With striker Jason Lee out for at least the first month of the season, Barry Fry is set to make a bid for Crystal Palace striker Leon McKenzie.
Although Lee does not require an operation on the knee he dislocated at Barnet in April, he is still going to be out of action for some time, and Fry feels he needs a replacement.
A loan spell at London Road two seasons ago saw McKenzie score eight times in 14 games.
Posh manager Barry Fry has tried to sign the 22-year-old striker on several occasions since then, but was continually rebuffed in his efforts by Palace boss Steve Coppell.
However, with Coppell having been replaced as manager by Alan Smith earlier this week, Fry is set to make a renewed attempt to bring the player to Peterborough.
Fry said: "We don't have any money for players, but I am determined to get him one way or another.
"I've had continuous talks with Leon and he has always expressed an interest to come here.
"I had spoken to Steve Coppell about getting Leon, without success, but now Alan Smith is the manager, we will see if we can sort something out."
And in other news Arsenal crashed to their second defeat in three days when they lost 2-0 to Ajax last night to finish bottom of the Centenary Tournament.
One bright spot for the Gunners was the performance of young left-back Ashley Cole, who had an excellent game.
So i guess that means he's DEFINETLY NOT coming back to Palace!

Whatever offer we are made for McKenzie, we should accept, he is a poor striker and I don't think he'll develop to be a good quality player. I have seen him have so many chances and he always misses.
He just runs around every game.
what does anyone else think on this?

I hope Peterborough do want Leon - but if they think they can have him for nothing then they are kidding themselves.
We should get at least 300k for him at current REALISTIC market value !

I don't know... I think with the right support and a bit more confidence/calmness he could do alright for us at this level.
Plus him and Clint are best buddies, so why unsettle them now. And i'd want at least £500k for him.

It's a shame they sold all of their talented youngsters to Spurs, otherwise we could have swapped him for Matthew Etherington!

It doesnt exactly leave us with many attacking options if he goes does it?
we should let Mckenzie go and take what little we are offered, he misses chances that only he can miss and best of all it means clinton will play in the centre every game where he should be.maybe we could swap him for a Whytleafe player or a crawley player

We've only got two if he stays - Morrison and Forsell. Personally I would like to see him, and the rest of the dead wood (well, Frampton) given frees. It took us ages to get rid of Brucie and Tuttle and the suchlike, and I'm not prepared for that effort to have been in vain by keeping the rest of the crap.

I think leon is a decent player, the sort of squad player who comes in for you and does a decent job, however, if we get a decent offer and we have a replacement lined up for the right price then i wouldn't object to selling him, he just doesn't score often enough.

Leon is never going to be a world-beater, but he's worth better than a joke team like Pizzaborough managed by an amiable buffoon.
Surely we should keep him as a squad player?

He has abit of pace and thats about it, he's useless at shooting and can only bundle his way through players!

It's been five years since Leon made his debut. That's a long time for a player to make his mark. Surely if he was going to do anything at this level, he'd have done so by now. £400K would be a fair price.
The only worry is that we'll sell and he'll go for a million in a year's time like so many of our players seem to do (Powell, Osborn, Collymore etc.)

Oh yeah Barry! Go for it!
We should let Leon go for free.

Thats true, but the only reason that would happen would be if he was fairly prolific at Peterborough. The last time he was there he was, but struggles for us. I say take the money, or make a swap deal for one of Fry's academy graduates.

Reckon we should get as much as possible. £500k would probably be the most we could get.

Personally, I have a lot of time for McKenzie. In my view, his performances have been less than satisfactory due to injuries, being on loan, getting poor service from colleagues and not getting a decent run in the side.
I seem to remember we were all ecstatic when Leon broke through at the age of 17 - no excuses about everyone else having left then.
He did do well at Posh - because the factors I've outlined above didn't apply. If he goes - and to a club that will play him - he will do well and will doubtless be sold on at a tidy profit - much to our annoyance.
Players don't go bad overnight - and McKenzie's no exception.
I say keep him and get the best out of him while he's still young.

Erm, no. Firstly one game against Southend is not breaking through (despite the bike), and secondly the reason we were all ecstatic about Leon is because he looked like he had a lot of potential. Like many other Palace players he has failed to reach that potential. That may be his fault, it is probably the management's fault, but that isn't the point. He isn't good enough for the level we are currently at, let alone where we want to be, and he must go. And yes, we should let him go for nothing if it gets him out of the club.

McKenzie has had all the opportunity that he should need to make the grade as a Div 1 striker but he has failed to deliver. He has an appalling goals per game rate an even worse goals/shot rate and his ability to not even get a shot in at all is unrivalled.
