An excellent draw - I suspect a new ground for many of the travelling crew.
Can be a bit dodge there tho' as Millwall found out last season. If I might make an pub stop recommendation for those travelling by car. Head for Magor, just over the Bridge, its 20mins from Cardiff and lovely old village with a couple of great pubs.

Not a very friendly place Ninian Park - I've been slapped a couple of times just for being English - Londoners are even less popular.

As Neil said its a long time since we have played at Cardiff.. 1984/5 season if my memory serves me correctly.. Its not the most welcoming of grounds, and their supporters are very hostile towards Londoners. My cousin (a Barnet supporter) travelled down there last season, they had an away following of about 30. He said even they received untold amounts of abuse and hassle.. A new ground for a lot of our away support, so im advising anyone whos thinking of going to be very wary when in the vicinity of the ground.. This won't deter me from going down though..

Personally, I think this cup should be sent the way of the dinosaurs, into the history books. And as for making them 2 legs, won't our football authorities wake up to the fact that TOO MANY POINTLESS GAMES ARE BEING PLAYED!!!!!
I went to Cardiff in the promotion year of 1978/79 and even then it was hostile. I was pre-warned, not to wear anything that resembled Palace and right before the game started a "mob" of Cardiff fans just invaded the away section, kicking, spiting and fighting with any non Welsh speaking person.
Cardiff scored a goal and to save myself... I was forced to jump and celebrate!!!
By the second half, the Police decided the Palace fans had been tormented enough and we were moved to a seating section behind a goal... I think the final score was 2-2.
My advice to anyone, DON'T GO.

It's a good job we are not at home to Cardiff on the same day as Brighton are at Millwall.......there would be one hell of a punch up at London Bridge.

If you do go it may be worth taking a sheep with you as it would divert their attention for a while.
I suppose even a leg of lamb might confuse them sufficiently.
I will probably go disguised as a leek.

Excuse me but *yawn* its the Worthington (or is that Worthless) Cup time again. I'm sorry but that competetion is so boring so is there any real need for a thread on it?!?
Saying that I'll probably go to the home leg,
but only as an excuse to have a few beers and watch the lads...

You all say this cup is worthless but you forget the extra income that it can bring in, especially if you go on a run like Tranmere did last season, it literally saved them.

One of my first Palace memories (and not a happy one) was the 1-1 draw which sent us down to Div 3 at end of 73-74 season.

Trolley, it's a case of the amazing, vanishing post syndrome!
It's a great draw although I will be abroad when the second leg happens which is a shame. I've always said that if we ever drew a Welsh side in the cup I'd definetely go. However I will be at the Selhurst game, so at least it's another league club who I can tick off the list of those I've seen Palace against.
Incidentally been to Cardiff a couple of times, the city center is really nice and so maybe it's worth drinking there and then cabbing it to the ground for the match.

If you're going by train, my advise would be to take great care on the walk back to the station.
Don't expect any help from the local police, I have to admit Ninian park was my most frightening experience at any ground I have visited.
I'm sorry but I won't be going back in a hurry, as I said before if you are going take great care and don't wear colours.!!!

Scarey!
Cardiff is without a doubt the least welcoming place I have ever visited as a football supporter (including Millwall). There aren't too many pubs close to the ground and you won't be allowed into the ones that are nearby.
The seating area is inadequately segregated, so if you want to sing about the joys of qualifying for the World Cup, or abuse them for shagging sheep, you'd better stick to the open terrace. Once outside the ground after the game, bear in mind that you will get no protection from the police (they're Welsh too, remember).
And to top it off, your old friend and lodger, Sam Hammam has been learning Land Of My Fathers and whipping up the Celtic (not Glasgow) fervour.
I won't be visiting Ninian Park for our friendly match, because friendly and Cardiff don't go together.
Good luck!
PS. When Luton were there recently they burnt a Welsh flag on the open terrace. To say that didn't go down too well would be more than a slight understatement.

My memories of Cardiff are not good either. I went there by coach one monday for that 2nd cup replay with Swansea, where it was snowing, we got there late, and a Swansea supporter was stabbed to death about 200 yards down the road. We bloody lost, and were kept back for ages while the police questioned everyone. Got back at 5am.
I've been to Swansea a couple of times and never had any problems there at all.

AJ, I was at that game in 1978. I came on my own by train, and just to get home safely I left 5 mins early.(I was only young!!).
On the long walk back to the station, there were groups of Cardiff thugs roaming the streets in groups of 4 or 5, asking people the score, obviously looking for a London/non-Welsh accents. You should have heard my best Welsh "Two-all, Boyo".
I'm not sure what it's like nowadays, the Police may have got it sorted, but in those days it was scarey as hell.
My mate went down there with Chelsea the year before. He reckons it was mayhem. There was scrapping all over the big field to the side of the ground.
Beware!

Oh joy, a Palace match at my local friendly football ground.
I live in the Valleys and work in the Valleys. There are plenty of idiots here. Letting them know you're English is a bit like having a long beard, big nose and wearing a skull cap to a Nazi rally. As I discovered one hazily remebered evening after drinking in a Valleys pub with quite normal people, on the walk home a couple of youths took a dislike to me, they were both quite young and smaller than me. They engaged me in conversation until I remember saying something like "yeah, I'm F*cking English alright" a few punches were exchanged then suddenly two youths became ten and I got my head kicked in.
Still, being the idiot I quite plainly am I will indulge in some beers and attend the match.(If my missus lets me)

Call me naive, but I've never heard of Cardiff City being a majorly nasty fan base..
And call me even naiver, but surely the police are under even more scrutiny now we had all the trouble in Euro 2000, so they should be making sure that things run smoothly between English and Welsh clubs...?
Cardiff play English clubs most weeks without bother don't they??

Both Cardiff and Swansea figured highly on the list of worst hooligans compiled by an MP recently. That's indicative of the social prblems facing this part of the UK. Also worth remembering that a certain other South London club played at Ninian Park last season and caused mayhem. That said if my circumstances were (are?) different I would definitely be at the game.
If we go there full of songs about sheep (or worse) then we can expect a different kind of "welcome in the hillsides".
The centre of Cardiff has a lot of nice pubs, Brains being the local brewer. They have taken over Buckleys so may find stuff like "the Reverend James" in pubs. Worth a sample. Avoid "Welsh Bitter" at all costs - so weak it was allowed in America during the prohibition.
Another idea - if you are in Cardiff early enough see if you can get a tour of the Millenium Stadium - it really is quite spectacular.

There were major rucks last year when Millwall came to Cardiff, everyone here knew it would happen I spoke to locals who said they were getting up early to form the reception committee at the station.
Even worse rucks when Cardiff play Swansea.
Police attitude is - let them get on with it. If it doesn't make national press and embarrass the local chief constable then they don't give a ****.
Being in Wales and of little significance to the Press boys in London it very rarely makes national press but Cardiff V Swansea matches would piss all over anything seen at Euro 2000.

Where the hell have you been living? Some sleepy little place in Hampshire or something?
I read somewhere that the return leg Millwall vs. Cardiff was also resplendent with cucumber sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer!

I know that Torquay Utd. pleaded with the Football League to ensure that their home fixture with Cardiff this season would be a 12.00pm kick-off, to try to prevent the sort of grief they had there last year, and the F.L. took no notice... which was nice of them.

I remember reading an article in "The Western Mail" - local welsh rag - written by a Cardiff City fan who was one of about 25 deported from Euro 2000. I didn't notice this being reported in any national press (although I may be wrong).

And following on this Welsh violence/anti English theme, I was at Lords 6 weeks ago to watch Gloucester v Glamorgan in the B & H Cup final.
Me and my mates found ourselves siting with Glamorgan supporters, or more like Wales supporters.
They treated it like England v Wales and there was a really intimidating atmosphere all the way through.
Lots of Cardiff & Swansea shirts about.
They hate the English.

Yeah, that was Dai Thomas, used to play for cardiff and is now going to be given a free transfer.
He's from Caerphily and isn't that bad a player, other than being thick as sh*t.
The other guy on that Panarama was Anis Abrahams, who used to own Panama Joe's (hideous, now closed nightclub in cardiff), and is banned from all league grounds. A right little toe-rag, and another reason why i won't be attending the away leg.

Cardiff are just big time naughty and although I desperately want the new ground I'm wondering whether going down there with Palace is wise. I may just bide my time and go when they're playing Bury etc. like I did in order to cross Swansea off my list. Going in the home end with 6000 fans screaming `Oh Eng-er-lund is full of ****' was not ideal but I cheered at the right time i.e. when they scored and got out alive! If Palace win at Cardiff it might not be pleasant.
It's a shame because the city centre is lively with plenty of bars and plenty of beautiful women. I though Catherine Zeta Jones was a one off but there are plenty like her round there. If top totty is your thing then make a night of it and head for Brannigan's!!!! (Just don't mention you're from London!)
