View Full Version : I got the CD burner blues!

I am sure John Lee Hooker would have had them-sorry, that should be on the R&B thread!

My meisterplan was laudable and straightforward,
1. Save all my digital or scanned photos on to disc (rewritable)
2. Scan in and save all the paperwork/bills I never throw away (rewritable).
3. Sort out some music compilations (both).

I thought it would just a matter of popping out and getting some rewritables/recordables, but I seem to have got into a netherworld of jargon. It looks like certain types are necessary for specific tasks and will screw up if used incorrectly. Staff do not seem to know the question, let alone the answer!

can anyone please offer an idiot's guide? I am the idiot.

What brands are best and which are best avoided? I had a soft spot for TDK but that was for musicassettes.

What are the recommendations for audio, photo, and general usage? Are there differing levels of quality like cassettes eg ferric, chrome dioxide, which would affect choice for archival stuff?

any help would be appreciated. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/confused.gif

Oh, the burner is an 8 speed, and the software Nero, if this makes any difference.

Just buy a pack of bog standard CDR`s. The Monkey Media ones from Jungle are good value at the moment, £25 for 100.

You can burn Audio compilations fine (I know, Ive done them) Just use Nero.

You can burn Dreamcast games (I know, Ive done them) PC Games and Apps.

You can stick all your documents on them, and if you dont close the session, you can add to the disk. So just have different folders for each month ie Jan2000 Feb2000. You have 650mb to play with so you wont run out to soon.

You can also stick your photos on them, no problem.

Simple.

Most CD`s will last for 100 years, so you dont have a problem with em wearing away.

Simple CDRs will do the trick.

Cheers. Nice to know that for once the solution is the inexpensive one. I need to save for my speeding ticket for the Stockport match!

No problem. CDRW (Rewriteables) are a waste of time these days. The effort required to format them, plus the slower write speed and the increased cost.

As long as you have good structure you can just add to disks. Even if you dont want to do that, CDs are 20p each now, so its no great deal writing to a new one each time.

Enjoy your CDR its the best computer accessory I ever bought. Got 50 download Dreamcast games, plus hundreds of Music CD`s (d/l from Audiogalaxy) and tons of other stuff.

I wish I knew this kind of stuff http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/confused.gif
So what shall I do with my old 78s?

I am sure I remember a Blue Peter where they put 78's into hot water, and moulded them in to bowls. ( cue "is this a record?")
Not sure about the hole in the middle, that is probably where the sticky backed plastic came in to it!

Play your old 78`s on whatever plays them, output to the Line In of your soundcard (if the playback device has line out) , or else through a Microphone attached to Mic In on soundcard.

Record the sound using Sound Recorder, and then burn to a CDR using Nero burning. Sell 78`s to someone prepared to pay ridiculous amounts for ****ty technology.

Well thanks a LOT rashid. Thanks to your "advice" my entire collection of 78s are now plastic bowls with holes in the bottom, good for nothing!
I should have taken jaffa's advice - some of them were worth nearly half a crown http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/frown.gif

I was on Jungle's site earlier today. It says the cds are 'shrink wrapped'. Obviously I know what shrink wrapped means, but how exactly are the cds stored?
