A CD lens cleaner is something you use to clean the lens of a CD player, DVD player, Playstation or suchlike (the lens is the gizmo that reads the CD/DVD). It comes in the form of a CD, but with special micro-fibre brushes which clean the lens. You can buy one of these at any Dixons/Comet/PC World type place, for between £5 and £10. I'm sure that this is the problem, and that you don't need to repair your PS2.

By the way, I had the same problem last year and again last week. On both occasions, the CD lens cleaner did the trick.

Although, certain early batches of PS2s had dodgy lasers in them. If you PS2 was bought a few years ago (near when it was launched) then you may need to sent it back for repairs (which will cost £££).

If the lens cleaner solution doesn't work, that is.

better not do! just when i was feeling confident about fixin the problem. cheers... :-(

Don't worry, I'm sure all you need to do is clean your lens.

I remember a thing on Watchdog about PS2 stopping reading the disk after a year or so.

Mine is also well dodgy. Plays most games, but getting it to play a DVD these days is impossible. Haven't got round to buying a lens cleaner yet though.

You can get cheap spares off the net and fit them at yourself home - it is not hard providing you have some little screwdrivers and haven't got the hippy hippy shakes.

Hmmm. I'm trying to get the PS2 to read my Xport CD and having no luck. Might give this a go. I doubt I've got the right screw drivers though

Be very, very wary of the method described in that forum.

I used it on an old ps2 that was having difficulty reading dvds.

It worked for a while, but then went wrong, and buggered the lens up completely.

The lens is already set at the optimum angle. If you change it, it may help in the short term, but it will be constantly straining to read discs, and will eventually burn itself out.

My advice is: don't try to fix a PS2 unless you are properly qualified. Pay someone who is.

I think I am only 1 click from where I started. I'm guessing that cleaning the lens did the trick more than all that angle bollox. For ages after cleaning ther lens it didn't work at all. Probably cuz I used 'Joop' as my alcohol cleaner! Only after re-wiping a few times with a dry cotton bud did it start working, and now it's better than ever.

how do you get to the lens.

i took the screws out of the bottom of the PS2, promptly ripped the metal string sort of thing between the buttons and the PS2 which took ages to put back.

what do you do then, to get to the lens. i might just give up

okay, i see, using the shitty little screwdrivers. aha! i cant undo the little screws, it's too hard, i keep ripping the screws so they now nolonger have a cross head

Time for a drill then.

I tried with a phillips and failed. I did it using a very small flat head. They are tough little buggers

elliott
15-06-2004, 05:10 PM
they just grind down the little screw so much that it's no longer got a + head and is now just a # mashed shape. I'll have another go.

Kevin T

As I said, you need a flathead for the reason you mentioned above. The flathead won't grind the thread. You'll have to make sure the one you've got is the biggest that will fit into the slot otherwise it won't be strong enough and will break.

If you have completely mashed the thread then a lens cleaner is your only option.

I had this problem with a PS1. Sounds daft, but when you insert the game, turn the console up-side-down. You may find that it works. It worked for me every time.

Honestly, this is not a wind up!

Yes a mate of mine has had similar experiences, culminating in the PS2 only working when it was standing on end. We found the only way of fixing it was taking it apart (difficult - see above) and giving it a thorough clean with a dry brush, a dry cloth, alcohol on a cotton wool bud (to clean any contacts), and after putting it all back together a quick play of the lens cleaning CD. It's not perfect now, but works most of the time.

can i just thank everyone.

i finally got round to trying.

can i also recommend the little screwdrivers that you get in the glasses (specs) repair kit. Also- i'm not recommending them shitty ones you get in the crackers.

Also- can i recommend gin as your alcohol, seemed to work fine for me, and i also want to recommend Stella, not for the lazer, just to get you in the mood!!

Cheers everyone. PS2 now working again

It took Joop ages to work. Maybe Gin would have been a better bet.
