Should I buy David Gray's new album or The Best of Blur?

At the moment I'm leaning towards Blur but I could be persuaded otherwise.
What do you reckon?

I reckon David Grays is thye best album of the year so far. I know a lot of people that share this opinion.

Benny B Block

David Gray definitely. It is very chilled out and ideal for the commute to the city and back.
At first you think all the songs sound very similar but don't be fooled.

Blur are also rans. They've had their day and now want some retirement cash.

David Gray???? After the travesty that is his version of Soft Cell's 'Say Hello Wave Goodbye', the depressing whinging git desrves to be shut in a room and forced to listen to The Walker Brothers until his ears bleed.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Along with JJ72 and Coldplay, these are my four must buy albums of the year. I'd definitely recommend you buy both David Gray and Blur. If you do decide to get the Blur album I'd also suggest buying the limited edition version with the added live cd.

Spanish Dan

Definitely Blur - it will put you in a good mood for the rest of the day, David Gray will just send you to sleep. I can't agree with Benny B Block about them being also-rans, I think they've been consistently one Britain's best groups over the last decade and I'm not really a 'bands' kind of person, I like my music more soulful!

David Gray's a cracking album, though a few of the tracks are deffenitley fillers.

My reccomendation for the moment is the Lemonjelly.KY ep, well worth a listen.

Mind you I must be getting old I bought four cd's on Saturday:

Creadence - Green River
The Specials - A&B sides & rarities collection
The Beatles - The White album (don't have a turntable anymore)
Masters at work 96-00 Collection (the 90-95 is much better).

Agreed - the best Ministry album so far. David Gray is tedious white-trash garbage. Blur are middle-class w@nkers masquerading as East End wide-boys. Do you REALLY want to listen to bilge like "Charmless Man"??? Surely not.

I have all of Blur's albums, so I wouldn't personally buy the Best Of, but to anyone who hasn't got the albums, I recommend it. Apart from Great Escape, Blur have continually evolved and produced top-class material. Their early stuff is still brilliant - early indie at it best - and their most recent stuff pushes the boundaries of contemporary indie (although it's a shame they chose the three "safest" tracks off "13" to release as singles).

I believe David Gray is a good album, but unlikely to set your world alight.

TAK, what's the Lemonjelly album like? I've heard its worth a punt - can you provide a review?

Oooohh, so much to get my teeth into on this thread!
Best Ministry album so far?
Yes wonderful, if you can't make up your mind what dance music you like, and need some soft nerd of an A & R man to help you.
The WORST of commercial, un-cutting edge dance music, for f*cks sake!
David Gray? Chilled?
Well, I'm sorry, but my mother, in her fifties, does her vacuum cleaning to the sound of tw*ts like this and the Beautiful South. Safe garbage for suburban housewives, then..
Blur, 'early indie', Baloo? I think not, mate, unless it's relative, and you happen to be twelve!
As for Blur sounding like the Smiths, Gaffer, your ears must be made of concrete.
I am no fan of the Smiths, but there really is no contest.
The Smiths had one of the most innovative guitarists to appear in the last twenty years, and the singer, while be a class A chad, wrote excellent lyrics.
Strawberry, the words David Gray and Walker Brothers should NEVER be used in the same paragraph. It's like placing a diamond in a bucket of pigsh*t!
Forget both those albums, get to a good independent record store, that isn't trying to sell you lowest common denominator cack, and have a listen to something a bit more f*cking challenging and stimulating.
No wonder the f*cking charts have been w*nk for the last ten years...... http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

TAK, you must be some kind of nut case. I thought that the 96-00 collection was better than the 90-95 - just for the 10 minute masturbation session of "To Be In Love". That said, congratulations on your impeccable music taste! One thing these CDs have made me realise is that I need to go out and get a lot of Nuyorcan Soul albums.

And give us all a break with the "cutting edge" dance bollox. I can't stand dance snobs who think a new tune is brilliant until it's "hijacked" by mainstream and suddenly it's garbage. Pathetic.

Well I have got the David Gray album ( on TAKs recomendation ) and its OK.

But for a cracking album, thats well out of the mainstream and aint none of that dance ****e then try 'Transcendental Blues' by Steve Earle.

Or, to be really original, go and buy 'Strangers in the Night' by Frank Sinatra. Possibly the greatest album ever.

At last, a man with taste (although it's not quite up to the exceptionally high standards of Steve Earle last few albums, IMVHO). In a similar but mellower vein, I'd thoroughly recommend 'Red Dirt Girl' by Emmylou Harris. Don't worry - it ain't Country & Western.

Dance music - one of the biggest con tricks of our time (and an oxymoron to boot). They're taking the p*ss out of you, guys. And as for designer labels...

Napster is very good - but has been now invested in by BMG and they want to eventually start charging per month for people to use it.

I have a Rio as well Paf - but don;t use it much as I still need to get a bigger memory card ! - although they are much cheaper now than they used to be.

Wrap yer ears around these:

The Flaming Lips
Terry Callier
Millie Jackson
The King (very amusing)
Tim Buckley
Janis Joplin
Nick Drake

Gil Scott Heron

Mercury Rev

Nah - I wasn't a happy hardcore freak. I was one of those that deserted the dancefloor when Slipmat or whoever came on at World Dance. I remember once he, or one of his cronies, was playing this happy set one New Year at the Docklands Arena. The whole dancefloor emptied. After a few tracks, he knew he's lost the crowd, so suddlenly stuck "Ganga Man" on at full belt! The dancefloor very quickly came back to life, as about 6 little white glovers sulked in the corner.
