Although I do think beattie is good signing 2m is a bit steep. Vernazza is unlikely to come unless Gray and Black do some real arm twisting.
A solution to all this could be using some scouts abroad. All you have to do is look at the talent coming out places like sweden (elmander and Asper) or romania (petre) so while beattie is a cause for discussion we should be much more intrested in the Latvian National Goalkeeper and such-alike

I think Beattie would be a great buy, 2M is probably too much but its an offer Southampton won't turn down. I think we need a striker who can actually head the ball aswell as score. Has anyone else heard more about this story?

I hope SJ doesn't pay the 3 million that they want - a buy along the lines of Lee Mills 1.2 million is enough .

It's already been mentioned on these boards too many times to remember, but if we're talking about spending £2 million or more on a striker, why not bring back Shipps? We know he fits in at the Palace, and we should be able to get him for less than £2 million!
Whilst I like the idea of getting Beattie, he's not worth the money Hoddle's demanding.

Completely agree about trying to get Shipps back - but I think Barnsley would want 2.5m for him. Beattie would be worth 2m, but one player you haven't mentioned is Andy Booth of Sheff Wed. He won every header against Blackburn yesterday and it left me wondering how many goals would have been scored if he was playing with Morrison and Forssell as opposed to donkeys like Cresswell and Sibon. Clearly we need someone who can head goals from the steam of quality crosses Black, Gra and Carlisle are delivering - any of Beattie, Shipps and Booth would have us challenging for playoffs THIS year let alone next year.

Beattie has scored 5 goals in 57 games!
That will strike fear into the 1st Divisions defences.
Is he related to the game shop Beatties as I could do with some cheap airfix paint.

we certainly need something extra up front. Any opinions on the big fella who played here for Man City last year. Can't remember his name but I think he once played for Gillingham. I think Cottee could do a job in the short term mind!

I think Man City's big fella (Taylor?) has just joined Wolves but he would have been a good call otherwise.
Where is the evidence that Beattie is worth 2 or even 3 million? It's not there, is it.
Must also agree with bringing shipps back, however he is currently scoring goals a plenty for Barnsley and it is unlikely they would sell him.
Although he will now probably cost a considerable amount of money, I would personally like to see Marcus Bent back here. I always rated him and the three goals he scored at Liverpool, Bolton and against West Ham still rate as three of the best I have seen at Palace. (Southgates against Portsmouth in the 5-1 demolition job still remains the best I have seen)

It seems strange to spend 2/3 million on Beattie with his poor goalscoring record. And Booth hasn't scored any goals for years.
If we're just going to buy someone who can head the ball but doesn't score we might as well buy Adebola or Furlong for £400,000 !!

Booth scored twice ain't he? He also created the goal v Blackburn

I asked my work colleague who is a Southampton fan about Beattie today and he reckons he is slow & overweight.
He thought he was a bit of a one season wonder & would not lose to much sleep seeing him go. He certainly thinks the Saints should take Jordans £2m and run.
I suggested that Shipperley could be identified in a similar way but was a decent player for us. In reply, he rated Shipperley when he was with Southampton more than he currently rates Beattie.
Does anybody work with a Saints fan that also shares this view or thinks otherwise?

Shoot me down and call me Roger but...
Clinton has looked like scoring the most when playing with a big strapping guy, like Bradbury. Although Lee failed to win over the Copp end, and his goals to game ratio was relatively poor, he did excellent donkey work and ball winning for Clint. We all know how Clint took advantage and excelled.
Now, by some strange twist of fate, it appears young Bradders would be losing favour at Pompey, and could be available for around £1.2M.
Forgetting the fact we would lose £2.1M on all the Bradbury deals, its worth thinking about.
Shipperleys fitness is a constant worry even nowadays im afraid.

I agree. I would love to see Bradbury return. He came to Palace at a very, very bad time. Palace fans were for some unknown reason currently in the process of booing fans after 1 or 2 bad games. Confidence was also very low around the club. After he settled in he started to look very useful. I think he would be the perfect foil for Clint.

If it's true that Jordan is aware of what is said on the BBS, or if Alan Smith is "looking in" could I just say that after careful thought, I've decided that even 2 million quid is way too much for Beattie, let alone 3 million.
When Palace buy people and then sell them on a couple of years later without them having done much, they always go cheap.
How on earth can Southampton expect to get 3 million for a guy that cost them 1 million two years ago, and who has hardly featured in their team ever since? It doesn't make any sense.
If they want to price him out of the market, so be it.
Look elsewhere, Messr's Jordan and Smith.
Please.

If we want to spend £2m on striker then how about Negri form rangers, (as i may have nmentioned elsewhere) He svored about 30 goals in half a season for rangers, which even allowing for the fact it was the scottish league is a good record. he's out of favour at rangers and they'd probably let him go at a reasonable price, only problem could be his wages, but surely worth a look

Whilst I don't think it would be a bad signing - I am a bit worried that we're signing a player for that much money who doesn't score goals !
Certainly think that we should go and get Shipps back and get Andy Booth as well for that sort of money.
Brett

The story with Negri is A: He's a prima donna.
B: He prefers the docors couch to the pitch.
C: He is no target man.
D: Hasnt played regularly for over 3 seasons.
And anyway, Mr Campbell will get the hump about it http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

Shipperly ? Freedman was better, Bradbury and Clinton sounds good, we could send that thing known as:
"F(at / oreign)o(ver)r(ated)s(econd rate)e(nglish div 2 quality) l(oan listed) l(oser)[Forsell]
Back to chelsea...
Chapuisat, if he's available, he is known, he has the ability. Injury is the only worry, as he is a proven goal scorer and stuff....
how about a player like Huckerby on loan ?

has anyone thought about the possibility of Paul Kitson at West Ham. He's experienced and has been playing at the top level for a good few years but what with the competeition at West Ham he could be interested in a move and he played on loan at Charlton last season. he could possibly do a job on a short term basis and wouldn't cost the earth!
Brett

Kitson - too injury prone. Has only played in 60 league matches in 6 years due to constant injuries.

I think even 2 million is too much for Beattie, and we certainly should NOT pay 3. I think big TC would be a much better buy for us in the short term, while we concentrate on getting a decent striker.

How about Nathan Blake? He's on the transfer list, and I don't think he'll cost too much - shouldn't be more than £2-3 million anyway. Might expect high wages, though.

I would agree that Beattie is not the answer. Although he holds the ball up okay he is not going to score many goals and he has not got the best of touches. Can't see Barnsley letting Shipps go, or Blackburn letting Blake go as he and Jansen are now 1st choice. However they also have Ostenstad who is up for grabs, or else I wouldn't mind see Bradbury back....at least he worked his proverbials off for the cause!
