For some time I have been threatening to organise a trip to Budapest.
I was hoping that this could include an Ujpest vs. Ferencvaros derby but it seems as if the two teams will be kept apart (at least until the spring) as a consequence of the new league structure.
How about the weekend of the 23rd and 24th September?
Cheapest flight is to Vienna from Stanstead or something about 70 quid return. If enough people want to come I will arrange a bus from there.
So whose up for a weekend of beers at 25 pence a time, gorgeous looking women and crap football?
Its a lot better than Amsterdam cos its a lot cheaper, there are less drunken northeners and you have considerably less chance of running into David Murry(a).

As you can probably imagine I wouldn't be particularly inconvenienced by any weekend because I'm already here.

It's a good idea but it needs more work on it. Don't start booking things up yet.

Who are the reigning champions in Hungary?

Has any club been in the same situation as Palace?

A potted history of Hungarian football in 5 sentences awaits us...

And I have also been told that a Hungarian Club have been drawn to play against my other team, the alternative glorious boys in red and blue Hadjuk Split, in the qualifiers for the Champions league. Any idea who ?

Reigning champions are Dunaferr owned by a steel mill in Danube New Town (formerly Stalin Town). Ave attendance approx 750. I guess they are also the side who will be beaten soundly by Hajduk Split.
Only 2 sides have so far been sold into private ownership. Most are still owned by government ministries, local authorities or state owned business.
The first (privatly owned club) is MTK who were traditionally the middle class jewish club. Suffice it say that Hitler and Stalin put paid to their supporter base and they also play in front of c.500 people.
The second is Stadler. Owned by Jozsef Stadler an "entrepreneur" who made a mint trucking wine to the Ukraine.
He bought his local 3rd division team, moved them to his village, built them a 15,000 all seater stadium (that can accomodate the population of the village 3 times over) and then got them into division one.
He got sent down for tax evasion and the club no longer exists.
Dont come to Hungary for the footie.

Excellent post Pistike! Sounds far more entertaining than our league!

Who are the most popular club in Hungary, and what crowds do they get? What has happened to the likes of Honved, Videoten, and MTK Budapest?

1. Kispest Honvéd have languished near the bottom of div 1 for the last few seasons. Play in front of about 3,500 skin heads.
2. MTK see above.
3. Videoton champions of div 2 last season.
The best supported clubs are all provincial Diosgyör from Miskolc, Györi ETO, DVSC from Debrecen and Zala from Zalaegerszeg. All attract crowds of approx 10-12,000.
There is however only one team in Hungary and that is Ujpest.
The Man Utd / Brighton equivalent are Ferencváros.

Steve,
Which weekend will it be, I'm definately coming. The sooner the better.

The amount I've been drinking lately it makes sound economic sense to spend a weekend in Budapest.
