View Full Version : Songs that should be more widely known.

Which songs or indeed bands/singers do you think this should apply to?
For example whenever I listen to a Belle And Sebastian album, I cannot help but think that songs such as 'The Wrong Girl', 'I Fought In A War', 'My Wandering Days Are over', amongst many others, should be known by a far wider audience than they currently are. The world should be singing along to these songs, I think to myself.
Another couple of examples off the top of my head (having purchased his 'best of' compilation, in the HMV sale today) are Julian Cope's 'The Greatest And Perfection Of Love' and 'Sunspots'.
Ofcourse the elitist in me would prefer such songs remain as relative secrets, but they should of right be known by most people in the way that say 'Come On Eileen' or 'Heart Of Glass' are. To use an accepted 'acid test' Milkman and Postman (if not the world) should be whistling them, whilst on their rounds - you get my drift. I'm not really thinking of 'difficult' album tracks, but songs that should be accessible enough to become part of the public conscious, but for whatever reason never quite made it.

Hanging around by The Stranglers, should have been a single but they only released 2 of the first album. Also Always The Sun by the same band, great song but for some reason never made it big like it deserved to.

I'm sure what nationality he is, and unfortunately he appears to have mild Tourettes Syndrome, but I swear one of my local newsagents was "singing" excerpts from Eno's "Music for Airports" the other day ( it makes a "pleasant" change from receiving the occasional barely understandable "bast@rds")

It certainly is, in particular United States of Amnesia and Kill Your Boyfriend. Top blokes, too. Me and a mate went to see them at the Joiners Arms in Southampton just after it came out and got chatting to them at the bar. At the end of the night, as they kicked into Weird Superman, they said "This one's for Ben and Chris". Us two students were naturally delighted. I've still got my signed ticket stub somewhere, will have to have a look for it.
You do know they did a follow up called Keepsakes, which was never released? I have a sampler for it featuring five songs - Sailing Off The Edge of the World, In & Out, Be Careful, This Is The Future, and Flowers On A Lamppost - will do you a copy if you don't already have it.

It's a great song, which loses a little for me because of the absolutely awful lyric in the middle of the chorus:

Happens all the time
Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Its going to happen - happen - happens all the time
Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Best story I ever heard
The truth about fat Mr X and the young girl
See how far he'll let you go
Before he persuades you when you're walking home
Happens all the time ...
Watching your friends passing by
Going to sleep without blinking a blue eye
Too slow to notice what's wrong
Two faced to you when you're taking them on
Happens all the time ...
Everything goes when you're dead
Everything empties from what was in your head
No point in waiting today
Stupid revenge is what's making you stay
Its going to happen - happen - till your change your mind
Short Sharp Shock Treatment...........How a Great Song should be (By the way EWMG im NOT Fat Mr X ;)

That's the most obvious bit for what I meant. Can't remember now if it was just dumb old me who thought it, but I always saw that as a reference to getting the British out of Ireland.

You mentioned Steve Harley my 2nd all time favourite musician, then Dean Friedman's 'Ariel'. Great Jewish lyric. Check out MacDonalds Girl too for more of the same.
How about Costello's 'I Want You' or 'Indoor Fireworks'

Ridgeway!
Wall of Voodoo's 'Mexican Radio' was cool.
'The Hammond Song' from the same Colourfield album is a personal fave.
This Mortal Coil's version of 'Song to the Siren' is possibly the worst cover of all time, whereas The King's version of it surpasses the original for me.

Other bands that deserve a wider audience include Claytown Troupe, Our Lady Peace and Remy Zero.

No, I do mean 905 by the Who from the Who Are You album. A harsh song relying heavily on electronics but with some typically challenging lyrics...
"And everything I know is what I need to know
And everything I do's been done before
Every sentence in my head
Someone else has said
At each end of my life is an open door"
Tony - you're spot on with those Small Faces songs. Afterglow is wonderful!
Can I also lob in "Since You've Been Gone" by Rainbow which I managed to go 19 years of my life without hearing, and "Sherry Darling" by Bruce Springsteen.

Hi guys,
First of all - sorry for hi-jacking this thread. I've been reading this board for about 4 years now and my first maeningful post has bu**er all to do with Palace
Anyway, my two main passions are Palace and music (typical old bloke) and seeing as there appears to be a very wide cross-section of ages and tastes, I have a question, nay, an appeal.
In the mid - late eighties I somehow came by a home recorded tape of an album. The only information was the words 'Acid Jazz' handwritten on the tape. The music was indeed acid jazz, beginning with a track that heavily sampled the bassline to Steely Dan's 'Ricki Don't Lose That Number' and may have been called 'Traffic'.Or that may be the next track.Later there was a track that predominently featured the word 'Brother'.
Obviously I lost the tape after about two years and have been looking ever since.Iknow this a complete long shot, but has anyone got any ideas? I have searched the acid jazz and asscoiated sections in all the big stores (and some little ones ) and trawled through many a catologue on relevant websites to no avail.
Anyway, once again sorry for the hi-jack .The reason for not being a prolific poster is I normally only read the football related threads and any given opinion that I may have on a subject is on the screen before I have opened a bottle of red and thought about typing.
