Just got a new computer, but I'm wondering how I can transfer my entire mailbox, currently on Outlook Express 5, to my new computer.

The "Help" section doesn't seem to cover this process, I can't even figure out where my mailbox is held on the current computer.

Can anyone help me please? I'm not usually so thick, honest.

Eh????

In outlook goto File-->Export

The export your messages then your address book to two files

Then copy them to disk

Then on your new PC do file-->Import in Outlook and grab the files from your disk

Thanks Dave, but tried that first, all I end up with is a message telling me I can have the export as either an Outlook file or and Exchange file.

Tried the Outlook route, but it won't load back into Express and I don't know what Exchange is!

OK-

Go to find files or folders

search for *.wab

There should be one or two of these files- these are your address book- you can copy this to your new PC

The file will need to go somewhere like

"C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\dave\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\dave.wab"

Obviously replace dave with your name

The messages themselves are stored in .dbx files which are in another folder- copy those accross also

It's difficult to say exactly where these files needs to go- you will have to determine this yourself

HTH

You SHOULD be able to copy the files directly across from one machine to another.

The path to find the files is:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Under this folder you'll find mail and news folders, as well as any newsgroups you are subscribed to.

Your address book will be under:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Alan the path will be different if they log on to windows when the PC boots won't it?

Yup.

The route that Alan came up with is right for my works PC, but its different on my home PC, which is in the Identities folder of App_Data and has an absolutely huge character string thereafter as a directory.

Anyway cheers for the help guys, much appreciated!

Are you drunk Neil !!!!?

And no - you wouldn't normally have a password on a home PC - although some people do.

Not drunk, just getting used to a tiny laptop keyboard again after a week off.

Surely it makes good sense if you share a PC with someone else, you can keep your favourite porn sites private and have a personal desktop picture/theme/screensaver etc etc

It certainly does but having a password of 'palace' won't keep Sue out for too long http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yes indeed Dave - I was thinking though that Neil was refering to a home PC (and I know Janet's isn't networked in any way), where obviously you wouldn't need any sort of logon.
