No way in Athens they were saying that unborn children will still be paying fo these olympics when they retire, it will be an excuse for Red ken totake more tax from us and enciurage even more tourists it will be a nightmare

We wont get them anyway, and millions of pounds will be wasted trying to get them.

I'd love for the Olympics to be held over here - my sister went to Athens as a volunteer and I'd do the same if they were in London.

I'll juts add my usual 2 cents worth that I always post whenever one of these threads come up. Go for it. One of the best life experiences you'll ever have is hosting the Olympics in your home country. :p

Try to ignore the miserable gits who moan about taxes going up etc. If the Govt don't spend your money on the Olympics, they'll always find something else to justify raising taxes. :S: :S:

I fully support the London bid - and anyone who doesn't is a boring old fart.

Of course you can support the bid ... you won't have to pay for it, not living in London.

This boring old fart :D would rather see tax payers money spent on our health service, education, transport than something which will only benefit a few. The infrastructure just isn't here.

If there isn't the infrastructure in the capital city of one of the top 5 richest countries in the world then it must be impossible for the Olympics to ever be put on again, anywhere.

Compare with Paris - much better transport system, most of the sports buildings already there - Stade de France was conceived and built in the time it took us just to agree with needed a new Wembley.

i would think it would be perfect oppertunity to improove the transport problems in london , health service would hopefully benefit by the very fact of encouraging people to get off their asses and involved in different sports (ok that will have very marginal effect) .
it will create jobs , business oppertunities with positive economic effects that will hopefully negate any tax burdens, but im sure spf would know more about that than me .
and as said earlier ,life is to be enjoyed, and to experience major sporting events with the atmosphere involved, is one of lifes greater highs .

No, to start with i'm not a fan of the olimipics, i think their boring to watch. We did a project at uni about the prospects of hosting the olimpics in 2012 and found that it would cripple the economy.

We also found that they plan to build a 80,000 all seater atadium for the event as well as rebuilding wemberly. The stadium will never get used after the events. I feel we could have built a running track around the new wembery and saved a lot of money.

Yes, provided that all the money necessary to be paid by the taxpayer for preparing the bid, improving the infrastructure, etc. is paid for by London taxpayers. This could be balanced out by giving discounts on ticket prices for those living in London.

LOL - why should we subsidise everyone coming to the Olympics? If the UK wants it, let the UK pay, not Londoners.

Like •••• do we want it. We will end up paying for it. The only reason i'd have the Olympics here is if we got a nice shiny new stadium out of it - but i can't see that happening.

I can confirm that winning the Olympics is a fantastic boost to moral and pride of a city. Done well, it provides an impetus for the infrastructure projects the city needs, and provides a lasting legacy of sporting centers of excellence for the future use of citizens. Planned well, it is self-financing. It is also a huge boost to the tourism industry so there is a continuing payoff.

There is also a wonderful excuse for a two week long party.

If the Olympics are to be held in London, then clearly the long term benefits will be felt here- just as the Commonwealth ones are in Manchester and Barcelona and Athens have done with previous Olympics.

The question to me, is should Europe's richest city be the beneficiary of this huge economic injection? Not only has it the money itself to redevelop Stratford (if it wanted to) but the marginal benefit here will quite clearly be lower than were they to be offered to a poor city.

My own feeling is that, if the Olympic ideal is to be upheld, then the Games should always be held in a low developed city/country where their impact will be most felt/appreciated.
