In terms of brands, my family still use the Compaq Presario we bought 5 years, 8 months ago (first Presario to have a DVD drive I think, which still plays things fine). I'm using an HP Pavillion which is 1 year, 8 months old. We've never had a problem the actual PC part of either of them, so I'd recommend them.

I got a DVD-R drive for Christmas and it's brilliant, I've got about 15 different video bootlegs, through a mixture of downloading (when at university) and postal trading. Would never have got nearly as many without being able to record my own. And that's without dodgy film downloads!

I think it's important that you consider (and therefore tell us! if you want recommendations) what you DO want to use it for, rather than what you don't. Do you need a big graphics card if you don't want to play any games? Do you need the hard disk just for music? On reflection I didn't need the graphics card in mine, but could probably have done with the DVD-R. Then again, I probably got a faster drive for the money, by waiting and then upgrading.

Another one to stick up for Tiny. Had mine about 4 years. It was very cheap and cheerful but I've had no problems whatsoever in that time.

Best to get cheap and nasty. If you buy good and expensive, it's only out-of-date before it arrives.

ALDI (don't laugh!) probably do the best-value (Medion), best quality PCs on the market at the best prices. No wonder it's mainly the staff who snap them up before the public get to see them.

I wouldn't touch TINY with a large bargepole, nor Dell, nor EveSHAM.

Watch your GB space with a laptop about 20GB, no good if you want your music on the PC, with the TFT screens, most PC's are virtually laptops anyway (not like you can take it on the train, but less space taken up and a lot lighter).

That's alright then.

Long story behind why this is needed, won't bore anyone with it. Short version is, house sold, next 6-8 months will be spent in different apartments in different places while things are finished and it's a hassle packing up and moving more boxes than you need.

$8000 is the cheap option. If you click buy now and choose everything the best that they can be...it would cost you $25,000. Unbelieveable how amazing it is though. :p See the screen? You have to buy that seperately and the one they show (92 inches) is only another $27,000. :o

Perhaps when I win the lottory. :D
